WARRIORS FOOTBALL OF YORE
Art Mosher fSponsorJ
The follow rng story about to be unfolded rs undoubtedly new stuff to most Frederrck students today
but perhaps some of the older alums who were here rn the days rmmedrately precedrng the 2nd World
War wrll remember wrth nostalgra thrs tale that wrll forever remarn ched rn Frederrck football
The football outlook for the Warrrors back rn 1939 was not brrght All of the lettermen had
graduated and there were not more than 14 freshmen werhrng over 120 pounds Coach Rockne Tesone
had to do somethrng and do rt fast to snap Frederrck s 73 game losrng streak The problem possessed
hrm He hardly knew where to turn
One Sunday afternoon he was walkrng through some farmrng country as was hrs custom rn those
days Wrestlrng wrth hrs problem of how to freld a football team he hardly notrced the passage of
trme and as dusk began to descend he realrzed he had lost hrs way
He whrpped out hrs Boy Scout Manual to frnd whrch srde of the tree moss grows on but before he
could frnd the proper page he was aware of a huge shadow besrde hrm He looked up and there stood
a great hulk of a man
Coach Rockne gasped The brologrcal currosrty was at least 6 feet 7 rnches tall and werghed 350
pounds rf he werghed an ounce He wore a T shrrt and hrs muscles bulged lrke watermelons
Duh h h krn I help you out mrstuh? rnqurred the fellow
The Frederrck mentor never one to be slow on the draw whrpped out a form contract and sard
How would you lrke to go to Frederrck sonny? Sonny wrggled one of hrs 6 rnch toes blrnked an
eye and expressed hrmself beautrfully wrth a resonant Ruh h h
Before the monster knew what had happened the redoubtable Warrror coach had made hrm put hrs
thumb on an rnk pad Then the tremendous thumb was rmprrnted on the contract under some mrcro
Coach Rockne Tesone was posrtrve he had the answer to hrs football problems now The large a
Lummox Gary was hrs name rt developed was duly regrstered at Frederrck
The frrst day Lummox came out to practrce he was clad only rn some crude burlap sacks A
order was sent to Chrcago to have a specral football unrform made up
It was more drffrcult than Rockne had supposed to teach the ape the fundamentals of football He
had no conceptron of whrch drrectron to run The scrappy and game Warrror frrst lrne whrch averaged
126 112 couldn t stop the huge Gary
Coach Rockne worked long and hard on the grant After erght long hard weeks of practrce the
Warrrors were ready for therr frrst game wrth Loursvrlle Prrates They were confrdent because the
arduous weeks had pard off Gary was set
Remember Lummox the coach sard affectronately rn the pre game pep talk 200 Frederrck
students wrll be up rn those stands cheerrng for you The Prrates wrll never be able to stop you so
get out there for the glory of old Frederrck
Lummox s mouth dropped erght rnches rn a sort of grrn and Rockne knew that he understood
As the team ran out on the freld the tremendous student body of 1939 200 strong rarsed therr
vorces rn a thunderous cheer
Rah Rah Rah Lummox Lummox
Grve them hell You re our man
The Prrates won the toss anu erected to recerve Lrttle Sam krcked off for the Warrrors and rt
wasn t a bad krck for Sam It just about reached the mrd freld strrpe Crusher DeBorskr Prrates full
back Just got hrs hands on the ball and never knew what hrt hrm Wrth an awful rmpact Lummox
Gary the tremendous ace rn the hole for the Warrrors pounced on hrm
The game was delayed momentarrly as the remarns of the Prrate fullback were carrred off rn a
beer mug The fans were on therr feet for rn the same motron Gary had fallen on the lost ball
The ball too was completely deflated by the force of the tackle so a new one was brought rnto

