AROUND THE TOWN • • • There are places I remember all my life, Though some have changed, Some forever, not for better, Some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life I’ve loved them all. John Lennon and Paul McCarney. From “In My Life”. ' n f ■ m i mm k a J EXPRESSIONS Was I clever enough? Was I charming? Did I make at least one good pun? Was I disconcerting? Disarming? Was I wise? Was I wan? Was I fun? John Updike PANTHER PRIDE Pride means being involved, whether it’s on the field or in the stands. JAftOS It . mmmmm ® j| 9mK J I BETWEEN CLASSES The hallways are not always as quiet and empty as shown in picture 1. Most of the time, you’re inching your way through the massive student body, the yawners, slow walkers, gabbers, and people who gather at their lockers and cause the main block up in the halls. It’s a difficult task at F.H.S., but on the es¬ pecially slow days, we have good ol’ Mr. Quinlan to get the crowd bustling. JSA IhRO 11 CLASSROOMS The myth that classrooms are always the same dull places is disproved here. Classrooms take on their own personality as people sing, observe insects, cook, work out physic problems and use machinery in the industrial arts department. It’s the students at F.H.S. who make their class atmosphere all that it should be. HUNCH TIME There’s no doubting that you ' ll hear many complaints about the quantity and quality of the school lunches; however, af ter all is said and done, I’m sure everyone will agree that lunchtime is truly a relaxing and welcome part of the day. WILLIAM FISKE Mr. Fiske is a person who Knows wnai ne wants and goes out to seek it. This is one of the reasons he has made such a good advisor for our yearbook. Suzanne Quinlan Having Mr. Fiske as our yearbook advisor made me feel confident about the success of our yearbook. Mr. Fiske is a multitalented person whom I greatly admire and respect. His diverse experiences and abilities assure him a prosperous future. Thanks for everyth¬ ing. Love, Sue Abbott man is an experience one should take advantage of. I hold him in highest esteem. A really choice man. Jeff Bird Never have I worked with a person as understan¬ ding, willing and human as Mr. Fiske. During the many hours I spent working on our yearbook, whenever there was a crisis, Mr. Fiske always had a way of enabling us to make it through. He is a person I respect and admire and his character has made a lasting impression upon me. Roberta Heinzmann Mr. Fiske, or Fiskie as he is affectionately called is a man of supreme worth. He has been valuable to us in our quest to make a “great” yearbook. Anytime you got into a jam or needed advice, Fiskie was there to help you. With his competent knowledge in finance, publishing and photography, this year’s and yearbooks to come will be the best at F.H.S. with him as yearbook advisor. To know and work with the This page was not dedicated because of the tradition of previous yearbooks. Rather it was felt by the yearbook staff that this was the most permanent way in which we could extend our gratitude toward Mr. Fiske for his countless hours of devotion in producing what we conside r to be the best yearbook ever recognized at Franklin High to date. ■h MR. CHARLES VAILLANCOURT Mr. V., Thank you for your time, care, ana your con¬ cern. You have helped me and many others through many things. For this, ’I Love You’ Mary Thibeault I’ll never forget Mr. V. and all the good times we had together. He was always there to pull my spirits up when they were down and to lend a helping hand to me or anyone else who needed it. He was more then just an advisor, he was and is a good friend. Patty Talamini (guinea) Mr. V., I’ve come to know you, to love you, and respect you. Be good. Debbie Delfino Mr. V., You’re a person whom I’ve come to know and respect very much. You were always there for me and other people when they needed lifting and told us when our liftings were too much. As class advisor, you have helped our class very much. Thank you Mr. V. for all the things you’ve done and for being there. Luana Mucciarone (Mooch) There is only one word to describe Mr. V. and that’s super. If you have a problem, Mr. V. is the guy to go to for help. He is very special, to me. I Love Him Robin Hayes The Class of 77 would like to express its apprecia¬ tion to Mr. Vaillancourt for his four years of dedica¬ tion. He helped to bring us through the most memorable years of our lives. There are no