AN OPEN LETTER T0 THE PRINCIPAL Dear Vrs Parrott As our stay at Douglass dravss to a close we reahze how important our secondary educatlon has been Wxth tlllg educatlon as a foundatlon for our future teach us of character sportsmanshlp scholarshlp and srmple humanltv As we close this chapter of educatlon we hope that future Douglass students may have equal opportumty to approach maturlty under your frultful admmlstratlon Smcerely The Februarv Craduatang Class of 57 RETROSPECTION M aybelle Naomz Rodgers Wow we come to the close of three years at Frederlck Douglass Semor Hlgh School W1th m1XCd emotlons we the February graduatmg class of 1957 attempt to evalu ate our struggle to attam the ldeals of courage patnence and usefulness In retrospect we l1ve through our early days when as freshmen we were perplexed yet hopeful Now that we have become more aware of what our school means to us and have gamed 1nsp1rat1on from each other and from our teachers we reahze that the ldeals sought have been attamed durmg the years Our endeavors have not been 1n va1n and we are proud of our accompl1shments Although th1s class as one of the smallest to be gradu ated from tI'I1S msututaon xt has recelved warm pralse for part1c1pat1on ln sports 1n dramatlcs ln school and PRODUCING m CIVIC act1v1t1es Members of thls class have engaged 1n everv extra currlcular 3CllV1ty whlch has been spon sored Each segment of thus class has made 1ts own umque contrlbutlon to the class hlstory Many hlstory makmg changes have occurred durmg our stay at Douglass Two of the more 1mportant changes are the retirement of our dlgmfied and hlghly esteemed PI'lI'IClPal Mr Ralph W Reckhng and the appolntment of hls versatlle and capable successor Mrs Lllllan M Parrott To the freshmen of February 1957 the graduatxng class dedlcates 1ts record of achlevement We tmst that the record whlch thls class has made wlll serve as a helpful gulde to you and others who follow us A PAGEANT Wnlluzm Downmg Allen In the role of an amateur dlrector of pageants I have secular dramas m the commumty for the past four and a half years Produc1ng pageants 1n the community has enriched my appreclatxon for my school wluch provlded trauung that has enabled me to develop deslrable bus1 ness attatudes and make soclal contacts It has been my great pleasure to wrlte stage and appear an some of the pageants whlch my 8S9OC1at6S and I have presented 1n churches and community centers ln the Clty Thls has only been posslble through the tireless efforts of the teachers m Douglass many of whom presented matenals relaung to the art of producmg a successful play At the helm of productxon there are many phases of preparation and organlzatlon that must be carefullv assembled ln order that each productlon w1ll be well presented When one has been 1nsp1red to xx ork IH the production of a play lndependently he must first con srder a sponsor or sponsonng orgamzataon and of course he must have a scnpt The selechon of the scnpt should be on the lex el of the cast IH order that they may gxve thelr best 1n charac ter17at1on It IS lmperatlve that the dlrector select and produce only plays xuth vslnch he has the fullest com prehenslon and for xxhlch he has enthuslasm The procedure for d6Slgn1Dg the floor plan IS one of the early steps 1n preparlng a successful play The floor plan can be cons1dered as the dlrector s gurde In castmg a successful plav the dlrector must search for actors that have personal1ty physxcal attnbutes and respons1 blhty then set out to develop them 1nto the characters A penod of blockmg sess1ons between the dlrector and the cast are held m order that the dxrector can convey h1s mterpretatron of the scnpt and how each scene must be played In workmg w1th the cast lt has been found that the most dllficult scene to drrect IS one that requlres a crowd or mob Careful attentlon must be pald to scenes of this type by requestmg spontanelty and naturalness out of the cast One must greatly admlre the fnendllness and co operatlon of our cast whlch has enabled us to put over such scenes VVhen rehearsmg a pageant the 1mportant segments of the play must be carefully planned In Blbhcal pro ductlons the staff must 1ns1st upon prompt rehearsals because t1me 15 the basic element ln prolectlng the meanmg of the play to the cast When scheduled rehearsals are not kept on txme the productlon IS thrown back and the play loses its appeal to the cast Staffing our productlons usuallv consxsts of the musl cal dlrector scenery deslgner assoclate dlrector tech nlcal advlsor research consultant staff supervlsor and staff typlsts Each member of the staff has a specrfic obllgatlon to the productlon to see that eve mg works out perfectly for the final performance It IS through the efforts of these 1nd1v1duals that the drrector IS able to put over h1s program Our productlon staff must work hard all the vear round especlallv wlth pro ductaon plans and settmg up a budget for the
