Summer Heat Slows Down Work At the close of school the students boarded their buses and headed for a sunny spot to begin work on a great tan. The air conditioning was turned off, leaving the office staff and drivers edu- cation students to improvise a cooling system to make their work days beara- ble. Large fans were placed in the main office and Mr. Gough moved his work out to the main lobby in hopes of catch- ing a breeze. However, the custodial staff just put up with the heat while cleaning the rooms. Drivers Education Keeps Friendly Going For a couple of hundred students, drivers education classes seemed to be the best way to spend the summer. Three hours each day in the unaircon- ditioned school was not easy to sit through no matter how interesting the classes. The instructors gave short breaks which everyone used to get out- side for fresh air or a visit to the Pepsi machine. At the conclusion of classes each day students walked, biked, thumbed or rode home in cars driven by parents or friends, since these eager, beginning drivers have not yet earned their drivers licences. 264 X SUPPLEMENT .. ..,,

K' if ffm 'Wa Long Needed Work Gets Underway Along with the other construction and reconstruction going on at Friendly in 1977, the track and foot- ball field underwent a major resurfac- ing. The field suffered a great deal with the addition of lights and games being played every Friday and Satur- day nights. Next season the field may be used as many as twenty times in- stead of five times as on a regular var- sity schedule. The track has always been substan- dard since it was never sealed prop- erly and drainage has been a constant problem. The cost of these endeavors is very high, but the use of this area is en- joyed by so many that the venture be- comes worthwhile. SUPPLEMENT ! 265