words that could describe our appreciation except, ’We Love You Mr. V.’ and thanks for everything. CLASS HISTORY Dur freshman year was a new experience for the class of ’77. Gone were the strict rules of junior high, and in was the freedom of Franklin High School. Many of us were frightened by the expansive structure called Franklin High, as the new high school was so much bigger than other schools we attended previously. For the first few days of school, we, as freshmen, were lost in a “hub bub” of upperclassmen, handbooks, schedules, and locker combinations. However, just as mice trapped in a maze, we finally found our way in, around, and out of the school. What privileges we were allowed in high school! The cafeteria study halls provided a club¬ house type of atmosphere. Instead of doing homework, we, as freshmen, entertained ourselves by playing cards, listening to the jukebox, and munching on snacks {only if we picked up our mess.) If we wanted to be studious, we knew that silence was golden in the library. A freshmen’s trip to the library was most often a round trip, as a result of being kicked out for disturbing the peace. Initiation was a constant fear in back of the freshmen’s minds. Although we heard var¬ ious rumors, that may be no initiation we received several threats from the seniors. We finally breathed a sigh of relief when it was announced that upon Mr. Evan’s decision, initiation would not take place. But WHO was Mr. Evans? As freshmen, we knew Mr. Richard Evans as a voice from the front office who performed the morning announcements, and who made occasional trips down the halls between classes. Nino Labadessa’s student council domin¬ ated the political scene at Franklin High that year. We were granted use of the smoking areas, coke machine, and the big event of the year was the Aerosmith concert. Other entertainment was provided by rowdy dances in the field house. Fhe class of ’77 became politically active in early December when the class officers were elected. The results of the election were, Pat Shaw, President, Kathy LeBlanc, Vice- president, Karen Sullivan, Secretary, and Sue Abbott, Treasurer. Our class was not complete without an advisor. The only member of the faculty who volunteered was appointed as our advisor, Mr. Charles Vaillancourt. During the second half of our freshman year some dues were collected and a dance was held, which provided our treasury with ample funds. As the school year was drawing to a close, we began to prepare for our first year of final exams, cursing Dr. Guiliano, all the way. Reflecting on the events of the year past, we found that we survived a year of Algebra I, and Rookie, Doc Sayer survived his seventh period freshman science class, and another unforgettable moment was the streaker who dashed through the cafeteria. Perhaps he was the only one who experienced initiation that year. We left school on that last day relieved that we made it, and eager to return as sophomores only to look down on the new freshmen. A change in leadership positions marked the election of our sophomore year, which was our first event. For the first few weeks of school, the walls of F. H. S. were covered with campaign posters of the competing rivals. The results were, Scott Bartolomei, Pre¬ sident; Robin Hayes, Vice- president; Karen Sullivan, Secretary; Susan Abbott, Trea¬ surer. Many sophomores spent weeks of preparation for the float contest which took place at the Homecoming football game. (The proud blue panther leaning against goal posts high atop a pick-up truck won first prize, and added to the Sophomore class treasury. Geometery and Biology were required subjects for college bound so¬ phomores. Our courses and teachers for sophomore year were chosen by us at the end of our freshman year, as we experienced the first and last arena scheduling. In the Autumn of our Sophomore year, we ordered our class rings from the Balfour Company. Decisions, Decisions! Trying to decide upon a stone color, and emblem for a ring within a reasonable price limit was a major problem confronting us. We were proud to receive our rings in February, which made us feel more like a part of F.H.S. Although not as many sophomores attend¬ ed the Christmas party as expected, we still had plenty of food and fun. Santa even visited our party. The girls that Santa had plenty of gifts to give, right Nick? As the year progressed, plans for our dance in March were near