After teaching at the high school, he moved to Jamestown Community College, where he coached the baseball team. When he quit coaching the J.C.C. team, baseball ended. Four years ago, Tom Sharp came to Frewsburg Central School. Instilling “pride,” his favorite word, in the football team, he coached them to their best record of 5-2-1. He also started the high school wrestling program. His interests are young people, coaching, and sports; he participates in many city leagues. “You can do anything if you have enough pride in yourself, and in the man playing next to you.” The Class of ’77 is proud that the man next to us is Mr. TOM SHARP, and we dedicate this SENIOR LEAVES to him. Carl6 After about 30 years of dedicated service, one of Frewsburg’s most famous teachers, Mrs. Carol J. Carte, is retiring, as of June, 1977. Mrs. Carte began her teaching career at Frewsburg in September of 1933, teaching all the math and Latin courses. Through the years, she has enlightened students in the subjects of Latin I-IV, Business Arithmetic, Math 9- 11, and English 9-10. But let’s begin at the beginning. Mrs. Carte graduated from Jamestown High School in 1929 as salutatorian. From there, she went on to NYSUT at Albany, the only teacher’s college at the time. When asked how she decided to become a teacher, she replied that her father pointed her in that direction because, “I always helped the teacher who had several grades at one time. When the teacher was busy with one group of kids, I would help another do math or read.” She graduated from the college in June of 1933 as valedictorian with a Bachelor of Science degree. Her major was, ironically, biology. She immediately began teaching in September of that same year. After teaching for 30 years, one would naturally have many memories, and this holds true with Mrs. Carte. However, she doesn’t have a memory that stands above the others. “They are all very special to me.” She said that she has very vivid memories of her first 8 years, and of her more recent years. She continued to say, “Students are basically the same now as they were 30 years ago. Naturally, kids change with the times, and each year has its advantages and dis¬ advantages, and the changes are reflected in the students.” She believes she has also changed with the times in terms of discipline. In her retirement, she plans to clean her attics, organize her slides, and to keep very busy. Depending on her health, she intends to travel, which, in her mind, she believes has helped make more of herself. (She has already been to Europe,Morroco, Egypt, Thailand, Hong Kong, Gibralter, and Japan.) Most of all, she wants to be free. I think most people would agree that Carol Carte has ted a fulfilling life. She doesn’t regret anything she has done, and she believes that, if the chance were given to her, she would live her life over in the same manner she has already lived it. Frewsburg Central School will feel the loss of Mrs. Carte: the teacher, and the person. She is a person who did things for the benefit of others, which is a sign of an outstanding person. “I love kids!” I am sure that the feeling is mutual in the minds and hearts of many students, both past and present. We will miss her very much. Office Staff ROW 1: Paulette Severtson, Carrie Clark, Lois Mc¬ Cullough, Audrey Gatgen. Under the guidance of Mrs. Schmidt, the year officially began with a Christmas Concert on December 20, 1976. Of course rehearsals for this production began as early as • September. Immediately after Christmas vacation, 12 weeks of 2 to 3 hour evening and Saturday afternoon rehearsals for the musical, OKLAHOMA!, began. This theatrical production was staged in late April. In effort to raise money for the annual trip in May, members of the Senior High Chorus and Girl’s Ensemble held several candy, candle, cheese, and tag-day sales. The goal was to raise $95 for each person, in order to tour the city of Washington, D.C. A final Spring concert is planned for Mid-June. 65 Eighth Grade Chorus ROW 1: Valerie Weber, Christine Swanson, Darlene Jimer- son, Julie Gustafson, Barb Johnson, Christine Giambelluca, Lisa Fairbanks, Melanie Phillips, Robin Thorpe, Bonnie Griffen, Dan Thierfeldt. First of all we would like to give thanks to our faithful ad¬ visor Mrs. Edwards. We would also like to thank Renee Gatgen, our treasurer. We wish to thank our excellent artist, Cheryl Lefebvre, who spent many hours, pen and ink in hand, designing our cover and division pages. We extend our special thanks to Darlene Peterson who designed our headline pages. We also thank Dan Johnson, Lance Pangborn, Marc Edwards, and Pat Songster for supplying many photographs for our use. Above all, we extend our sincere thanks to the many “unsung” people who helped and cooperated with us throughout the year. These people are, of course, the members of the SENIOR LEAVES staff. To them we give our heartiest thanks and best wishes. Thanks again. 135 i • ; « . S» ;i a - - 1 EM ■ ' A ' ‘ JS i v- ?■ i , m i ' tt V. 1 • mKSsaM 1 _■ ml ft . N v " : S. £ 4 A, m Li A ' ‘ V y p c?
