The Senior Cabinet
These are critical days in the affairs of man. The world situation has created a
national urgency-something must be done. The schools of our country have been put in
the national spotlight and the so-called "experts" everywhere are telling us what changes
should be made in American Education. There is much shallow thinking and much
more shallow talk about where and how our schools have failed. We agree, that in educa-
tion as in all situations, there is room for improvement, but we do not believe our
school has failed.
Today we are High School Seniors, tomorrow we will be young adults inheriting a
mixed-up confused world. If we had our way the world we face would be much different
than it is, but we had nothing to do with the mess that it is in. Nevertheless, we are
confident that we will find the answers to the problems we inherit.
In the past, Franklin alumni have performed very well in times of peace and in national
emergency. Their accomplishments have won national recognition as demonstrated in the
Bellamy Award to our school.
The challenge we face today is unlike that faced by any other graduating class in
Franklin's history. While the world balances on the brink of total destruction we must plan
for a lifetime.
Because of the democratic practices exercised in our school in the true Franklin spirit,
we face the future with confidence and self-assurance.
The Franklin Spirit means many things, all of which exist in our school because of the
philosophy of one man. His firm belief in the good in all men, even as Ben Franklin believed,
has made our school a wonderful place in which to live, to learn, to grow, and to teach.
His unselfish dedication to you and me and all the thousands of students who now
make up the largest part of -Franklin alumni has been basic in the creation of our Franklin
traditions of which we are most proud.
With these thoughts in mind, we the Class of 1958 wish to acknowledge the person
who has given so much to us in the true Franklin spirit, our own and very dear
As seniors and future loyal alumni, it is up to us to help those who follow us over the
rough roads ahead and to convince them that those roads do lead somewhere.
