Those games and that big win are over. That record-breaking blizzard has melted. The times when we were perhaps a little crazier than normal. That happy mood, that special cast party, and our moments of ham- ming-it-up. The scoreboard is dead, the cheers are silent. Our history project is over. The summer of 77 will be remembered much differently by the mem- bers of the class of 1978. In June, tragedy struck, and the life of our friend and classmate Ronnie Ball was taken from us. It is not for us to know the purpose or understand why this had to happen, but only to try and do our best to accept it. Ronnie will always be loved and never forgotten by his friends and now to him and to his family, we, Ronnie's friends in the class of 78, dedicate our section of the 1978 Eaglite; Our hearts still ache with sadness And silent tears still flow, What it means to lose you, No one will ever know. When I'm sad and lonely, And everything seems wrong. I seem to hear you whisper, Cheer up and carry on. Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, Don't cry, I'm only sleeping, We'll meet again, someday. Seniors 23 “SENIORS PROPHECY, IN TWENTY...... Once upon a time in the year of 1998 we see the town of Frankton has become a booming metropolis. This change is accredited, so the legend goes, to the brains and inge- nuity of the members of the Class of 1978. In the heart of Frankton lie many prosperous businesses. To the east we see Cheryl Ball's Cosmetic Factory, with Tony Alexander, Linda Bagley, Janet Johnson, Linda Browning, Bill Murray, and Jamie Surber as em- ployees. Close by is Pat Geer's Laun- derette. Across the street is Thelma West's Hockey Puck Factory where Cris DeBonis, Cindy Pruitt, Kathy Epperly, Chris Whetsel, Mike Apple- by, Steve Leisure and Tammy Riley are employed. Next to this is Kevin Couch's furniture store where Robin Douglas, Justina Hudson, Diane Nighbert, Kelly Broeg, Shirlette Ryan, Cindy Stansberry, and Ramona Tisdale are employed. Kevin's store was recently sold to him by two partners, Donna Harper and Dennis Wellman. The whole town is safe and sound because of Frankton's Chief of Police Vince Kelly and his loyal deputy, Scott Taylor. In another part of the city is Greg Brinkman's Taco Stand. Patty Stin- nett and Penny Marcum are chief taco stuffers; John Fuller is parking cars. At Morgan's Dance Disco, Greg Williams, Rick Compton and Doris Super are instructors. Randy Callahan is employed as the window washer. At the new K-Mart we see Chris Pickering as Chief Janitor with his staff of Jeff Horn, Brenda Jacob- sen, Ramona Hutchison, and Tim Jones. At McDonalds we find Patty Johnson and Don Richardson selling half pounders. Nancye Marsh has opened a dancing clinic. Julie Closser has become the first woman Vice-President of General Motors. At Haynes Memorial Hospital we find Dane Whetsel as Chief Surgeon and rumor has it that Brenda Way- mire is his favorite nurse. Patients there include Juha Skytta, Lindy Vanhoosier, Kyle Barnett and Brett Cunningham. On down the freeway is Les H iatt's coke plant where Mary Kleeburg, Ken Lehman and Kandy Hall are bottle cappers. Smitty's Gas Station has expanded under the new manage- ment of Darrel Bodkin and Rhonda Brashear. Cathy Blackford has taken over Elves Six and hired Pat Hudson, Julie Marsh, Bob Gourley and Steve Hill as her employees. At the new MCL Cafeteria, Greg Karr is manager. Things have changed at FHS also. Dave Huffman is the new principal and his assistant is Arthur King. Teachers include: Donna Walls—English Larry Scott—Electronics Debbie Miller—Trigonometry Levi Cox—Adv. Woods Pam Luellen—Zoology Vicky Dubuque—Chemistry Karla Montgomery—Art Becky Sidwell—P.E. Joyce Nighbert—Driver's Ed Jerry Etchison—Choir Rita Wells—Home Ec. Dwaine Jackson is a bus driver and Carla Schmidt and Becky Underriner are cooks. On the sports scene we see that Robin Taylor is back from the Indy 500 with a victory. She gives credit to her mechanics Sandy Hutchison and Rick Idlewine. Steve Parker is the player coach of the Indiana Pacers. Jeff Munger is back from the Masters Tournament which he won. Julie Brashear and Andy Martin have gold medals in gymnastics from the Olympics. Paul Hogge won the de- cathalon and Mike Baker had a gold medal in the 100 meter run. Terri Davis