The Northwest is che Evergreen Playground. An abundant life in the vast outdoors is ours for the taking. We have a mild climate-a little extra rain perhaps, and much snow in the mountains-but all this spells power. Best of all, our association with people in our wonderful playground means love of fellow man and a deep appreciation of the manifold works of God. UM. arm,-pwwgmr . We, at Franklin, are but a small part of a great Northwest and a mighty nation. Yet the pattern of living we set up here is a basic part of a larger pattern that makes up our national existence. The patience, tolerance, kindness, and goodwill we employ in living together are instrument-al in developing the kind of person who has a sense of responsibility regarding the rights and duties of one person to another, the kind of a person who can meet the problems of life with dignity, assurance, and self-respect. It is from this way of life that a better school, a better Northwest, and a 'KM better nation will emerge. TO CHARLOTTE BISAZZA WE DEDICATE THIS l949 TOLO ANNUAL QQ Often in the years that have slipped by since my graduation from Franklin I have had the occasion to compare notes with other former students of Miss Bisazza. We were all in agreement on one fact-the good start she gave us in our chosen field. Good art instruction is more than a training of the hand to materials and methods. The most. important part is the subtle lodging of good taste in the student's mind which she has always stressed most emphatically and which has proven of such value to those who continue into professional att work, as well to others who absorbed it into their own personalities for use in other careers. "I am just one of very very many people who can speak in a like manner. ,, Www? ART DIRECTOR HOLST 81 CUMMINGS, LTD. Miss Bisazza is, I believe, and always has been one of our most capable art instructors and I was among the fortunate in starting my art training under her guidance. Through all her teaching there radiates a kind and understanding personality that has stayed with me all these years. 7, 1 ago? 5-5740 ADVERTISING ARTIST SAN FRANCISCO ff Congratulations, Miss Bisazza, and a well deserved token of appreciation for the helpful advice and guidance in my work throughout the years. ,, PORTRAIT ARTIST SEATTLE ef My deepest appreciation to Miss Bisazza for enriching my background in the Held of art. C There is actually little that I can say of our Miss Bisazza that would begin to describe my feelings for her. My love for her, both as a real instructress and Ll very dear friend, is truly great and beyond description. My heart is warmed that this annual is dedicated to her. ,, CM. ADVERTISING DEPT. THE WHITIQ IIOUSII SAN FRANCISCO Miss Bisazza has been one of my best friends not only in school, but after graduation. Her friendship has meant a great deal to me as a person and a teacher. I'm constantly reminded of what an excellent start she has given to all her students as well as to meg particularly in the students who Come to the Burnley School and have had the benefit of her good groundwork. 'l'0l0 THIS is the fortieth anniversary of Tolo. Our school, named for a pioneer American statesman, was opened in September, 1906, in what is now Washington Junior High. Until the present building was erected and the name transferred to it, Franklin was a two- year high school, whose pupils finished at Broadway for Washing- ton High School as it was then calledj. The new school early showed its independence by selecting its own colors-green and black-and by starting its own paper, for which the Indian name Tolo was selected. The Hrst number of the new publication ,was issued in October, 1909. It was published as a monthly magazine. When the high school moved into the present building and became a four-year high school, the final monthly or senior number was expanded into an annual. From 1913 until 1919, Tolo existed as both a monthly and an annual. On September 30, the first Tolo Weekly was published, since then the annual and the weekly have continued as companion publications. What does Tolo mean? For an explanation of its significance we are indebted to Ronald Todd, Curator of the Pacific Northwest Collection of the University of Washington Library: "According to Edward Harpers Thomas' Chinook: A History and Dictionary of Ihr' Nartlazvr-st Cons! Trade jargon the word tulo is of Kalapuya origin and means 'to earn, to gain, to win, prevail, control, convince, overcome, subdue, subject, defeat, triumph, manage, succeed, Examples: Kumib dollu nika lolo spose niku mumook? How many dollars will I earn if I work? Wawa pe tolo, to persuade. Nika tolo yaka: I prevailed over him, I beat him, won over him." The membership of the student Council consists of the orlicers or other representatives of all school organizations. The Student Council Committees take care of the many extra-curricular activities around the school. The Noon Dance Committee has put on dances nearly every Wednesdayf. An innovation this year has been the dances where seniors taught the freshmen how to dance. The Building and Grounds Committee designates which group will take charge of each cleanup week. All the large organizations in the Student Council participate. Other committees are the Lunchroom Committee for the promotion of eating in the lunchroom, the committee for aid to foreign countries, and the committee for the sale of lfranklin book covers. The Student Council co-ordinates the work of all the school organizations and is one of the most active of them all. Especially active committees have been Big Cousins, Student Sponsors, Health, Stand- ards, Social Service, Lost and Found, and "Come and Get It." A brand-new group, organized this year, is the Girls' Club Council composed of all the Girls' Club committee chairmen. The Council meets monthly to discuss Girls' Club projects. Taking an active part in school affairs even as Freshmen, we challenged Sophomores and Eighth-graders in a paper drive to raise funds for the memorial plaque. Our Sophomore Week-with its "Hello,,' "Cour- tesy," and "Cotton and Cordsn days-attracted so much attention that following classes have made it a tradition. We won't forget our Christmas parties, especially the Sophomore party when a radio station brought us a program later presented over the air as I-li-Time. As juniors we replaced the soiled classroom flags, sponsored the annual May Festival and "crowning of the queen", and assisted the class of 1948 in its senior activities. Mem- bers of our class have had more than their share of individual honors in Upton Contests, skiing competitions, and scholastic achievements, Our Senior year calendar has been full. The Senior Talent Assembly and Senior Play. "Seventh Heaven" established as fact 49'ers are not ordinary people. The girls fine themselves for failing to attend a meeting or failing to wear the sweater on the given day. This encourages all girls to wear their sweaters and regulation outfits. ln the fall. Quaker Maids add pep to all the football games by supplying the school with pom poms. No Quaker Maid will ever forget this year's Christmas Breakfast. Another activity of the club is taking their turn at clean-up week. All the girls work hard on the new ideas for this project. Another big function is the Mother and Daughter banquet. The credit for this is evenly divided between rlie Quaker Maids and the Franklin Girls' Club. Towards the end of each year comes the Alumni Tea. lt is always fun to meet former members of Quaker Maids and hear how Quaker Maids have changed through the years. A theater party or some other such social function closes the year's activities. Besides these all-club functions, Quaker Maids always have opportunities of attending sueh events as the U. of XV. playday, the all-city dance symposium, and the all-city letter girls' breakfast. 917214 ' DMA, X, OFFICERS mlm! FRANKLIN MUSICAL ACTIVITIES The contribution of Iiranklin musical organizations to the life of the school and as our public relations representatives to the community would be hard to over-estimate. They can always be counted upon for assemblies as well as for special programs such as "Sweet- hearts" in miniature for Founders' Day. The annual Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert have become traditions at Franklin. The half-time entertainment, introduced by our Clee Club and Band, has become an anticipated feature of all football games. Com- mencement is an event which calls upon all of our musical resources. Our seventy-piece all-boys' band, the only one of its type in the city, each year loses about twenty seniorsg so there are always plenty of openings and opportunities for underclassmen. If all the boys and girls who are receiving band training at Iiranklin were combined in one group there would be approximately 160 pieces.
