So that you may enjoy the book, several students have spent many hours behind a typewriter, typing copy sheets, tracking down elusive subjects for pictures, and drawing different layouts. We cannot avoid being partial to some who have spent numberless hours doing our bidding, but to all who have had any part whatsoever to do with the 1958 El Portal, we extend our sincere appreciation. KENNETH SMITH: Being the principal of any school is an exact- ing and anxious job, and Mr. Smith always takes it seriously. But even more important to us, the students, are his gifts as an alert and knowl- edgeable administrator and his qualities as a wise counselor and sincere friend. Energetic and hardworking, perhaps none of us will ever know how much of his time, thought, effort and very life forces he has spent to make our school one we can be proud of. A conscientious Christian--perhaps none of us will ever know how much has been his prayer and heartache to make us the kind of people the school can be proud of. 'i A!! ftxff GLENN WILLHELM: Fluffy billows of adding machine tape, a swinging gate separating the front and back offices, account books and cash boxes partially define the limits of his working day. Business office callers this year were often surprised to see little Carole Marie sleep- ing in her car bed while her doting dad tiptoed around the darkened office. GLENN WILLHELM Acc ountant Shop Rough lengths of wood evolve into lustrous bookcases, in the hands of the freshmen, under his skillful direction. JEAN WEISS: Her first year at F.U.A. has been one filled with more than her share of extracurricular. She has been a constant encouragement to the stu- dents who find difficulty in personification, writing newspaper articles, or being on time. JEAN WEISS B .A . Journalism English Attendance Occasionally she gains relaxation by painting with water colors. Q l lx, ,ii QP 0 KATHRYN ANDREWS: Whirring Singers and click- ing Royals partially encompass the world of sound which constitutes each school day. In the realm of G.P.A.'s and transcripts, precise workmanship marks her handling of grades, green files containing vital statistics and class letters. Adherence to principle characterizes her spiritual life. KATH RYN ANDREWS Registrar Typing Home Economics Whether crocheting an afghan, taking Kodachromes on her Zeiss Ikon, or setting out pansies in January she finds relaxation from demanding school duties. 'I' X 6 . ll 'J 2' if L , . .tm Pathfinder activities, caring for little Carol and sponsorship of the Freshman class take up most of her spare time. MARJORIE WILLHELM Librarian MARJORIE WILLHELM: A cosmopolitan reading background, a sincere interest in young people, and an efficient handling of the library have made her a welcome addition to F.U.A. this year. Students enjoy her warm understanding and helpfulness. ki -1 ,, 6 V. Her perceptive qualities and warm un- derstanding draw many students to request her counsel. Her outside interests include membership in a clarinet choir composed of performing musicians and music teachers. She displays an artisan's skill in leathercraft, her recently acquired hobby. is THOMAS H. SHELDON B.A. String Ensemble Choir Piano Voice Elementary Music , as wiwasf- 'N -Mwm THOMAS SHELDON: Leading his twenty -four voice choir he evokes a musical spectrum of multi-colored tones. In piano and voice les- sons he encourages precision in musical expression. s gt, n,s gf Taking Kodachromes affords relaxa tiong here he snaps Barbara and Ronnie. JAMES A. MCCLENAGHAN: An academic world of beakers, pungent smells and mathematical abstractions is his. Combining patience and clarity of explanation he faithfully guides the wondering freshmen through four years of science into the mystery of the rise of sap in the xylem, the complexities of the loci, and the effort of learning valence. JAMES A . MCCLENAGHAN B .A . Science Mathematics Olive groves, peach trees, and a California design redwood addition to his house consume his spare time. '8 Driver Educ ation ROBERT JOHNSTON B.A., M.A. Bible spanish 1,11 ROBERT JOHNSTON: Conscientious, friendly, encouraging, and will- ing to aid anyone, he has a heart as big as he is tall. Whether in classes, our of school, or sponsoring the Temperance Club, Friendship Team, or the Junior class, his mature Christian phlisophy permeates his life. Enjoying an evening at home with the family, beside his hi- fi supplies relaxation from the tensions of teaching. Proficient and scholarly in Spanish and Bible, he discourages stereo-typed thinking. A further test of his linguistic ability will be furnished next year when the Johnstons serve as mis- sionaries in Korea. ,:x !74'. 2 Aw lv., it N Ad'-ig' M- , tr... l WILBUR HOLBROOK: Whether teaching a rookie how to bat, skiing down No. 1, standing behind the teaching desk, or babysitting for granddaughter,CindyQhe displays amazing proficiency.