lt ts not necessary to go 1I1lO details of the game The Ptrates were slightly demoraltzed as they
saw Z? of thetr players scraped off the fteld in ten minutes They had to forfeit
There was Joy tn old I-redertek that ntglt Kickapoo Joy juice flowed like water Sam Dt
Paolosky then a young man in ht early ftfttes gave away free beers
The Joy was but short ltved For come Monday afternoon and football practice there was no
Gary Coach Rockne had the town combed But after a week of fruitless search there was sttll no Gary
For three more weeks there was still no Gary Somehow the team managed to wtn anyway B
fore every game the coach would face the squad with tears tn hts eyes and say Lets win this one
But the big Ilomecomtng game with the Lafayette Bobcats was coming up and the Warriors had
no chance without Gary C oach Rockne had beeome a ehanged man stttce the mysterious dtsappearanee
of Lummox Cary Ile hardly ate hts face beeame ltned and hts hatr was rapidly turning Murphy
The day be fore the Ilomee omtng game the eoaeh went out to play some golf fin I ongmonty hop
tng tt wottld relax htm Ile wasn t having one of hts better days He had a treat 31 for4 holes 3
the ftfth hole he shot a tremendous drive that hooked at the last minute and went off tnto the rough
'Its Seotcn blcod botltng at the thought of losing a ball Tesone went wading tnto the rough tn
pttrsutt of the pellet
Ile stopped de ad tn hts tracks There eurled up under a tree was Lummox all of htm And
rtght beside htm was a coed beauty a skirt Lummox was running hts ktng stze fingers through her
hatr and he had a stupid grttt on hts face
Tesone s face turned an tndescrtbable color somewhere between purple and green Lummox
he screamed lummox slowly raised an eyebrow saw the coach and blushed actually blushed
btg enough to htt Lummox over the head with
I ve been right here eoaeh replied Gary duttfully I m I m Qand even the wtnd stopped
blowtng before thts epic pronouncementj I m 111 love
lf Tesone thought he was dumbfounded when he heard these words he mllsl have been really stun
ned when the ape eonttnued hts soltloquy And and I m a quttttng football eoaeh my gu
here wont leave me play
Rockne stood there for a moment Forgotten was hts lost golf ball suddenly something snapped
tn hts bratn A horrtble scream fTesone sj split the Colorado atr
You you you WOLF he shrieked and ranchers as far aw ay as Estes Park loaded thetr guns
as hts cry went echotng thru the htlls
What happened just then tn the rough bestde the ftfth hole at the Longmont golf course ts not clear
tn htstortcal records But here ts the common legend for what tt ts worth
Lummox Gary always one to take hts coach s words literally stood stock still for an tnstant
Then a horrtble look came tnto hts eyes He stamped a foot and the earth shook under the tmpact
Wtth a look of a man possessed by the devtl he satd tn a low voice O K tf you say so coach
There were tears tn the monster s eyes But hts course was clear tn hts mind Ile drew up a
trememdous breath of atr IUIO hts lungs a bolt of lightning struck the spot where they were standtng
and nothing remained except a huge bronze statue of a wolf
Maintenance men found tt the next morning Police records sttll ltst the mysterious disappearance
of Coach Tesone Lummox Cary and one Gladys Aebly
But all those who know of thts story know what happened Somemourntng htgh schoolmen cartedthe
statue from the golf course and erected tt tn front of the football fteld And there to thts day stands
Lummox Cary the greatest football player tn the htstory of Frederick High perpetuated tn bronze at
the word uf hts coach
You n ay not believe thts story but any stormy ntght tf you wtsh to go to the football fteld and
watch you wtll notice that every ttme a bolt of lightning lights the sky the bronze Warrior wtll curl
hts ltps tn a wtstful smile
Football players may come and football coaches may go but the legend of Lummox Gary and
coach Tesone the coach who meant what he satd wtll ltve on forever

" f The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that dayg
iraq - r -
' ' 1 T The score stood four to two with but one inning more to play'
And so when Cooney died at first and Burrows did the same
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game
A stragglmg few got up to go in deep despair The rest
Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast
They thought if only Casey could but get a whack at that
They d put up even money now with Casey at the bat
But Flynn preceded Casey as did also jimmy Blake
And the former was a pudding and the latter was a fake
1 So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat
For there seemed but little chance of Caseys getting to the bat
But Flynn let drive a single to the wonderment of all
And Blake the much despised tore the cover off the ball
And when the dust had lifted and they saw what had occurred
There was Jimmy safe on second and Flynn a hugging third
Then from the gladdened multitude went up a joyous yell
lt bounded from the mountain top and rattled in the dell
It struck upon the hillside and recoiled upon the flat
For Casey mighty Casey was advancing to the bat
There was ease in Casey s manner as he stepped into his place
There was pride in Caseys bearing and a smile on Caseys face
And when responding to the cheers he lightly dofled his hat
No stranger in the crowd could doubt twas Casey at the bat
Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt
Then while the writhxng pitcher ground the ball into his hip
Defiance gleamed in Casey s eye a sneer curled Casey s lip A

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur thereg 80
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped.
"That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said.
From the benches, black with people, there went up a muflled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shoreg
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted someone on the stand. 35
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand. Q
With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shoneg
He stilled the rising tumult he bade the game go on
He signaled to the pitcher and once more the spheroxd flew
But Casey still ignored it and the umpire said Strike two
Fraud' cried the maddened thousands and the echo answered Frau
But a scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed
They saw his face grow stern and cold they saw his muscles strain
And they knew that Casey wouldn t let that ball go by again
The sneer is gone from Casey s lips his teeth are clenched in h te
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate
And now the pitcher holds the ball and now he lets it go
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey s blow
Oh somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright
The band is playing somewhere and somewhere hearts are light
And somewhere men are laughing and somewhere children shout
But there is no joy in Mudville-mighty Casey has struck out
