The year started out like most other school years. In August, there was con- fusion among 650 students as they pre- pared for classes. Students were found roaming the halls, trying to find “hidden” class- rooms—the shop area, cafeteria, foot- ball shed, locker rooms, the portable, and the Ag room. Finding lockers, meeting teachers and friends, adjusting to new schedules and homework after a long summer break, will always be remembered. 3 4 The past year was incredible! It was a bad time to be a legionnaire ... especially if you wanted to attend a convention. CB’ers searched for people with their “ears on.” We had a white Christmas, and a White New Years, and a white February ... Store clerks had a hard time finding places for $2 bills, while consumers had a hard time believing the prices they paid. Severe weather convinced many to store up on groceries before they were stranded again. Another type of flu popped up. A vaccine was discovered for it, but unfortunately some- thing was also discovered about the vaccine. It was linked to a form of temporary paralysis, but the ban on the vaccine was later dropped. Entertainment as usual, played a vital part in the year-from continuing bicentennial celebrations, to newly popular sports, such as racquetball, to ever popu- lar television and movies, such as “Network”, starring Peter Finch. There were bad points, too, in the deaths of old and new favorites, such as Freddie Prinze of “Chico and the Man.”_______________________________________ 5 School activities and problems were important to students, but not just on the local level. Many seniors voted this year for the first time. Some students say that it was not a big thrill, but some felt like they got their “two cents” worth by helping to choose what President would be serving the next four years. Even though the majority of the students backed Ford at the polls, Jimmy Carter and his newly appointed staff won big. And so on inaugural day, Janu- ary 20, 1977 President Carter and Vice-President Walter Mon- dale officially took office. 7 At three o’clock another school day has gone by. Some stay after for athletic practices, special club meetings, rehearsals, cheer- leading or yearbook. This year two special people who had long been associated with Frankton High School and its activities re- tired from the faculty-Mr. Ster- ret Nash and Mrs. Francis Sigler. No matter who you are, you will always look back on the Days Gone By. 8 10 THIS PAGE: UPPER RIGHT-Wishing the other team “good luck” is an important part of the game for the game captains Steve Fuller and Mick Dawson. Drama Club Produces Fall Spring Shows The two-year old Drama Club had quite a few activities this year. Money was raised by hold- ing a car wash in the school park- ing lot in the fall and sponsoring a hot dog stand at half of the home basketball games. In the fall, a three-act play, “The Mouse That Roared,” was performed and in the spring another three- act play, ‘The Stuckpot,” was presented. The club planned a trip to King’s Island as the final activity for the school year. Mike Crowder took over the presi- dent’s duties, and Judi Hosier acted as secretary. Although first year coach Bob Schar- nowske’s team was 1-3 the Eagles dominated the first half and went on to a 30-6 win. The win gave Frankton its first homecoming win ever. After the homecoming win, bad luck came to town. The Eagles came up on the short end against Highland, Ham. Hts., Wes-Del, and Tri-Central. First-time opponent Edinburgh came to town. The first half was close, and the Eagles took command in the sec- ond half for a 36-22 win. In the Edinburgh game, Steve Fuller rushed for 253 yards to become the first Eagle to rush over a thousand yards. VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES El wood 48 FHS 0 Shendndoah 20 12 Ml. The team got off to a fast start, winning its First three dual meets. They sandwiched these victories around a third-place finish against Shenandoah, Yorktown, and Mt. Vernon for a 3-2 record. The Eagle harriers won against Alex before hitting a tailspin. They lost to Ham. Hts., dropped a three-way meet to Ham. Hts. and Lapel, then dropped another three-way. The harriers didn’t fare so well in the invitationals. The best they could manage was Fifth out of nine at Sheridan. Of the 23 teams in the sectional, the Eagles mustered a 16th place showing. Kevin Hudson, owner of three class records, was selected ‘Most Valuable Runner.’ Mike Sheward, owner of the other class record, was elected team captain. The reserves posted an im- pressive 9-1 record. CROSS COUNTRY SCORES Sheridan 33 Mt. Vernon 35 Shen. 43 Yktwon. 45 Mt. Vernon Alexandria 37 Hamilton Hls. 25 Hamilton Hls. 38 Lapel 40 Elwood 36 Mad. F-Troop was a new organization that al- lowed the FHS boys to show their spirit. Approximately 40 boys and 30 girls made up the two groups. Several schools com- plimented the groups on their ability to keep cheering even though our team was often far behind. Another addition this year was the appearance of the Eagle mas- cot, portrayed by senior Rick Quarles. He helped the cheer- leaders with yells and tried to keep the student body enthused. Pep club was led by Pres. Lana Canfield and V.-Pres. Nancye Marsh, while Mike Sheward and Mickey Dawson were co-leaders of F-Troop. RIGHT PEP CLUB and F-TROOP (I. to r.) Pend- leton Heights High School year- book staff sponsored a meeting and discussed different ideas for the yearbook. Later on during the year the newspaper and Eag- lite staff had a Christmas party where the “Roast” was the light of the party. After the first of the year there were many com- plications because of weather, but the many deadlines were met by the hard working staff. Preparation began with Teresa Lindzy. Diana Braddick, and Brent Waymire attending In- diana University for workshops on copy editing, photography and the many jobs of being an editor. Diana Braddick won an award for the most improved copy editing at the ending of the workshops. This summer four students from the Eaglite staff of ’77-78 will be attending the High School Journalism Institute workshops. RIGHT: EAGLITE STAFF (I. lo r.) Row I: Miss Kathic Lake. Diana Braddick. II Tries ‘Wings’ The journalism and printing staffs