completion. The music of the group “Slippery Elms”, and the flourescent decor transformed the atmos¬ phere of the cafeteria, making it a most profitable and successful dance. )ur next big fund raising event was the first annual flea market, sponsored by the Junior Class. For the first few weeks of June, our class received donations from students and families. Mr. Vaillancourt made several memorable trips across town, including the ride from Oak Street extension to the high school with Miss Hagstroms’ couch tottering on the back of the school truck. As unorgan¬ ized as we were, we managed to successfully participate on the flea market, and make over $300.00. Olass officers for our Junior year were elected in June. Once again the offices of president and V.P. changed. Pat Daily was elected president, Luana Mucciarone V.P., Karen Sullivan secretary, and Susan Abbott treasurer. VVe entered F.H.S. as juniors with a confident feeling of being upperclassmen; two years down and two more to go. Our first major project this year was to complete the planning of the Prom. A class meeting was held where preparations of the Prom were discussed. A number of issues were voted on, such as: dinner, attendance, and theme song. In November we had our first experience with college preparatory exams when we took our PSAT’s. The latter part of ’75, members of the class of ’77 got together and planned a Jr. X-mas party. It was to be held in the cafeteria on the Monday during the week of X-mas vacation. The object of this party wasn’t to make money, but to get the class together and have a good time. It was planned in the style of a pot-luck dinner. But.due to conditions beyond our control a Nor’Easter hit New England, which in turn cancelled our beautifully planned X-mas party. Wha, a better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to have a dance with appropriate decor; featuring “Axis”. On the eve of our SAT’s, the junior and senior classes, through a joint effort, sponsored a dance-concert with the explosive “Thundertrain”. Saturday morning brought in staggering juniors to their first SAT’s. On April 21, 1976, we as juniors held our Prom at the Flame and Sword restaurant iri Mendon, MA. The theme was appropriately “Nights in White Satin”, and the guys and gals felt like kings and queens as they entered King Arthur’s Round. After a feast of roast beef, the couples enjoyed the music of the Jerry Secco Band. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the queen and her court. Linda Roccoforte escorted by Nick Carlucci, was chosen heiress to the throne. Cheryl D’Amelio and Pamela Buchanan, were chosen as prin¬ cesses; completing the queen’s court. Near the end of Junior year things started livening up. Locker gangs were established across from the seniors domain and near the walls toward the library. The 1st Annual Cuggie T-Shirt Day was held and became a bi-annual event soon after it was celebrated because of popularity. The anticipation of being a senior was rising. During the day if there was nothing to do people would cruise the town in their ’mobiles to waste time instead of staying in study. The weather was getting warmer as more kids went out during the weekends. Large parties occurred on every Friday and Saturday night down at the High School parking lot, Wasted Acres, and the 495 bridge. Cars lined up in rows as music blared and friends greeted each other. The Junior class then played in a Junior class- Faculty softball game in which we lost to the teachers by one run. Junior Skip Day was a success as about two-thirds of the class took the day off and went to Wasted Acres or other places of interest. The Junior class then participated with the underclass¬ men in a Flea Market which was both fun and profitable. Oskey, the ’77 yearbook, was started with voluntary meetings and inter¬ views with photography and publishing companies being held. Then final exams took over the school, and as the last day finally passed by, we were at last, SENIORS. For Joe Profenna (3) and Kirk Simon (4) it appears to be all fun and games, but for Paul Chastanet (7), Kathy O’Neill and Cindy Robinson (10) the library is a place for serious studying. The staff, including Mrs. Greenwood (6), Mrs. Allen (8) and Mr. Peters (9) help the students to freely utilize the resources offered by the library. The bell instigates a rush to return books, magazines and headphones to the front desk. - -v. ’ ' ■-! i 