Franklin gives one a feeling of belonging. Some acquire this feeling right from the startg others struggle through their sophomore and junior years, eventually discovering the feeling of belonging as a senior, some, sadly, may never find it. ln my year at Franklin High School, l have been fortunate to find it early. Each of you-each student, each teacher, each member of our school and community-has given me the feeling of being a part of Franklin. Indeed, l am grateful to you. l cite this personal experience as an example to anyone, who may be listening, of the importance of belonging. To have pride in one's self, in one's work and in one's associations is a first step toward finding peace and happiness. Far too often in one's life, a person gets the feeling that he is unimportant. It has been refreshing to see that Franklin High School helps make everyone become a part of the school. Perhaps this idea is best expressed in a quote from DESIDERATA: "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy." . c ' Xcfffmfw M , fxwiliw QF 'Qww Q 4 A 5 T .Tf'f"f'2i J A gag-:R ' T- N. Upon entering Franklin High School graduation seemed so far in the distant future. But the years, filled with exciting and memorable events, flew by rapidly. This is in the past now, but surely will not be forgotten especially by me. As graduation nears we suddenly realize that the challenge of new unknown experience will be upon us. With many expectations each individual will go his own way, searching for a goal in life. I truly hope that you all find that right place in life and enjoy it as well. I would like to especially give thanks to Mr. Joe Marmo, for his special guidance and understanding through Fall 73. As the "Year of the Panther" draws to a closel wish the best of luck to each member of the graduating Class of 73. Sincerely, Frank LeBlanc Solarian Class President All City Football All Northern League lst Team-Football Athletic Manager This semester as your Senior Class President I am most honored. I've enjoyed being a part of this senior class. Maturing together with my fellow classmates, as time went by. Sticking close together through all those good times, as well as the bad. Lookingfor happiness and finally finding it here at Franklin. I've also learned that Franklin is a wonderful place to study as well as to find warm friendship. Learning went much more beyond the doors of a classroom, but into our mind. Being a part of everyday life which has affected and determined what we have planned for our future generation. The generation in which we have to live, as well as respect. ' I am proud to say that I will always remember Franklin as part of my life. We have continued to put on more productions than any other high school in our area. ln our constant search for variety we have done three plays ranging from a Greek comedy to a children's fairytale. The first play this year was "Lysistrata", student directed by Sylvia Aro. Our next play was "Martian Chronicles" was student directed by Erin Weigand and our most recent production was a children's fairytale, "Greensleeves Magic", student directed by Madelyn Westphal. Our next production will be "Little Mary Sunshine", a musical comedy. The Drama Department has continued to expand. This year we have a beginning drama class, a stage craft class, an advanced drama and a play production class. This semester the new Thespian Troupe which is open to all drama students who have outstandingly participated in Theatre Arts, really got off the ground and is now growing. There are a variety of activities for all members of Thespians. Franklin displayed a versatile and well- balanced offense and a defense that gave ground grudgingly during the 72 campaign. Proof of the offenses versatility was its ability to score via punt returns, long ground oriented drives, passes, some razzle dazzle plays and even the field goals. Franklin in fact scored more points in league action this year than last year's squad. Defense often makes or breaks a football game and the Panthers rose to the occasion. Of the six victories, Franklin held its opponents to an average of 3.6 points per game. With basically a young and inexperienced team, the Panthers surpassed all expectation for success was shown considerable poise during the season which was marred by just on loss in league competition. Franklin recorded a 2-1 record in pre- season play, defeating favored Grant 17-0 and tough Hamilton 7-3 before falling to Sylmar, one of the three undefeated teams in the city 20-6. League season started on a positive note with Franklin dismantling pre season league favorite Belmont 21-0. Eagle Rock, Marshall, and Lincoln fell by respective scores of 21-6, 14-7 and 27-6. During the season Franklin proved it could battle back from adversity by overcoming Hamilton in the second half, topping Marshall in the final two minutes and defeating Eagle Rock following the Wilson setback. Taft High School closed the curtain on the Panthers but not without a dogfight. Two early Franklin errors gave the heavily favored Torreodores two scores. The Panthers battled back to narrow the defeat to 14-7 and made one last desperate effort in