is now a track star. Don Knotts and Ron Betz are back from the World Series where they led their team to an easy win. Bruce Hughes is the quarterback for the Dallas Cow- boys and is married to Cowboy cheer- leader Linda Schmink. Marc Schultz has just set a new record in weight lifting, and Chuck Covell is the new game warden at Mounds State Park. Frankton's most steady couple, Betsy Brown and Tom Beeman fi- nally got married. Tom asked Bets to marry him and return to New York City where he was President of the Stock Exchange. Other persons still in the Frankton area include Donnetta Beaver Tumulty, housewife and mother; Lynn Hall, telephone operator; Mike Bott, Milkman- Angel Blaylock, 4-H leader; Jeff Dodd, Ice Cream Man; Mary Otto, Piano Teacher; Kevin Shell, Post- man; and Lonnie Engle is the Mayor of Frankton. Frankton also has some local ce- lebrities. For example, Dan Etchison, who made Guiness Book of World Records for Most Seasons ever Raising Seed Corn, and the team of Sumner and Wade who do commer- cials, Cover Girl Kim Banker (who in private life is married to Larry Shively), and Salvation Army Work- er, Barry Roberts. 24 Senior Prophecy YEARS FROM NOW 5? Paul Munson was photographer at the birthday party of First Lady Patti Trogdlen Carter. Guy Thrasher print- ed the picture in his own print shop. Out in Hollywood we find that sev- eral members of the Class of 78 have really made it big. For example: the Holder Sisters are a new singing sen- sation that swept the country. Their back-up band includes Chris Abshire on bass, Michelle Hulett on lead guitar and Penny Rutherford on key- board and Wally Dishman on drums. Kim Miller is the manager of the group. Kevin Miller is printer of the Actor's paper, Variety. Frankton's own Dean Cheetham was recently named on the best dressed list in the U.S. Class members in remakes of old movies are Tony Bailey in “Smokey and the Bandit, Part II; and Jay Claybaugh in Return to Star Trek. Teresa Phipps is appear- ing on Charlie's Angels TV show. Everyone's favorite TV show American Bandstand is now even bigger and better due to the dynamic personality of its new host Mike Crowder. Handsome playboy, Klaus Leitem recently became rich, handsome playboy, Klaus Leitem, when he in- herited Gwyn's chain of drug stores. Klaus's new wife is former Miss America, Peg Swan, in spite of the rumor that he was going to marry Model, Karen Swartz. Literary figures of the class in- A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE elude Randy Gates, editor of Nation- al Lampoon; his publisher Sam Ri- ley, Esq.; Alfredo Azureo, owner of People Magazine; People fashion designer, Sharon McClain; Chuck Pace, cartoonist for Mad, Mr. Pace's Chauffeur Anna Simmons; and the World Champion of Trivia, Dwayne Young. Members of the class haven't been kept out of the limelight in politics either. Carol Hendricks heads the Department of Agriculture. Randy Powell is National Chairman of the G.O.P., while Jim Hancock is gover- nor of Indiana. Now our story is over and the year is only 1978, but who knows, in twenty years from now........... Senior Prophecy 25 Creme de la Creme PRETTIEST HAIR MOST SPIRIT 26 Seniors MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED BEST ACTOR ACTRESS BOOKWORMS Seniors 27 “LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT FHS took on a new attitude and outlook this year under the guid- ance and leadership of the Class of '78. Students and faculty alike took notice of the new found school spirit and interest in school activities. Senior class officers were Mike Crowder—president, Paul Munson—v. president, Betsy Brown—secretary, and Becky Un- derrriner-treasurer. Seniors began their final year busily making plans for Home- coming. Queen Candidates were nominated and the class float theme was Skunk 'Em Eagles. The float brought the Seniors their third victory in float competition. The many weeks off for snow and bad weather made the winter seem to fly by and suddenly it was April, with Senioritis beginning to take its course. The Junior class honored the Seniors at the prom given on May 6, 1978. The month of May was filled with talk of colleges, new jobs, and summer plans as the Seniors approached the long awaited grad- uation day. On May 21, 1978, the Senior class at Frankton High School took their first steps together toward a bright, new future. They are 'brainy', they have ath- letic ability and many are in- volved in a variety of extracur- ricular activities. Class Officers include: Pres.