Many of the students and faculty have served and are serving in the U. S. Navy and that service evokes a warm glow of pride in our hearts. So, to the men of our Navy, we pay this slight but heartfelt tribute- to their courage, to their sacrifice and to their ultimate victory. Pe- titions were put forth and signed by the girls, many of whom are interested in music as a profession. These girls knew very little about music, and much less about playing an instrument, but, by a few private lessons, and hard individual practice, those girls have succeeded in building up morale and character in an organization they can now well be proud of. Franklin niet Garfield in their next game and lost to the Bulldogs 14-O. Bal- lard came next and the Beavers handed the Quakers a thorough shellacking with the score reading 2G-0. A 21-to-6 defeat was then dealt to the Quakers by the l.incoln Lynx. Franklin, however, did not let this game pass without scor- ing. Milt Sturdevant, who had been out of the game because of injuries, was sent in to run the ball over for a touchdown. Broadway was next on the list and, like all the rest, they dumped the Quaker squad. Tt took only one lonely touch- down for the Bengals to walk oft the field with a victory. T.ast, but not least, came the XVest Seattle game, when the Quakers were beaten 7-O. However, this game proved to be a close one. as it took up to the final minutes for the Tndians to scrape up a victory. As there was no play-oft, the tie for the Championship between the Brest Seattle Tndians and the Ballard Beavers remained unbroken at the end of the season. The honorary awards went to Bob Bllis, Gene Allamano, and Roy lohnson. Bob was chosen by his team mates to be the most inspirational player. Gene was voted the best player, and was presented the Sidney B Trathen award, while Roy was chosen the team captain for the season. The scrappy Quaker squad of ,ill was composed of twenty-seven boys. Those who saw action in the back held were: Gene Allainano, Bob Bernhard, .lim Byrd, Russ Delappe, Bill Nordlund, Bill Smith,Milt Sturdevant,QlimTaylor, l,en Tran, and lohn Ursino. BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSl Fon THE second straight year the Franklin hoop squad walked off with the City Basketball Championship, and also gained life-time possession of the Lion's Club Basketball trophy. It was a tough struggle all the way, and at times hopes of winning the championship were rather hazy. The Quakers fared badly in the first round, for they lost three of the six games which was far from a favorable rec- ord. The squad lost a ball game to Cleveland, Garfield, and Queen Anne. Clevelandls winning the game by only one point was a blow, as the Quakers had a three point lead up to three seconds before game time. Garfield was underdog in Quaker- Bulldog match, they upset the team 18-16. After the Hill- toppers dealt them their third defeat, the Quakers went into action, determined to come out on top. They won all the rest of their games and finished on top with four teams tied for second place. Andy Opacich polished off another successful season by making the 'lAll-Cityw team for the third straight year. Jack ua. iacmimffi Leicht and Gene Saalwaechter were placed on the "All-City" 'N' 'mes second team as forwards. The Quakers started the season off by losing to Cleveland 27-26. Gene Saalwaechter turned in the biggest score by ringing up ten points. The Franklin squad came back by defeating Broadway 40-30 in their own gym. Leicht and Saalwaechter tied for scoring honors by throwing in thirteen points apiece. Garfield then handed the Green VV ave a cruel upset in a low scoring game ending l8-16 in the Bulldogs' favor. The Lincoln Lynx, rated as a tough team to beat, were the Quakers' next opponent. The Franklin five knocked the Lynx over in a hard fought 29-21 victory. Jack Leicht provided the main fireworks by throwing in ten points to gain high scoring honors. Queen Anne's Grizzlies toppled the Quakers for their third and last loss of the season. Tt was a crucial game to lose, and hopes of victory became dark. The Grizzlies held the lead all the way and finished with a 35-28 victory. Andy Qpacich turned in his first big game score of the season by ringing up eleven points. VVhen the team came back to defeat XVest Seattle 43-27, the Quaker championship hopes once again were renewed. Saalwaechter was high with thirteen points and Leicht and Qpacich followed with twelve each. The Quakers put this game away with difficulty at a final score of 30-27. Leicht again fur- nished the main fireworks by scoring thirteen points. The Quakers were on their way toward the top, and Broadway's Tigers didn't stop them. The Bengals lost to the Quakers, but not before everybody, including Coach Saalwaechter, was in a cold sweat. It was a close game and a last minute riot was in order, but the final score, 36-34, satisfied the Franklin rooters. The Quakers went on to gain revenge by trimming the Bulldogs 36-25. They won this game in a walk, and once again Leicht turned in a star performance by ring- ing up a cool seventeen points. The Lincoln-Franklin game was one to remember, for it was a thriller all the way. Final score was 50-49. Once again the Queen Anne-Franklin game turned out to be a crucial game, but this time the story was different, for the Grizzlies ended on the short end of a 32-23 score. Franklin's hopes for victory were brighter than ever now. The last game of the schedule, played with VVest Se- attle, was expected to be a cinch, but the West Siders gave the max so.-arm.. Quakers quite a scare in the first period. It was a high scoring LC''lu'"f'j,2,ff,',jW'c"'t"' game, with Andy Opacich turning in twenty points, and the fxplaffial . lHllYj.fl'I final score was 58-37. Then came the Championship game at the University of Vlfashington Pavilion on March 4. This game was a natural, for Ballard and Franklin had never met in the regular schedule. The Franklin squad snapped right into action and threw in three baskets even before the Beavers knew what was happening. The Quaker ball club kept right on rolling, and didn't let the Beavers get within more than six points of the lead for the rest of the game. At the end, a happy, roaring crowd of Franklin rooters proudly carried their victorious team off the fioor. Five Franklin ball players had played their last game before a high school crowd. Andy Opacich was three years an 'fAll-City" basketball star. Jack Leicht and Gene Saalwaechter were two years on a championship team. Leland Seese and Russ DeLappe played their first and last year on a championship team. Bill Sands, Max Soriano, Bud Hjelmaa, and Bob Bernhard filled out the ball club which brought home the bacon this season. Bill, Max, Bud, Bob, and others will all be back to do their hit for the Quakers next year. BASKETBALL Second Team Basketball lSU1i'l.' 1'zm'.'
