TO THE SENIORS This could well he called the "Era of Advancement” at F.H.S. A new gymnasium and a well equipped science department, both completed during the 1955-56 school year, are illustrative of the great strides which have been made to improve educational facilities at Franklin High in recent years. You, the Class of 1956, have been a living part of this great advancement. You claim the distinction of being the first class to spend four full years of high school in the present building which was completed in 1952. You have also seen and taken part in phases of advancement other than the building programs. During your high school days, student government was introduced at F.H.S. and you helped adopt the Constitution of the Student Co-Operative Association. You are the first group in the history of the school to attempt to raise all the money necessary for the class trip. You have seen the "Mountain Echo” change from a mimeographed paper to a printed monthly publication; the "Laurel Leaf" increase in size including the addition of a feature section and a larger sports section; and an F.H.S. Handbook printed for the first time. Many other things w-hich are a part of school life, such as the library and the band, have also been improved greatly. Let us leave here with the comforting thought that these advancements will continue and those who follow us w-ill enjoy them and benefit by them as much as we have.Shirley Henson Jane Zickgraf Susie Wallace Ann Hall .... After a dismal 3-6-1 record in 1953 and an even 5-5 mark in 1954 the Panthers bounced back and rolled up 7 wins in 10 games to rank number 10 in Western North Carolina according to the final Asheville Times' poll. Although only 2 starters returned from the 1954 squad, the Panthers finished with a 5-2 conference record and were only 1 2 game out of the top spot. Andrews and Swain each ended with 5-1-1 records and Swain won a post-season play-off to take the title. Individual awards went to Morris Jones, who was elected by his teammates as the "Outstanding Player," and Tommy Corbin, who was on the honorable mention list of the All-WNC high school team.
