" In our scramble to prepare ourselves to make a living let us not forget the life that we have to 11ve.A busi- nessman without principles is intol- erable, a scientist without feeling for mankind is dangerous anda.polit1- clan without the means to understand our neighbors is chaos. Science is very important, so is mathematics, but the social sciences, the languages, music and art cannot be left out. The faculty and school board at Friday Harbor High School are aware of this fact and are ever striving to give you the best. Within the pages of this book are recorded and preserved the records of activities of Frida Harbor High School for the year 1955-59. These memories have been captured in print and in picture, and as presented here in this book, they constitute a fit- ting tribute to those students who have been willing to make the neces- sary efforts and sacrifices in order that our student body organization might become stronger and more worth- while. During the past year, stu- dents and teachers have shared many problems, have accepted difficult responsibilities, and have also en- joyed good times together. As your Principal, I wish to express my ap- preciation to all of you who have contributed to the successful comp- letion of the many activities and events that have made this school year a pleasant one. No one has seen them for ten years but I'll find them! Time: 7:00 a. m.: Place: California: Date: June 13, 1969. My assistant, Jack Saturday, and I have a list of names ---- Our job: find them. The first one on the list is Bob Starr. If I remember, Bob was always working around old cars, so I'll try the car line to find him. -------- After a few hours of investigating, we found that Bob was out at the Fifty Mile Los Angeles Race Track, so we headed out to talk to him. Upon our arrival we asked a manager where we could find Bob: he pointed to a red and yellow streak going down the track. Sure enough, it was Bob driving his new race car. The car was going approximate- 1Y 533.333 miles per hour. We told the man what we wanted and he said he'd tell Bob about the reunion. On the way back to the office I bought a newspaper. What do you know! There on the front page of the paper was a picture of Jeanne Reynolds! She had just gotten back from a trip around the world. Time: 12:30 p. m.: Place---Phone Booth: Purpose---Call Jeanne. After telling Jeanne about the reunion I asked her if she knew where any of our classmates were and what they were doing. She told me Johnny Burton had a small ranch at San Fernando Valley. I thanked her and headed for San Fernando Valley in my WT-Birdn. After finding Johnny we found out that he OWNED ALL OF San Fernando Valley and said we could have the class reunion there. I told him about JoAnn Rouleau hiring me to find her classmates and inviting them to the class reunion on her planet. JoAnn was Queen of Mars and had the biggest Air Coast Guard Force in the Whole Universe. Time: 10:00 p. m.: Place--some hotel: Interest at hand --sleep. Before going up to my room I heard a loud laugh and turned around to find Bucky Woods and five young ladies standing in the lobby of the hotel. I walked over and asked him if he remembered me and after lighting his 310 cigar with a 8100 bill he said, 'Ya, and what may I do for you?' I told him about the reunion and after a few good-byes to the young ladies, I left and went to my room. All I learned from Bucky was that his rich Aunt had left him a few MILLION DOLLARS. 'unnmswuu Time: 7:30 a. m.: Place--on the way to breakfast. I decided to go to a very expensive place to eat and I am glad I did. While I was sitting at a table waiting for a SSO breakfast, I saw a woman all 'decked out' in furs, dia- monds, and a very expensive looking hat. The hat was very big and after finding the face, which was half hidden under it, I found myself looking at Joyce Crosby. She recognized me immediately and came over and sat down. After she had heard about the class reunion and had ordered a S150 break- fast, she told me she had just been down visiting Johnny at his ranch to rest up after making a big picture. fShe had the leading roll in 'The Life Story of Joyce Crosby' which will be playing next week right here in Ca1iforniaJ When I had finished my coffee and toast and had said good-bye to Joyce, I went back to the hotel. Saturday came running out of the building and told me that we d1dn't have enough money to pay for the hotel. I jumped in my 'T-Birdn and headed for the nearest bank. There in the largest let- ters you have ever seen was written nPresident, Kenny Doughertyn. Of course, I went right in and cashed a check. I talked to Kenny for awhile. He said he'd be at the re- union and if I needed any money to let him know. He also told me that Ron Crawford was President of the Washington State Ferries, and that Dale Rishel owned Standard Oil Com- PBDJ. They both lived on the Island. From the bank I went to the telegraph office to send them a telegram. At the telegraph office I encountered Dale DeVr1es. He was all dressed up and so I asked him if he was going to a wedding or something. To my surprise he said, Yes'. He explained that he was writing a book on marriage and this was the tenth time he had married. I wished him luck and after looking at my watch remembered I had to pick up Sat- urday and find the last name on the list. I was already ten minutes late so I hopped in my WT-Birdn and took off for the hotel. I heard a loud noise about two blocks from the hotel and when I looked up I saw a police air plane giving me the signal to pull over and stop. I pulled to a stop and a man put a rope ladder out of the side of the plane and came down. I sat in my car with my head down while the policeman told me how 'awful' it was to go 100 miles an hour in a 95 mile speed zone. He said he'd have to give me a ticket. I looked up to take it and almost fainted. There standing in a police uniform, ticket in hand, was the last man on my list, Denny Martel. I informed Denny about the reunion. 