The Frankfort Falcons, after a mediocre record of 10-10, faced the Moorefield Yellowjackets in the West Virginia Regional 3 Tournament held early in March at Potomac State College. Edging Moorefield by a narrow 71-68, the Falcons then confronted the Petersburg Vikings. The Falcon’s Greg Welker pushed up a tie-in shot attempt with three seconds showing on the scoreboard clock, boosting Frankfort to a thrilling 40-39 verdict over Petersburg. This victory moved the Falcons to the Sectional 2 Tournament, also held at Potomac State College, where they struggled for a 61-55 win over Hedgesville. This achievement gained the Falcons a berth in the West Virginia Regional Tournament held at the Fairmont Armory. Frankfort advanced to the state finals after staving off a furious charge by Mannington with a score of 60-55. The Falcons put up a gallant fight in the State AA Semifinals in Charleston, but Winfield scored the last eight points of the game after a 57-57 tie late in the fourth quarter. The hearts of the Frankfort fans sunk as the final three minutes went by without a Frankfort score. As the cheers died, the scoreboard showed a 65-57 score. Coach Keith Sutton and his Falcons ended their season with a fight! 1o88)) COL, Timm) at [eeeccee
