Secondary Schools Mathematics Cur- riculum lmprovement Study or SSMCIS is an accelerated math program that breaks down the barriers between arithmetics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and cal- culus and treats math as a unified sci- ence. A six-year interlocking math course, SSMICS begins in the seventh grade and continues through the twelfth grade. Students are chosen for the pro- gram on the basis of intelligence, reading and mathematical ability. SSMCIS was created eleven years ago by 25 international math experts under financial grants from the US. govern- ment. Although it began as a small ex- perimental program, it currently involves over 25,000 students in more than 250 schools nationwide. It's that time again when everyone must de- cide his or her academic program forthe coming school year. Should I take Phys- ics? Should I take Algebra IIfTrig? Deci- sions have to be made. Release time maybe, or hovv about the Cooperative Work Study Program that was introduced last spring. Why not make money while going to school? Last spring we weren't given a chance to schedule our classes, but vve did select our subjects. This was due to County budget problems. A new English Class vvas introduced in the curriculum, but not as an elective, and is now required through all High School years. I dreamed my PSAT scores were so low that colleges were sending me brochures showing how dismal and unpleasant their campuses really were, and the College Board begged me not to take anymore of their tests, saying that l'd already wrecked their computer ta Nadia Comenici in re- verse.l For weeks now, I've been having recurring night- mares about the Big Scholarship Scramble. In one, I dreamed the Air Force ROTC advisor suggested that I was better suited to be a Nutrition Coordinator than a Flight Engineer tan N.C. is the guy who packs the K.P. rationsl. He also suggested that I might look into op- portunities offered by the Marines. In another dream, I was sitting by the mailbox, and the mailman made a wide detour around me, watching me out of the corner of his eye. To top it off, last night I woke up from a nightmare in which the Dean of the college was chasing me down marble steps shouting, Get out of my school! I've got a reputation to uphold! But it hasn't really happened, after all, I haven't even taken my college boards yet. Oh Lord, give me strength! ACADEMICS! 163