the fourth period which did not result in a score and ended another successful Franklin season. Danny Haro excited the crowd when he scampered 54 yards on a punt return for a Panther T.D. but it was Vince Ballardo who put the iceing on the cake in the fourth quarter on a one yard plunge. Wilson, coming from an impressive 20-0 route over Eagle Rock, came into the game with an offense capable of scoring and a defense capable of stopping you. The officials ruled Otis Olivares ' in out of bounds on a touchdown catch which would have given us a 14-13 victory but instead we absorbed our first loss 13-8. We then defeated a very good Sylmar team 8-7 on a last minute T.D. pass to Otis Olivares and the 2 extra points from Kenny Dison. The Q-A A league season opener was with Belmont High which we handly defeated 32-0. The game was characterized by outstanding defensive play and good execution on offense. Next came Wilson for which we were very uptight and tense and lost 14- 0 after intercepting 6 passes in the first half. Too many opportunities were missed by the offense. This caused the defense to play the major part of the game. The unveiling of Jesse Serrano was the happy side of the ledger. ln his first game he lead the team in rushing for that game. Lightning strikes quick so they say and it struck quick in the next game against Eagle Rock at the Rose Bowl. After leading 14-0 at halftime and controlling the game, the door opened and the Eagles struck for 2 quick T.D.'s and ran the winning 2 points in for a 15-14 win and another frustrating loss. Undeafeated Marshall was the next foe for the Bees and again frustration was the name of the game. Leading 13-0 on T.D. passes by Jesse Serrano and Kenny Dison thrown by Gibby Peterson, Marshall scored two quick T.D.'s with 2:53 seconds left in the game to win 14-13. The entire defense was great limiting Marshall to a minus total yardage for the game. The season ended on two joyous notes First: Lincoln was soundly defeated 14-0 on a sloppy field by a courageous group of young men and second: note tears of happiness from two very happy coaches as they carried us off the field. The team returned to win its second straight league title competing against Lincoln and Belmont in the Northern Soccer League. Franklin's team was a new group with only six returning lettermen. But through Coach Avallone's direction and long hours of hard practice, this new team molded itself into one of the finest soccer teams in the city. They won their first contest against Hoover in which Jose Luis Gutierrez and Ricardo Sanchez scored goals to shutout Hoover 2-0. The second practice game proved an omen of things to come. San Pedro, which had been denied a victory against Franklin all last year, was once again shut out l-0 by Jose Luis Gutierrez's hard, low shot in overtime. The Northern League proved to be the hotbed of excellent soccer. Belmont and Franklin battled each other on three occasions in which two games ended in ties. The first Belmont encounter ended in a l-l tie with jose Avina scoring with a head shot that eluded the Belmont goal keeper. The second time Franklin met Belmont, the game was dominated by Franklin's aggressive offense and defense. Goal were scored by Miguel Tenorio and Ricardo Sanchez in defeating Belmont 4-l. The third and last time Franklin met Belmont, the Panthers need only a tie to clinch the Northern League Title. Franklin gladly settled for the l-l decision and the Northern League Crown. Lincoln had a number of problems keeping players eligible this year. The first time the "Cats" met, the game was decided only in overtime when Dario Pacheco scored the winning goal for Franklin. Franklin's other goals were scored by Ricardo Sanchez and -lose Luis Gutierrez who suffered a broken arm in the hard fought battle. Before Lincoln started the second round of league play, they had lostffive starters due to ineligibility. Franklin easily won the rematch 3-l on scores by Dario Pacheco, Miguel Tenorio, and Francisco Moroyoqui. Having captured the Northern league title, Franklin started its drive in the city playoffs. The first opponent was Roosevelt, a team that had dominated the Eastern league by defeating Garfield, last years city champions. ln this crucial first matchup in the playoffs, Roosevelt played an aggressive five minutes and scored a quick goal. But then Franklin's left wing Dario Pacheco took charge scoring two goals to give Franklin the victory. For the semi-finals, Franklin had to play San Pedro at Daniels Field. The game was deadlocked for three quarters until Franklin's usually tough defense allowed a penetrating shot at the goal to give San Pedro the lead early in the fourth quarter. Franklin's team rose to the occasion and maintained a solid driving offense with jose Escobedo scoring the tieing goal with less than two minutes left in the game. Franklin continued to play excellent soccer in the overtime periods and won the semi-final round. The win brought Franklin into the city finals in which San Fernando defeated Franklin 2-l. Although Franklin dominated the play and took a battery of shots at San Fernando's goal, only Miguel Tenorio could find the net. The