1 ■ L Mfiffilll j |; 1 ’i™ !!L Activities YEARBOOK It doesn’t seem necessary to point out that this years year¬ book has taken a new direction and is under new leadership. At the end of our Jr. year, some members of the Class of 77 decided they wanted a more traditional type of yearbook. There were mixed feelings when this matter was presented at one of the more exciting class meetings, but the majority of the votes were in favor of the change. Over the summer, this inexperienced crew of yearbook staff members met and discussed ideas for the book. Originality, organization, and quality were our main goals. It seemed almost impossible, but after weeks of hard work the final pages of Oskey 77 were completed. Senior class officers had Gradua¬ tion exercises, Banquet, Christmas party, Caps and Gowns, Dues (hard to get), Yearbook, Raising money, Class activities, etc., but we managed to be successful in our endeavors. Help wasn’t always available, as we had to do many things ourselves with a few dedicated people extending themselves to aid us in times of need. As Senior Class officers we had good times and fun ex¬ periences serving the Senior Class of 1977. We will never forget the people we met and ac¬ complishments we made at F.H.S. Some called it an experience, others called it a good time; but no matter what people called it, Junior Miss could best be described as being unique. Friendship was strong throughout Jr. Miss 77 and that’s what made it so un- forgetable. Twenty-four strong girls gained friendship, confidence and best of all treasured memories. The contestants of the pageant will never forget the hard weeks of practice, which lead to the fantastic pageant night. Determination carried the girls through these rough weeks but in the end they realized that every bit of work had really paid off. The girls had acquired something that will never be forgotten; they had experienced the uniqueness of a pageant. The Junior Miss for 1977, Lisa Bartelloni, performed a dance to West Side Story (1). All the girls danced together to Yankee Doodle Dandy (4). Sue Plummer (2) played “The Sting” on piano; Terry Mills (3) did ventriloquism with Danny O’Day. It was a time for everyone to change from the everyday routine to a formal occasion in which girls were considered young ladies and boys were gentlemen. The queen and court consisted of, Linda Roc- coforte, queen; attendants were Cheryl D’Amelio and Pam Buchanan. The mugs given to each person attending the prom will help to preserve the fond memories acquired there. Dean Fish follows Luana Mucciarone (1) up to get a better view of the dancing. It consisted of singers, dancers, instrumentals, skits, and pantomimes. Patty Dailey and Laurie Cordeiro (1) introduce one of the skits in their own way. “The Caddy” was a skit performed by Sharon McWilliams and Diane D’Aniello (2). Janet Torosian was Dracula doing her own commercial for soap (3). Danny Dickinson (4) played Oscar Madison’s girlfriend in “The Odd Couple”. Gary Bolduc, Mike Lenzi, Zeffro Gianetti, Peter Zarkadas, and Dick Fiscus performed the song “Melissa” (6). Laurie Cordeiro and Ann DiCecco (7) performed an original mime titled “Seaside Rendez¬ vous”. A new feature to Kaliedoscope was the “Junior Miss” contest. The Gorilla (8) was popular among the contestants. The Hoar sisters, Kathy and Rosemary (10) sang while John Bille (9) displayed his piano-playing talent throughout the show. Led by Paulus Chew and Da-ve MacDonald, the teams high point was its win over K.P. 5 to 0. Due to some of the teams great moves and manuevers, it is sure to return next year, stronger than ever. MATH TEAM The math team on the other hand had a team composed mostly of returning veterans — who led the team to 5th place standing among 14 other schools. Tom Prince and Tom Fording were the outstanding members, scoring high at all meets. The other members of the team include Margaret Moulton, Sandra Arruda, Mary Herrington, Mike LaFleur, Richard Lawhorn, Marie Miller, Robert Minnichelli, Ann Murphy, Cathy Murphy, Kathy O’Neill, Donna Peare, Ron Pettit, Terry Wroblicka, Toby Wroblicka, Jeff Zinchuck, and Coach Belejack. 