FACULTY THE HEIRS OF EARTH The poet does not live by bread alone But finds starvation entering in disguise, The prophet does not bleed from stones, his shafts Ot truth, repelled by shields of callousness, lnflict vexatious wounds upon his soul, While he who plays the part of Socrates, And sets young minds atire with flamerwinged thoughts, Is forced to drink the hemlock ot neglect. I have watched with pride and enthusiasm your development and growth these past six years. You have received a sound educational background from an excellent staff of teachers who wish for you the best in life. Scientific advances seem to be bringing all of the people on this planet in close contact with each other. In the struggle for existence and pursuit of happiness in which we are all engaged in one way or another, a great deal depends on our re- lationships with our fellow men. The material needs of the world are indeed great, but in far greater measure is its need for dedicated people interested in the wel- fare of others. May every day and every year give you a wealth of moral' courage, experience, willingness to do, and much happiness so that each member of this graduating class will always bear the label-"a good citizen." JOHN R. HAUBERT Superintendent 6 TO THE CLASS OF 1959 The year 1958-59. A Year of Changes. More new classrooms, cafeteria, closed school day, seven class periods, new subjects-all in keeping with a sound pro- gressive educational program. We trust that your years in Franklin High have given you a sound educational foundation to cope with the changes you will find in the future. HARRY F. NEWELL Principal 7 1 l l Q 2 ': 1 . . Board of Education SE IURS Happy is the man that tindeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the grain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways ot pleasantness, and all here paths are peace. She is a tree of lite to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. None of our activities could have been successful without your advice, encouragement, and assistance. For three years you have been the inspiration of our class. By dedicating our yearbook to you, we want to express our grateful thanks and appreciation for a task well done. 33 I Class History Our class had its beginning when, several years ago, a group of little tots started to many different schools throughout the Franklin Area. For about six years we received our very basic training, giving little thought to the time that has now arrived. Then, suddenly, in the fall of l953, we found ourselves in the biggest, strangest place that we could ever remember-Franklin Jr. Sr. High School. lt seemed so enormous that it took us three years-seventh, eighth, and ninth grades-to get acquainted with the teachers, the school building, and each other. In the fall of our Sophomore year, the Class of T959 was organized under the advisorship of Miss Ida Cardamone. Chosen by the class members were the following officers: President- Bob Dale, Vice President-Art Whitman, Secretary-Jackie Adams, and Treasurer-Patty Hall. Under these leaders and with the help of a capable council, the Sophomores successfully sold homemade candy at the Junior and Senior Plays and the Broadcast. With the arrival of the basketball season came an invasion-the Sophomores selling pencils with the season's basketball schedule printed on them. The highlight of this year was the spring dance presented on March 29. "Le Cafe Paris," with a pink and white theme, transformed the gym into a romantic sidewalk cafe. The last major event of our first year in Senior High was the ordering of our class rings. Our Junior year, which seemed to be our busiest, began with class elections. Art Whitman was advanced to the presidency, Bob Dale was chosen as vice president, and Jackie Adams and Patty Hall received the offices of secretary and treasurer, respectively. Before long our treasury began to grow because of our efficient stationery salesmen. Then, to help celebrate the Yuletide season, the Juniors presented a lovely dance, "Silver Bells." Large bells and angel silhouettes enhanced the walls of the gymnasium. A huge Christmas tree centered the red and silver dreamland. Once again, we resorted to our salesmen to sell candy at the basketball games, and, once again, they proved their worth by making many sales. In the spring, the actors of our class made themselves known by presenting the play entitled, "The Bishop's Mantle," under the direction of Mr. Richard Lewicki. The play was dramatically given, and it was well received. Now all our time and energy was devoted to the one project-the Junior Prom. The Franklin Club was the scene of "Twilight Time" held in honor of