Varsity Football A hard charging line and fleet-footed backs gave Franklin its first city foot- SEGSOI1 R6COl'd ball title since l949. The Thunderbolts moved to a successful season under the leadership of Coach Bill Barnard and a pair of all-city linemen, Co-captains Jack Carlson and Terry Bjornsen. The Bolts had an overall record of four wins, three losses, and two ties. Our conference record was two wins, three losses, and one tie and in the city race we won two, lost none, and tied one game. Orv May and Ron Helms, also, made the first all-city team. Making all-city second team were Jim Yuill and Bob Matias. All city honorable mention went to Rag Helm, Mike Parker, Dike Scroggs, Bob Woito, Bob Steele, Torn Smylie, Kent Johnson, Ed "Buzz" l.aCombe, and Bob Stephen. Senior lettermen were Terry Biornsen, Jack Carlson, Bob Steele, Mike Parker, Nick Svoboda, Jud Kinch, Ed Koza, Bob Matias, Orv May, Dick Douda, Ed Hubler, Jim Yuill, Derald Hanson, Don Carter, Bob Stephen, Dale Mudd, and Ron Helms. Returning lettermen are Ed "Buzz" LaCombe, Kent Johnson, Fred Johnson, George Forney, Tom Smylie, Bob Woito, Ed Daniel, Curt Winger, Dike Scroggs, and Roger Helm. With a nucleus of these lettermen, it appears that next year the Thunderbolts will field another strong team. 72 Franklin Charles City Franklin Iowa City Franklin Quincy Franklin Wilson Franklin McKinley Franklin Roosevelt Franklin Clinton Franklin Davenport Franklin Washington O T2 6 T3 6 O I3 27 6 Senior Lettermen I954 1.