— Jeff Furnish; V. Pres.—Lisa Alex- ander; Sec.—Teresa Beamer and Treas.—Laura Windlin. Kevin Ault, Nancy Hosier and Jill Woodsides represent the class on the Student Council. The Class gambled a little in this year's Homecoming Parade to see if they could improve their winnings over last year's Fresh- man entry. Once again, Lady Luck was elusive—they failed to hit the 'jackpot' when the chips were counted. The big decisions made this year were to choose class colors, class jackets and reserve cheer- leaders. Cheerleaders include: Tammy Hall, Carole O'Bryant, Penny Pickering, and Deena Waymire. Their officers are President, Gay Forrester; Secretary, Vonnie Witmer; Treasurer, Lisa Everling. They have shown that they can win gracefully. They made no fuss when their home- coming float, according to rumor, lost by a mere three points. Confidently, these “greenies proved to be true-blue eagles when they won the sectional spirit stick. To lead the spirit were cheerleaders Jen- nifer Hartle, Kris Bennett, and Jill Merida. The Freshman have purchased class rings, pep-club and F-Troop shirts. The sweaters were purchased through the school and the Freshman class proved to have the majority of the pep-club and F-Troop mem- bers. The Freshman class had a wonderful year and will of course always remember it. Why do they exist? Eaglite tries to answer that What are clubs? Many people may ask what clubs are and why they even exist. Clubs at this school meet during class- time and many a teacher not having recently looked at his or her schedule find themselves a little distraught at hear- ing the announcement that clubs will meet now. It must be disheartening for a teacher to try to teach all the material that they have planned when they have to give up as much as thirty minutes to the meeting of some clubs. There are many interruptions to the school day as it is. There are an- nouncements, letting someone leave early or arrive late to class because of some appointment or sporting event, li- brarians tracking down overdue book offenders and the central office wanting some student to reprimand or counsel. Clubs at this school number eighteen and plans are being made to add at least one or two more to that figure which would add to the number of students who would be missing even more classtime. Where will all of this stop? It will probably stop when there are students who are no longer interested in anything but books and what their classes alone can offer. Any teacher would readily admit that there is more to school than the three r's and book larnin so they would even agree that there needs to be something else to teaching and education than they can offer through their classes. Clubs exist for this reason: to provide that extra chance to learn something on a more individual basis that can not sometimes be achieved in a classroom. YOU CAN LEARN THAT EXTRA SKILL OR HELP SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS HAVING PROBLEMS THAT YOU DIDN'T ENCOUNTER OR HAVE ALREADY OVERCOME. Another important thing that clubs offer is that special attention that can be ap- plied to some specific area that interests students. Here emphasis can be placed on something that does not exist in the classroom or can be an extension of that classroom. Also there are clubs that exist for the betterment of their school or community. These train students and give them the opportunity to donate their time and look at the lives of other people that may be very different from theirs. In this way the school can be preparing people who will, in adult life, perhaps become the civic leaders or volunteer workers that so many cities need and thrive on. All clubs are not good or could they be. In completing this yearbook it was found that some clubs had done little in a year's time that this book could acknowledge. But, many clubs did do good things and did provide students with fun, wholesome recreation and that extra chance to be with and live with other people as we have indicated. To these clubs we salute. We tip our hats to their efforts and progress toward their ends. These are the clubs that the time is worth giving. And any teacher who would look closely at these accomplishments would have to agree with 62 Clubs us and perhaps smile at their achievements. 