102 X SENIORS Last january, as a junior, I was fortunate enough to be accepted as an exchange student to Chile in a program sponsored by the American Field Service International Scholarship Program. I lived for a year in the small old, agricultural town of Limache, located near Valparaiso, the largest Pacific port in South America. My host parents. Arturo and Sylvia Godoy had a family of 7 crazy, but loving kids ranging from ages 10-18. I attended a small Catholic school composed of about 280 students from kindergarten to 12th grade. My graduating class had 29 girls. Discipline in school is very strict, and all students in public or private schools in the country are required to wear uniforms. There is no course selec- tion in Chilean schools, all high school students in the whole country take the same courses all year. These courses are French, English, Spanish, literature, history, geography, math, physics, bi- ology, chemistry, philosophy, art, phys. ed and music. Chileans are very friendly and outgoing people, curious about everything going on in the world. A.F.S. provided me with a chance to actually live in another country, not as a tourist, but as an authentic inhabitant of the country. I had an in depth experience in family, community and school life in a foreign country. A.F.S. gave me, an American stu- dent, a chance to meet new people, explore new things, and inter- change ideas and customs with people of another language, who have proven to be not different from ourselves. The three valuable things I gained from my A.F.S. experience are understanding of people, self-confidence, and independence. Lisa Curtis, the A.F.S. exchange student, looks on.