our predecessor, the Class of '58. Music was provided by Phil Runzo's orchestra. Shirley Phillips and Mike Marshall were crowned queen and king. The after-prom party followed, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and the P.T.A. Thus, our Junior year ended on a happy strain. Summer passed, all too quickly. Before we quite realized it, we were back at F. H. S. Only it was different this year-We were Seniors! As the first project on our busy schedule, we undertook the sale of Christmas cards. The Senior Play, "The Little World of Don Camilla," was rated as one of the best enacted by high school students for a long time. Mr. Perrine did a wonderful job as director. The year has passed swiftly, and the moment every high school student waits for has now arrived for the Class of '59. Our last year at F. H. S. holds many memories for us. Our football team enjoyed a year of success. We were privileged to have Regula Oser from Switzerland, Rudy von Stosch from Germany, and Tep Utensute from Thailand join us for this year. Our name cards and senior pictures were exchanged. The banquet and dance were delightful affairs, and the picnic at ldora Park was loads of fun. We know we will always remember the impressive closing ceremonies, Baccalaureate and Commencement. Well, farewell, F. H. S., and thanks for everything you have done for us. We enjoyed every minute of our stay here. j 34 Senior Pla F. Hugus, M. Kase, T. Findlan, B. Moyar, C. Foster, D. Adelman, B, Dale, L. Richardson, T. Stefanakos, J. Brown, K. V Lo B. THE LITTLE WORLD OF DON CAMILLO The Seniors presented their annual play December ll. The play chosen this year was "The Little World of Don Camilla," based on the book by Giovanni Guareschi. The story told by this play is about a struggle between the priest, Don Camillo, and the peppery, radical mayor of a little town in Italy. The play was done with wit, humor, and understanding. The play was directed by Mr. Clinton Perrine and Mr. Russell Cerny assisted. Mrs. Jane Haylett, Miss Kathryn Steffee, and Mr. John Primosic helped with the scenery and staging. J. Limber, M. Kase, C. Foster, J. Brown, K. Logue, F. Hugus. Mrs. Mary McQuaid 'S The Student Council is the representative body of the students. It guides and sponsors activities concerning the school and the student body, while working in co-ordination with the faculty. The organization is composed ol one elected repre- sentative and one elected alternate from each homeroom. The Council, under the direction of its sponsors, Mr. Harold Pixley and Mrs, Mary McQuaid, promotes annual sales in addition to its general duties. This year the Council sold enough candy to sponsor an exchange student. Since all the students helped in this sale, we can all feel a part of this represented council. One of the most important is the vocal organizations of the music department: the Boys' Glee Club, the Girls' Glee Club, and the A Cappella Choir. Under the capable direction of Miss Leah Sawyer these organizations have become a construc- tive part of our school lite. The Girls' Glee Club is so large that it is divided into four parts. The girls have elected officers for their separate Glee Clubs and also for the combined Glee Clubs. The Boys' Glee Club, although small in size, has managed to retain its high standard. Besides deriving much of their own pleasure from this organization, they are able to put on a fine program of entertainment. From the Glee Clubs singers are selected to form the A Cappella Choir. The Choir provides enioyable entertainment for assemblies and special programs at school. 66 Kneeling: P. Beach, R. Bacher, P. O'Pollco. Slondlng: Kneeling: M. Pcinier, G. Babbington, G. Grannis, M. During this year the Knights were a winning team, many victories were marked, and many players were awarded individual honors. The successful year can be attributed in part to the fine coaching received in all the sports. The competent components of the capable coaching staff were Mr. McCullough, Mr. Eakin, Mr. Stewart, Mr. Nilson, Mr. Irons, and Mr. Wolfe. With hats off, we salute the coaches, for the school is proud to have supported the able commanders of Franklin's athletic stronghold. We owe thanks to our commander-inechiet, Mr. Treadwell, who directs all that is con- nected with athletics. At any sport event, you know Mr. Treaclwell is there, whether you see him or not, because you can smell the sweet aroma of his cigars. 83 UNDERCLASSM IF If you can dream - and not make dreams your mastery If you can think - and not make thoughts your aimg If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same, If you can till the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