63 Rushing to meet deadlines. The Eaglite staff worked very hard this year rushing to meet deadlines and staying after school to make up for the snow days they were out for. Everyone working together makes a good book. Special thanks to our editor this year Julie Closser and Mr. Sipe. Both are doing a good job this year. And also thanks to those who put in extra and helped to make ends meet. The color pages weren't put in this year due to the time that we were out of school for the snow. Color pages will be back again next year though. Jo- deen Basey, Cindy Bagienski, Leigh Ann Humphries, and Debby Forrester are planning to attend a Journalism workshop in June. Photographers Brent Waymire and Erick Faust are planning to at- tend an Advanced photography and Journalism workshop this sum- mer at Ball State. This year the Drama Club and Thespians got into full swing with their great productions Our Town and Rest As- sured. 1977-1978 was a good year for the drama department. They were allowed to add a class especially for those inter- ested in drama. They have put on some really good skits for pep sessions and participated in the variety show. By this, much experience has been gained, and everything the drama de- partment attempts to do seems to turn out great. If there is a problem they can take it to the government body and the government body can take it to the administration. Student council runs the home- coming and usually has an annual Christmas dance. Student council members are elected from mem- bers of their class. They must reg- ister first. This gives more of a real effect for voting for the council. President Mike Crowder auctions Jana Sheward and Janet Hartle for the dream date dance. Student Council 68 Carrying the old tradition This year Honor Society started their year with the traditional ini- tiation given to to new members by the seniors. Honor Society earned money by having a coat check at basketball games, and by having a Valentine dance. In April, the Frankton Lions Club held a banquet to recognize the Honor Society members. Honor Society is made up of the top 10% of junior and senior classes. Spirit’s bigger with cheering It was easier for the Pep club F-Troop to yell this year because for the first time in three years, the games were closer and more exciting. Their officers were: President, Betsy Brown; Vice- president, Michele Waymire; Secretary, Linda Browning; Treasurer. Their faculty sponsor was Mrs. Fran Folsom. The majority of the club's activities were ser- vice-oriented. They raised $100 for the Kidney Foundation by selling meter sticks for $1.00 each. On March 11, they had a bake sale. This year, they gave a scholarship to Linda Browning to help further her education in a health-related career. Top left: Nurse Bahler enjoys talking to the Health Club. They're the Jazz Band and are under the supervision of Bob Shipley. This group was created to offer the students both in and out of band a different type of music instead of the conven- tional march and concert music. Jazz Band gave musicians a chance to express themselves in a different way, as many played different instruments than they normally did. After Spring elec- tions the Varsity and Reserve attended cheerleading camp at Smith- Walbridge. The Varsity went on to place 14th out of 96 squads in State Fair competition. Other showings for the Varsity include: sec- ond place in Mounds Mall competition, third place at 4-H Fair, and fourth place at Tipton Fair. Two girls, Julie Brashear and Linda Schmink, merit special atten- tion. Both are four year cheerleaders and are two of the three girls ever to be a three year Varsity cheerleader. 