For Leonard Pfluger and Karen Welch acting is a major part of their lives. Both are enthusiastically involved in the drama depart- ment at school. Leonard first became interested in drama in ninth grade, when he was in his first play, Once Upon A Mattress. The most excit- ing part of acting for Leonard is when he can sense the audience's reaction while he's on stage. He says drama has helped him in many ways: In learning how to use English, in understanding peo- ple, both fictitious and real, in getting the experience of talking in front of people, in letting out feelings of frustration and anxiety, and in building his vocabulary. He also says he likes to make peo- ple forget their troubles. To Leonard there is nothing more fun than putting on a play and watching people's reactions. For Karen this was her first year in drama when she acted in the Crucible She also performed with the mimist troupe that was involved in the Madrigal concerts at Christmas. She says she en- joys drama because she meets interesting and talented people. She likes to be able to feel the part of the character she's playing, which she says, makes her a more expressive person. She defi- nitely plans on being involved in more plays. Despite the interest of these and many other talented students at Friendly, drama might have to be dropped. Mr. Stringer is running out of time for drama with all the added English classes he must teach. This would certainly be a tragedy, for as Leonard put it: Friendly has one of the best drama departments in the country and it would be a great loss not to have it.