worked hard this year to produce the first Frankton High School newspaper in two years. The staff worked hard to get their stories and to meet the deadlines. Despite the weather problems and learning new procedures only one deadline was missed. Early in the year a drawing was held to name the paper. Hope Marsh suggested “Wings,” which was the win- ning name. Hope received a free yearbook for her idea. Each paper was special to the staff, but the three most special were the Christmas issue, April Fool’s issue and the senior issue, which consisted of sixteen pages. LEFT: NEWSPAPER STAFF (1. to r.) The Eagles chalked up their first victory of the year by a Yorktown forfeit. The second win of the season came against Lapel. Frankton was led by six pins, two decisions and two forfeit to de- feat the Bulldogs 54-14. In January, Eagle grapplers defeated Sheridan 36-21 for their third win of the season. Steve Marsh and Scott Haney led the team with 9-7 and 7-6 records, respec- tively. By second place finishes in sectio- nal matches. Marsh and Eric Hudson both went on to regional matches. Neither advanced past the regional. Eric Hudson was named team Captain and Steve Marsh was named MVP of the squad. UPPER RIGHT: VARSITY WRESTLING TEAM (I. to r.) Row I Denise Edwards, mgr.. The boys’ team suffered through a 0-20 season, the second in three years. The Eagles played well on occassions but couldn't put together four good quarters. Dane Whetsel paced the club in scoring and rebounding while Brad Samuals led the way in assists. The reserves didn’t fair much better, as they could muster only one win. They dropped their first five games before downing Sheri- dan 45-37 for their only win. Bob Stanley emerged as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. The freshmen posted a better season than their elders; the ‘A’ team posting a 5-7 record with the ‘B’ team finishing 1-7. The ‘A’ team had a good chance of fin- ishing over .500, but three games were cancelled due to poor weather. Dean Riddle was the leading scorer, Ben Hall the lead- ing rebounder, and Tom Gish the leader in assists. The girls had a much better year than the boys as the varsity posted a 3-6 mark and the re- serves a 4-5 record. The girls bombed Alex in the sectional only to receive the same treat- ment from regional champs An- derson. Captain Donnetta Beaver was named MVP while Diane Rehmel was the leading scorer. Both received honorable mention all-WRC. Terrie Couch paced the club in rebounding. During the summer months the varsity and reserve squads attend a one-week cheerleading camp and compete in various competitive events. Last sum- mer both squads attended a UCA Summer Clinic in Colum- bus, Ohio, and competed in the following cheerleading contests: 4-H Fair, Tipton County Fair, and the Indiana State Fair. Last fall, after the election of the freshman cheerleaders, all three squads attended a cheer- leading clinic at Ball State. The all-day clinic provided new cheers, chants, side line yells, and pep session ideas. Scheduled practices are held once a week during football sea- son and twice a week during basketball season. The girls are expected to support ALL ath- letic events and teams, although attendance may not be manda- tory for all games. Keeping the players' morales high, getting the fans enthused, making post- ers and signs, and planning pep sessions are additional activities and responsibilities of an FHS cheerleader. Junior Jeff Munger led the Eagles in all eight of their matches and the squad lost only two seniors this year, Eric Hudson and Jon Risk. The team’s wins came early and at the end of the season. They First beat Mt. Vernon and later beat Wes Del. The last game of the season with Shenandoah and an earlier match with Sheridan were cancelled. Harry Schmink led the FHS hitting at- tack and also led the league in runs w hile being named honor- able mention in the WRC, along with Steve Fuller. Jerry Emmons was named All-WRC and re- ceived co-MVP honors with Schmink. Mark Cox was named captain, while Steve Mundell re- ceived the ‘Most Improved Player’ award. In the spring of '77, 11 let- termen returned from a team that won 11 ballgames and fin- ished 4th in the WRC. Six senior lettermen will be lost after this year, including four-year man Randy Parker and All-WRC player Jerry Emmons. The Eagles won their first game, but an early season hitting slump caused some problems. A highlight of the season was a 6-5 victory over Anderson on the strong pitching of Emmons. Poor weather put the spring season in a balk, but the Eagles looked for- ward to a fine summer program. Freshman Dean Riddle was the first freshman to make the varsity since Parker did so. The nominating of queen candidates Robyn Truex, Lana Canfield, Jane Leathers, and Tammy Bailey was conducted by senior boys in September. Busy and tedious work completed the homecoming float with the slo- gan, “Eat ’em Up Eagles.” On October 23, 1976, twelve girls competed for the title of “Frankton’s Jr. Miss.” Although all of the girls won in the way of friends and experience, Lisa Wit- tkamper won the crown; Theresa Weaver was first runner up and Gail Brown was awarded the “Spirit of Jr. Miss.” By April, seniors were ready for graduation, although there were still six weeks of school left. The first week of May saw se- niors receiving their caps and gowns. On May 7th the seniors were honored at the prom given by the junior class. On May 22, 1977 the senior class at Frankton became men and women of the world. LAURA ADAMS MIKE ANDERSON ROBERT ALEXANDER BRUCE ARNOLD: Swing Choir. This year a dedication was made for sidewalks on the streets surrounding the school. Teachers are a part of a school’s memories and two of those were Mr. Nash and Mrs. Sigler who resigned this year. The National Honor Society presented Mr. Nash with a plaque for sponsor- ing them for many years. Each year the seniors get ex- cited around the last two months they’re in school. Prom, graduation and grad night are among the most important limes. After they graduate it’s a happy time, but sometimes sad- ness comes when they look back on the times and know they can never relive them again except by memories of days gone by. 130 LEFT A horse of a different color?