'V QE' - if ' Sify 1 .4 17' 0,56 ,,Lli5fory As we look back into the past to that eventful day in September of 19146, we see 313. familiar faces entering the First Grade room. They were, John Burton, Duane Charbonneau, Ron Crawford, Dale DeVries, Bill Dougherty, Kenny Dougherty, Rodney Dunn, Kenny Gasho, Garlic King, Denny Martel, like Nelson, Dale Rishel, Robert Starr, Leland Tipton, Jack Richardson, Quentin Barnes, Eleanor Boyce, Patricia Chandley. Joyce Crosby, Noreen Droullard, Janice Gallenger, Linda Gross, Carol Ann Judge, Robin Maynard, Norma Miles, Carley Morrill, Jeanne Reynolds, JoAnn Rouleau, Nancy Sallie, Julia Smith, Iaeve Stevens, Joyce Tuck, Patricia Miller and Vicki Haws. The first unlucky teacher that got the job of ' tackling W us was Mrs. Landahl. During this year we were introduced to Scotch Tape on the mouth and wearing I'am a baby' signs while standing in the hall. Because of 'nibbling' paste, Kenny Gasho had to sit in front of the class and 'attempt' to eat a whole jar of it. Our next year of school was highlighted by the carnival put on by the primary grades. Hrs. Schmitt, our teacher, put in a great deal of time trying to make performers out of us. It is still debatable whether or not she succeeded. During the year we added six new faces and lost nine. In the Third Grade, Roberta DeBruler and Vernon Wood joined us. Ne kept Mrs. Sundstrom on her toes intercepting the 'love notes' which were passed. In our spare time we began learning how to read and write. By the end of the year we had succeeded in driving out' five of our classmates. In the Fourth Grade Mrs. Cary was our teacher. We welcomed four new students and lost Bob Starr and Vernon Wood. It was during this year that we organized a rhythm band which made up a big part of our year in the music department. This next year we encountered our first male teacher, lr. Gould. After lunch every day we looked forward to the stories he read usg the most memorable were those of the 'Hardy Boys'. It seemed as though Vernon Iood still hadn't made up his mind on where to go to school so he returned to us again this year. In the Sixth Grade Nr. Moore was our teacher. During the course of the IBB? we began many new activities. He introduced us to sguare dancing which resulted in a few romances-such as the ones between Ron Crawford and Joyce Tuck, Dale Rishel and Jeanne Reynolds. There was also an aquariam in the room which kept us busy keeping it stirred up. This was the year we were patrolman which led to two rewarding experiencesg that of Petrol Camp and Playland. Vernon Wood left us again this year. In our Seventh year Jim Baker joined the class. Mrs. Yarling became quite famous with her 'glue bottle'. She was always pound- ing it on her desk to get our attention. Sponsored By: Brown Lumber and Friday HarborCann1ng Company Having finally reached the Eighth Grade we thought we were on the top of the L dder. This year we had two teachers, Mr. Hylton and Mr. Gardner. During this year we put on the skit called nThe Naughty Lady of Shady Lane", which was presented at different functions throughout the year. At last we reached high school. The Seniors soon 'broke us in with initiation which will long be remembered. We were a little shy at first but soon learned the ropesn. This year the following joined our classg Lester Dayton, Garlie King, Carol Ann Judge, Edith Rich and Joan Hass, but were sorry to lose Joyce Tuck, Janice Gardner, and Peggy Buchanan. During our Sophomore year of high school we started our traditional carnival which has been contiuned thoughout the year. After a year we were in the swing of things, but were still considered "under-class-men". This year we added three new students and lost three. In our Junior year we were finally considered Nuppep-class-mann, Our big event this year was the Junior-Senior Prom which will always remain a pleasant memory. At last our long awaited climb to be Seniors had arrlved. Vernon Wood finally decided to come back for his Senior year to graduate with us. Out of the 12 Seniors, ll of us started the first grade together. This year we initiated both the freshmen and the eighth grade. We also gave our last Carnival. These will always be remembered as a big part of our high school years. Throughout the year many changes in school activities took place. Our stay in Friday Harbor High School is now coming to an end. All we will have are many memories of our school days. n ll.-..-gg 3-'i u1xx:n4-s's4ru:nrx:mLu11-.z-.. . fsmwg .msn :znz L.
