His name is CAPT john E. Hansen, and this is where he lives. Sometimes silent, motionless as if chair and man were one. Sometimes standing, occasionally pacing, but always alert - always cool. He gazes passively at the ever present sea, giving the appearance of one far away - yet always aware, burdened by responsibility. His thoughts are caught in the wake of his ship. ' ' Captain Hansen was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin but .spent his early years in New jersey. He attended the Naval Academy, where he was grad- uated and commissioned an Ensign in june 1945. After his initial duty aboard USS MASSACHUSETTS, he was trained and designated a naval aviator in 1949. On completing his first squadron tour in VS-32, Captain Hansen attended the Naval Intelligence School in Wash- ington, specializing in the Russian language. He then served tours of 'duty in Air Intelligence on the staffs of COMSEVENTHFLT and CINCPACFLT. From Hawaii, he was assigned to Corpus Christi, Texas where he in- structed students in the jet fighterfattack flight syllabus. Following his next duty under instruction at the Armed Forces Staff Col- lege in Norfolk, Captain Hansen was assigned as Executive Officer of Attack Squadron 72 aboard USS INDEPENDENCE. During this tour he be- came the shipis 'first single and double Hcenturianv for his 100th and 200th landing aboard, 1' In june 1961 he became .Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 12 aboard USS ROOSEVELT. -On being relievedthe following june, he-reported to the Naval War College, Newport, R.I. where he gained his Master's Degree in Political Science and then served a tourof duty on CNO Staff, Plans and Policy. On leaving Washington, he reported aboard USS INDEPENDENCE where he served as Operations Officer during the shipas combat deploy- ment in Southeast Asia, and later as the carrier's Executive Officer. Captain Hansen was Force Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. He assumed command of USS LA SALLE in january, 1969, after which he served on the staff of the Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet conducting management studies. He assumed command of USS F. D. ROOSEVELT October 3, 1970.