129 FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUBS The foreign language clubs have been known for their success with raising funds for scholarships and also for sponsoring a spring foreign language festival. With energetic personnel and a new printer, the staff turned out issues more quickly and profitably. They are shown here busily getting ready another issue of “Fine Print.” To wind up our Junior year the class of 77 played the faculty of FHS to a challenging softball game. The news of the game brought spectators from the various classes to watch, of whom two were, Kathy O’Neil and Tracey Konis. The slowness of the game at times with numerous fouls and errors was over come by some of the spectacular plays (4), with Rick Gentili playing short stop, Kevin Kennedy at 2nd base and Mr. Crowley as the base runner. (2) Mr. Chelotti, not knowing it was an infraction of the rules, sneaks off to 3rd base before Joyce Riley, pitcher, had time to release the ball from her hand. (6) Mrs. Berglund awaits a throw to home base, while Jeff Bird scores one of the Jr’s 7 runs. Rob MacDougal takes a thrashing swing at the ball (3). Although both teams took the game pretty seriously at times there would be a chuckle from the players (7) with Kim Ryan, Luana Mucciaroni, and Ann DiCecco. A close game was only determined in the final innings with the teachers winning 8-7. We’re sure that Mike Lenzi will remember how all this material was collected. WORLD EVENTS Fhe summer of 1976 brought about the peak of the Bicentennial celebrations. Climax of the year long celebration took place on July 4th with a huge fleet of tall ships from many nations sailing down the Hudson River. I U was a presidential election year. After a long primary trail, and two conven¬ tions, the race narrowed down to incumbent Gerald Ford, and a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter. These two candidates met in three nationally televised debates, the first since the Kennedy-Nixon debates of the early sixties. After a close, hard fought campaign, Carter came away victorious by a narrow margin. Fhe political scene was also spiced with the sex scandals of Wayne Hays and Liz Ray, the racist jokes of agriculture secretary Earl Butz, (did you hear the one about colored voters.) and a nest of hecklers provoked Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller to “flip the bird”. Around the world earthquakes leveled large areas of mainland China, Turkey, and Guatamala. England and Wes¬ tern Europe, along with parts of Africa and the U.S. experienced severe drought. Riots took place in South Africa and Rhodesia over the issue of white minority rule in these countries. The Israelis pulled off one of the most daring rescues of our time, when they stormed Entebbe airport in Uganda rescuing over 100 hostages. (Bagels and cream cheese for lunch IDI?) Fhe months of December ’76 and January ’77 were filled with an unusually great amount of oil tanker mishaps off the U.S. coast. The largest, and most damaging was that of the Liberian tanker, Argo Merchant, off the Nantucket coast. The Chinese political scene was stunned by the deaths of Chou En Lai and Premier Mao Tse Tung. This left a struggle for power in Red China involving Mao’s widow. Two of the richest men in the world, J. Paul Getty and Howard Hughes passed away, with Hughes’ wealth still in doubt as to its rightful heirs. Convicted killer Gary Gilmore, pleaded for his own death, and became the first person to be executed in the U.S. in over a decade. Freddie Prinze, better known as “CHICO” in the popular CHICO AND THE MAN series committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The year’s top movies included the 1976 Picture of the Year, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, and 1977 Oscar nominees NETWORK, ROCKY, BOUND FOR GLORY, TAXI DRIVER, and ALL THE PRE¬ SIDENTS MEN. 1977 also had remakes of such screen classics as KING KONG and A STAR IS BORN. In 1977 America watched a trio of female detectives (Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith) in CHARLIE’S ANGELS, The Sweathogs of WELCOME BACK KOT- TER, the comical detective work of BARNEY MILLER, and the fifties scenes of HAPPY DAYS and LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY. The hits of daytime T.V. were a new game in the GONG SHOW and a satirical soap opera in MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN. The off beat humor of England’s MONTY PYTHON and the SATURDAY NIGHT’S NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME PLAYERS appealed to many of their viewers. In the world of sports, the Montreal Olym¬ pics marked the summer of ’76. The Olym¬ pics began with several African Nations boycotting the