ACCELEBRITIES OF SEPTEMBER l942 By u.ous BRANCH On June 22 l942 the l2A accelerates be gan theur last year toward the end of theur goal These ambutuous youngsters were work ung arduously to complete the specufued three year hugh school course un two and a half years Inasmuch as we were the furst class un Douglass to achueve thus sugnal honor you wull understand why we call ourselves the accelebrutues As usual the furst day presented utself wuth a great deal of confusuon Probably one of the buggest surpruses that we ever had was havung some students from our suster school lDunbarl represented un our class However we became acquaunted and welcomed them warmly Although we had to study both extensuvely and untensuvely there was always some uovucul teacher who allevuated the gravuty of the oc casuon wuth a dash of encouragement and assurance l recall partucularly our chemustry teacher Muss Smuth who used to always say lf you want to pass un my room you have to burn some mudnught oul She wasnt kuddung euther for we not only burned the mudnught oul but also used our share of sunlught tryung to balance those uncooperatuve equatuons I our Englush and French studues we were car rued as uf by maguc on adventurous trups wuth Henry Esmond Daudet and Guy De Maupas sant Needless to say we were exposed to many unterestung experuences but we were afraud of our beung umpervuous to that expo sure Alas when a seemung darkness turned unto lught we found that we had made ut Eleanor Redduck Beatruce Lewus and the other merry classmates lost no tume un seuzung thus opportunuty to relax Those members of the untellugentsua Mary Morrow Dorothy Cooper Oneuda Beane Frances Ralph Alma Randall Lulluan Carter and Phyllus Allen began to realuze that much study was a wearuness of casuon called for some sort of celebratuon Plans were made and a most successful socual affaur was held Thus affaur as lovely as ut was sugnaluzed that the Class of September of I942 was about to sung uts swan song We realuzed that all would soon engage un varuous actuvutues and perhaps not see each other for a long tume Thus realuzatuon naturally brought sorrow to us Whether our paths shall cross or not there re mauns one consolatuon we can never forget the accelebrutues of September l942 WE DOODIT osBoRNE CARROLL Wuth the begunnung of the second semester of nuneteen hundred and forty two the uunu r and senuors were approach d by the school counselor Mr Johnson apropos the new op portunuty ordered by the Commussuoner of Edu catuon The programs proposed by Mr Stude baker would enable hugh school and college uunuors to complete the requured traunung a semester ahead of tume The Unuversuty of Chucago blazed the traul and soon hugh schools and colleges all over the land followed suut Many ambutuous students at Douglass avaul ed themselves of thus opportunuty and began to seek the unformatuon concernung the requur ed courses lt was necessary that the stu dents pursue an untensuve program of studues for ten weeks Each course was to last suxty munutes The unevutable questuon was could we take ut? Well wuth hopes hugh and steps steady and furm the task was undertaken The furst week proved very tryung to some So many aduustments had to be made As tume went on we adapted ourselves to the proce dures both of wunter and of summer school For seven months we studued both day and nught and when we were unformed that all was quuet on the Western Front we returned to a state of normalcy We lost no tume un tellung our fruends and relatuves We doodut We wull never forget the occasuon and though many of us wull be separated we wull recall the moments spent as one nappy famuly I - f A . . - - .
