But each actor---from the awkward under-study to the star of the showf-plays an im- portant role and adds his colorful bit to the pano- rama of life at F. H. S. The buildings and campus serve as the setting for our mighty drama. The faculty act as stage hands, shifting the scenery, the background of mental atti- tude, against which our skits are enacted. No orthodox actors are we. We play our parts wherever we are: on, off, or back stage. Then in a grand finale, we climax our final efforts with gradu- ation, and with a roar of applause demand a curtain call from the director who has seen thirty-six consec- utive seasons of the Drama of Freeport High School. Slowly the vibrant peal of an organ and the clear ring of young voices rise, filling the air with joyous Yulef tide song. Growing louder, the strains ol melody burst forth and seem almost to echo among the stars. The faces about me grow radiant, reflecting the expressions of the singers and instrumentalists. Although some eyes are filled with tears at the memories brought back by these carols, as the familiar notes of the Hallelujah Chorus bring the music to a close, all hearts are filled with the gladness for which the Christmas season stands. It would he wholly unfair for us to attempt to write up the 1939 foothall season in terms of material gains. Beset by many difficulties at the start, struggling under great odds, they did end up in the eonf ferenee cellar. But to those of us who understand our fellows, there comes a vision of the real significance of their hattles. We see a group of hoys, trying hard to win each game-'giving the team the hest of their effortsg we see numerous injuries absorlving their hest playersg we see the sorrow that comes to those who want to win and try to win hut to whom defeat seems inevitable. With one mighty Hereulean effort our heavyweights defeated a superior team and redeemed themselves in our eyes. We feel that, even defeated as they were, the team of '39 was a success, for the memhers did their hest, and this is all that we or anyone could ask.