games because of the racist South African government. The Olympic games themselves were highlighted by the performances of Nadia Comaneche, and American decathalon winner, Bruce Jenner. After a disappointing year for Red Sox fans, an equally disappointing World Series took place with the Cincinnati Reds totally domin¬ ating the hapless New York Yankees. New England fans finally had something to cheer about when the Patriots turned them¬ selves around, and earned a playoff berth against Oakland. In a controversial game the Raiders edged the Pats, and went on to win the Super Bowl against Minnesota. The local sports scene was also highlighted by contract disputes of Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson, and Pudge Fisk, the trade of Bobby Orr, and the unexpected absence of Dave Cowens from the Celtics. T he slapstick comedy of MOE, LARRY, and CURLY, THE THREE STOOGES was brought back to the T.V. screen after many protests of its cancellation. Alex Haley’s much talked about novel “ROOTS”, the story of his family tree beginning in Africa, came to T.V. in eight consecutive nights, and became the most watched show in Television History. Olaudine Longet, former wife of Andy Williams, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for the accidental slaying of skiier Spider Sabich. Fugitive Susan Saxe pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to jail for 10 years for being involved in the armed robbery-murder charge of patrolman Walter Schroeder in a Boston area bank. I n mid August of 76, the eastern coast was hit by Hurricane Belle. Although the storm blew out over New York, the Franklin area was prepared with windows being taped and outside objects being secured. The winter of 76-77 turned out to be one of the coldest in the history of recorded weather history. The severe cold caused gas shor¬ tages, school closings and temporary loss of jobs for millions of mid westerners. The winter also marked the first snow ever to fall on Miami, Florida. Several states and cities were declared disaster areas by President Carter. 1976-77 will be - remembered in years to come by the election of Jimmy Carter as president, a parade of tall ships on the Hudson, a severely cold winter, but for members of the class of ’77 it will be remembered as their last year of high school, and the beginning of a new life to come. The chorus (3) led by Mr. Sacco (1) has increased in both size and stature this year. The large amount of boys in the chorus (5) added a deep tone and vocal strength to the group. There were seventeen seniors on this year’s team (9) and Coach Sutherland said they were a great group of people to work with. This year’s senior players are (BACK ROW) Steve Potter, Tony Talamini, Gary Bolduc, Rick Gentili, Dave Boisture, Phil Joannides, Pete Padula and Mike Ostrander, (FRONT ROW) Nick Carlucci, Bob Conlon, Dave Mucciarone, Terry Gordon, Tom Corbett, Dan Cedrone, Steve Adamson, Kevin Morrisey (not shown). Standouts on this year’s team were Gary Bolduc (1) playing at the position of halfback and the ends: Mike Ostrander, who played exceptionally well for his first year and Phil Joannides (8) tri-captain, who came back after a serious neck injury. The players come running on the field at the Attleboro (6) night game where the cheerleaders (2) cheered them on. Some of the games had a good crowd to cheer for the players. (5) In the backfield were two of the captains Dave Boisture (5) who also did a fine job as quarterback and a short yardage man Rick Gentili (4). Bolduc runs the ball (10) with the offensive line (5) doing a fine job making the blocks. Coach Fran Bositis feels it was his players “team effort” that enabled them to become champions. The determination and will to win combined with skill and a lot of hustle are definitely characteristics of this year’s squad. After dropping a heart- breaker to Foxboro High at mid-season, the Panthers didn’t hang up their adidas or throw in the towel. No.in¬ stead the booters came back even stronger, with more fire and more finesse to win 13 straight games. The boys are also co¬ champions, along with Foxboro, of the Norfolk County Soccer League. Eleven graduating seniors will leave the team this year, but they’ll certainly be going in style. The fall of 76 will be a soccer season long remembered. ' -s ' ! (8) BOYS BASKETBALL The 1976-77 boys basketball team was, perhaps, the tallest team Franklin High School has ever