loss brought Franklin the city runner-up trophy. The last time a Franklin team had advanced to the final round of the city playoffs was in 1922 when the football team won the city championship. The soccer team has now set an example for all the sports at Franklin to follow. Congratulations to a fine team. 1 1 g 8 n www-Q ix Q QX.MQdQ 'Q VICTOR Y!!! Although school spirit has never been directed towards the dark horse sport the teams fared very well. Head iron man Coach Gus Spraker, was faced with no returning lettermen. Still, hard work and endurance produced a representative team. The varsity team, with Billy Briggs and Ruben Acuna leading the pack, ended up with a 2-3 record in the league. Briggs and Acuna also shared the Cross Country Hall of Fame Award. The j.V.'s, with top men Kevin DeQueiroz and George Villarreal had a 1-4 season. As a result of this you can say that you are aware of the fact that there is an R.O.T.C. unit on the campus, but are you really aware of it? The R.O.T.C. has been a part of Franklin High since 1919, when the Department of the Army established R.O.T.C. in high schools. Since that day in 1919 this organization has served the school in countless ways. A lot of these services don't seem particularily important, but the fact is that it's these small and inparticularily chores that separate the good high schools from the outstanding high schools. The R.O.T.C. has many activities for which the cadets get regular school credit plus they add to the overall prestige of Franklin. ln fact Franklin is recognized as one of the best in the nation by the Department of the Army. The services performed by the R.O.T.C. are done with pride. They are glad to work together with the other students with the ultimate goal of making Franklin better until we Can say that we are they best in everything, anywhere, that we are NUMBER 1. I've worked sometimes 6-I0 hours straight to make the deadlines, missing out on seeing my friends and falling behind in my studies. Both are very important to me, but I feel that I've done the right thing. I'm proud that I have put together a book which is of my best efforts. There may be improvements which can be corrected and mistakes made out of human error, but this, l feel, is the best Almanac ever put out hy Franklin. I'm so very proud that I've belonged to the Almanac Staff. In working in the yearbook, I have learned much. Besides the know-how of publishing a book, organization, and leadership, I have learned many lessons about people. Knowing who your friends are and who is really a devoted worker can be the greatest asset an editor can have. 'Iihe other side of the coin is that I've also seen the laziness and the uncaring. I have learned from both and it has changed my outlook on life, There are many people who deserve recognition for taking as much effort and devotion to the Almanac as I have-IVIr. Larry Messenger, .lanice Frederick, Cathy Albanese, and Roxie Ferris, just to name a few-who I thank with deepest sincerity and whoI wish the best of luck in the future. The Almanac doesn't belong to the Staff. If you aren't pictured in the Almanac, and because of that you feel that you don't belong, you are mistaken. The book is about Franklin I-Iigh School and YOU are Franklin. YOU BELONG!! So take pride in that asI have taken pride in presenting the year 1972 1973. MQQUOLA Reserve Officers Training Corps Benjamin Franklin High School The Army Junior ROTCINDCC curriculum has been developed in response to changing educational philosophies and concepts. The curriculum is designed to support the Army JROTCINDCC objectives which are to develop in each cadet: Good citizenship, self-reliance, leadership, responsiveness to constituted authority, a knowledge of basic military skills, an appreciation of the role of the U. S. Army in support of national objectives, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and an appreciation of the importance of physical education to the accomplishment of these objectives. The Army JROTCINDCC program is an excellent vehicle for demonstrating practical applications of leadership and citizenship taught in many other high school courses and, as such, should be integrated, insofar as is possible into the overall curriculum. Bot.h the high school and community will benefit by having Army JROTCINDCC instruction in the school program. Full use of many years of U. S. Army experience should contribute substantially to the preparation of the .youth of the community for their future role as responsible citizens. y A, , fllL""sf . ltpljgjtm- "---,. s"""1flfHIlIjr1j,,,m, . Currently the Department of the Army offers two types of scholarships-four- year and two-year. Four-year scholarships are offered on a competitive basis to outstanding male students entering college for the first time. Two-year scholarships are open only to students who have success- fully completed the first two years of college ROTC and have been selected for enrollment in the ROTC advanced COUYSQ. Over 5,000 of these scholarships were awarded during the period 1965-1968. The Army plans to continue these scholarship awards ata rate of about 2,000 each year. Army ROTC.