90 Cheerleaders LEFT: Cheerleaders nervously watch the game. Our head photographer of the yearbook Brent Waymire and Head photographer of the newspaper Erick Faust. They have been very helpful to the Eaglite staff in taking pictures developing and printing them. Without Brent and Er- ick our yearbook would not be possible. This year Brent and Erick are planning to attend Ball State for a workshop in ad- vanced photography. For the past two years they have gone to I.U. for a work- shop in Journalism and Photography. Even though the work these two do is very good, sometimes it is very hard to get work out of them. Luckily they can both be conned very easily. One other nice thing about these two hams is that they are the best of friends and they never argue which makes the atmosphere around them so much more pleasant. If only this was true! But when these two do get into a feud and no one can get a thing out of them it is very good to know that we also have two very good assistant photographers who are very dependable and trustworthy. Thanks a lot guys! 3(1 III 92 Photographers r 93 Young trackmen go undefeated 10-0! UPPER LEFT-Brian Jameson hurdles to a reserve victory. UPPER RIGHT-1978 FHS Boy's track team. The Cindermen had a balanced attack in the field as well as the track. They finished second in the Conference, but in the sectional, they did not fare so well. This year's team was lead by two outstanding Senior captains: Levi Cox and Les Hiatt. The team was also accented with the presence of Senior exchange student, Juha Skytta, from Finland. Most valuable team members went to Ben Hall for sprints, Brad Samuels distance, and Barry Kelly in field events. All-conference hon- ors went to Les Hiatt, Levi Cox, Mike Barnett and Sam Ewald for the half-mile relay. There were two new school records set this year: Barry Kelly who jumped 21'8 in the long jump and Ben Hall who set a record in the low hurdles with a time of: 21.8. The future seems to hold much promise with sixteen varsity and re- serve lettermen back to give a balanced attack next year. Coach Davis was really surprised by the great effort given by this year's team, and at their outstanding accomplishments. Boy's Track 95 Girl’s finish rainy season 2-6 The girl's track team finished a rain-shortened season with a 2-6 record. They placed third in the conference and proved to be a competitor in the sectional finish- ing eighth in a field of eighteeen. The girls were led by M.V.P. Tammy Couch who was also in- volved in three of the four new school records. Tammy Hall, Tammy Couch, Marcia Knepp and Nancy Hosier were the four to set a record in the 880 medley relay. Tammy Couch set one in the soft- ball throw and a record in the 440 with a time of 1:02.2. The other record was set by Janet Johnson in the mile run, witha time of 6:20. If the team could get more of the female athletes in the school to participate in track, they would have more depth in the different events and would have a record more representative of the ath- letes at FHS. Coach Davis this year had a balance of underclassmen con- sisting of seven juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen. Brad Samuels was this year's captain, Tony Hughes received the work horse award. Larry O'Bryant was the team's best run- ner. Larry's best time was 13:36. Larry ran to receive the Most Valuable and All Conference honors. Freshman Marty Hughes broke the freshmen record with a time of 14:14. The reserve fin- ished 9-10, while the freshman 'A' team was 2-11, and the 'B' team 5-3. One of the reasons for such an outlook can be traced to the summer programs, where Mr. Bayley hopes his troops will become better. Seniors played a key role in this varsity season. Six seniors Dane Whetsel, Dan Etchison, Larry Shively, Levi Cox, Tim Wade and Steve Parker all played major roles. They began the season with losses to Elwood, Shenandoah, and Mt. Vernon, but came back with a victory over Lapel. The Eagles had one bright spot, however, coming from the lead- ership of the vets. When the un- derclassmen were forced into ac- tion, they were guided and encouraged by the vets. The early going was capped by an outstanding team batting average of .302 which led the county. Three Seniors helped to give the Eagles such an outstanding aver- age. Don Knotts held a .411 bat- ting average with three home runs and 15 RBI's; Ron Betz batted .362 with 4 HR's and 16 RBI's. Larry Shively batted .343 with 13 RBI's and 6 HR's which also led the county. The pitching core was led by Ju- nior Bruce Pritchett who led the team with a .395 ERA; Junior Tony Hughes who led the County with strike-outs; and Darren Korn who had a 3-1 record.
