By the end of the season they has chalked up 4 wins, but had lost the trophy pigskin on 5 other occasions to rival teams. With this record the team placed third in the city race and sixth in the Mississippi Valley Conference with 2 wins and 4 losses. The Bolts may have been outscored, but never outfought. Terry Bjornson and Jim Ward were chosen on the all-city first team and also received all-state honorable mention. Rod Holtz. Jack Carlson, Dick Brink, and Les Duros placed on the all-city second team. Thus, with a mixture of both victory and defeat, the Bolts ended their second season in the new stadium. MAJORETTES Our football games this year were found to be just as much fun at half-time as during the game due in great part to our six high-stepping majorettes. Gloria Secor. Carol Farchmin. Judy Cleermens, Suzanne Hubbard. Reinette Newbold. Carol Crissman and their very able leader. Head Majorette. Sharon Gaston. The girls were con- sidered by the student body as one of the best groups we have ever had, CHEERLEADERS This year a team of nine varsity cheerleaders, six regulars and three alternates, began the season with a bang as they appeared for our Homecom- ing game in new uniforms of royal blue slacks and sweaters. During the basketball season the girls traded in their slacks for the traditional white skirts. In mid-basketball season Barb Dennis. a regular. moved away. otherwise the personnel remained the same. with Sally Mavis. Janet Fryrear. Kay Culver, Sandra Griswold. Sally Swaney, Bonnie Scheffers. Another hasketf Another cheer! That's the drive and spirit that gave our varsity basketball team a fine season in '53-'54. Under the able coaching of Orville Rust the Bolts started off with a bang by winning their first four games. The "mighty five" had an overall record of 10 wins and 11 losses. With a record of 4 wins and 2 losses we placed second in the city race. In the Mississippi Valley Conference the basket held true to us on 4 occasions, but we lost 7, thus giving us a placing of fifth. Ron Baty and Jerry Seaman were chosen on the all-city first team. while Dick Brink and Dick Mackey, our mid-season losses. placed on the all-city second team. Roger Helm, Rod Holtz, and Dick Sandercock received all- city honorable mention. With the return of Jerry Seaman, Bob Kennedy, Jim Yuill, Dale Mudd. Roger Helm, and Bob Woito we have signs of a powerful team next season. The culmination of a fine season was a victory over Roosevelt. 57-40. to put the Bolts into the sub-state tourney where they lost out to the Clinton River-Kings. 63-50. Congratulations are in order to Coach Rust and the team Franklin SEASON RECORD 45-Oelwein 36 47-Burlington 41 68-Mason City 44 50-Clear Lake 46 50-Iowa City 54 46-McKinley 42 58-Roosevelt 49 53-W.