fielded. Evidence of this is six-seven Ted Parker (1), boxing out North Attleboro ' s alleged “big man , and six-seven Captain Bob Thorne towering over an Oliver Ames defender (3). More important than more height, however, was the overall talent of the team. Six-four Mike Ostrander (9), exhibits some intimidating defense to support this claim. The team was dominated by seniors, most of which were products of Coach Don Cotter’s efforts in constructing a complete basketball team and program since coming to the town of Franklin. Fortunately, height was not their only asset. Franklin ' s small men played a big role in the Panthers success. Junior Peter Bucchanio (6) at only five-eight, tosses in one on many graceful, driving lay-ups. Further evidence of their backcourt domination are five-ten Ricky Gentili and equally tall Dave Murphy leaping high off the floor for shots (7) and (2). Their bad moments were few and the grim determination on the faces (10) illustrates the reason for this scarcity. While the big men took care of the inside game, like junior Johnny Wall s (3) throwing up one of his patented left-handed hooks, the likes of six-foot Dave Boisture (2) and six-three Dan Myers (5) ef¬ fortlessly took care of the perimeter. As with any good team, when the score is lopsided in their favor, and the crowd begins to lose interest, the cheerleaders were always there to revive the crowd. All in all the basketball season was a successful one for the Panthers. Their record was the best that it has been in decades, and renewed fan interest helped their cause. Maybe once again, Franklin High will resume its place as basketball power that it once held. We know it will of Coach Cotter gets his way. GIRL’S BASKETBALL Carrie Svingen (1) awaits a rebound. Led by All-Star senior center Jean Bassignani and All-Star guard Jackie Lincoln who is only a sophomore, the Pantherettes qualified for the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Throughout the season, the Pantherettes watched the standings closely as they were involved in a tight race with Sharon. During the course of the season, they played two games with Sharon. Both of the games were nip and tuck all the way. In the first game, Franklin was victorious, just defeating Sharon by a mere three points 44-41. In between meetings with Sharon, Franklin played very well just losing one other game to Oliver Ames by a score of 39-35. In Franklin’s and Sharon’s second confrontation, the Panther¬ ettes unfortunately were beaten, 46-41. That loss cost them at least a share in the Hockomock League title. The girls worked hard and sometimes cheered three games a week, proving they were worthy to be called athletes. The cheerleaders did all they could to promote spirit at F.H.S. They decorated the school, locker rooms, buses, and even the players’ lawns. Pep rallies (6,7) were organized and featured at¬ tractions like a spirit contest between the classes and a gong show. The cheerleaders shared the moments of glory and of defeat with the teams they cheered for. There were many tears of joy (3) and of disappointment shed throughout the year. But the cheerleaders, the panther Colleen Murphy (2), and the mascot Sherrie Leone (5), pulled through to Psyche their Panther teams onto victory. Even some of the coaches were impressed by the cheerleaders enthusiasm and determination to prove F.H.S. was 1!! Ml ' GYMNASTICS The 1977 Varsity Gymnastics Team completed another sucessful season of competition. Under the direction of head coach Laurie Corwin and assistant coach Jim Caron, the girls captured the Hockomock League Championship. Meet after meet team members twirled, danced and flipped their way to victory. Poise and grace, as illustrated by Beth O’Reagan (1) on the balance beam are as much a part of gymnastics as skill. Karen Keville demonstrates her agility (2) by doing a back- bend. Sue McWilliams (3) and Debbie Heim (8), both major contributors to the team’s success, perform high risk vaults on the horse. The uneven parallel bars appear to be a difficult piece of apparatus to perform upon but Heidi Swanbeck (4) seems to have mastered the secret. Senior manager Debbie Jeon (6) takes a few moments rest from her schedule to pose for a picture. The only senior team member, Laurie Codiero (5) warms up before a practice session. 8 175 ■ Keep your eyes open for the Supplement. It will be arriving in late summer. It will include pictures of.
