Wootan ' 016 Kenny Hickman's 21 yard field goal and Ted Wootan's three yard plunge made Don KnauFf's debut as Freeport high frosh-soph football coach a tremend- ous success as the Pretzelettes defeated the Dubuque Lambs, 9-0 in the opening game of the season. Beloit's sophomore football team defeated the Freeport Pretzelettes 'l8-'I3 at Beloit in the last minute of play when a Beloit player ran a Freeport kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Pretzelette touchdowns were scored by Malcolm Pear- son and Ted Wootan. Hickman was successful on one extra point attempt. In a dazzling display of offensive football, Freeport's frosh-soph opened the Big Eight campaign by outscoring West Aurora 20-7, after trailing 7-0 at the quarter. Malcolm Pearson tackled a West Aurora player in the end zone as Freeport broke into the scoring column with two points. Seconds later Wayne Heitz sprinted 44 yards for a touchdown. Then early in the third period, Heitz made a magnificent return of an Aurora punt as he went 74 yards for a touchdown. Failure to convert on extra point attempts caused Freeport to lose to LaSalle-Peru 'I4-12. Both Freeport touchdowns came on passes by Ken Hickman. The first was a six yard touch- down pass to Charlie Williams and the second was a 53 yard touchdown pass play with Heitz on the receiving end. West Rockford's sophomores exploded for three touchdowns in the last four minutes to turn a scoreless tie into a 20-0 victory over the Pretzelettes. With time running out, Free- port was forced to take chances by passing with the passes developing into West Rock- ford touchdowns. Scoring both touchdowns in the first half and converting on one of two extra point attempts, Freeport's frosh-sophs defeated East Aurora l3-'l2. Fullback Ted Wootan bulled his way over the goal from one yard out for the first score, and Malcolm Pearson recover- ed an East Aurora fumble in the air and ran 13 yards to the end zone for the second T.D.
