The class of 1983 started the 1979-80 school year filled with apprenhension of the future but also filled with elation over the accomplishment of becoming freshmen. As the class of ’83 passed through the halls of F.C.H.S.. the fledgling birds realized that life would never again be the same. No longer would they be important people. They had become the insignificant class of F.C.H.S. and had to sit in the balcony. The freshman class elected as class officers: president. Kevin Simpson; vice-president. Amy Flughes, secretary Dana Lucas: and treasurer Donna Tomanovich. The homecoming attendants chosen by the freshmen were Miss Lora Kinsman and Miss Debbi Colyer. Mr. Raymond Owens, along with assistance of Mrs. Mary Ellen Dorris, guided the novice group through sales of candy, jewelry, megaphones, and stationery. They worked concessions at various athletic events. The freshmen suffered the various initiations of new clubs and organizations, made new friends, and met the teachers who would attempt to guide them through their high school years. As the school year progressed, the freshmen became more self-confident. They learned that they were an integral part of F.C.H.S. They now accepted their roles in high school. 20Tracy Adkins Julie Akin Tammy Allen Shirley Ambos Johnny Andrews Ronnie Anderson Lenia Anderson Tammy Avery Patrick Barrett Tina Barton Denise Basler James Bock Eric Boehnlein John Borton Andrew Bowling Texas Brandy Kelly Burkitt Rebecca Burnett Rhonda Burton Jay Bussler Jody Calvert Brian Canann Betty Carr Gregory Chance Stephanie Cima Deborah Colyer Donald Connell Darla Conner Nola Cowsert Scott Crawford Mary Jane Cremer Brian Cunningham John Czorniak Fred Davis Brad Dawe 21The Freshmen will always remember Jeff Day Jerry Delgy Tony Donas Gerald Dorris Georgia Dotson Tina Dunning Brent Fitzgerald Ronnie Fitzpatrick Rhonda Followell Melanie Fries Paul Gahn Brad Galli Chuck Gardner Tim Glodich Kelli Golis Scott Graves Billy Gregory Darren Grotti Tony Hall William Hall Susan Hamilton John Hammers Lisa Harper Troy Hart Vickie Hasquin Bobby Hill Darin Hoover Darrell Hopper Bill Hubbard Amy Hughes Debbie Innis Jimmy Jones George Jordan Chuck Karnes John Karnestheir first day of high school life Melissa Kathalynas Randy Katich Kevin Kaytor Lora Kinsman Jamie Langston Keith Lawrence Michael Lawrence Curtis Lee Barbara Lind Jennifer Liska Kecia Little James Logsdon Terri Logsdon Dana Lucas John Lucas Larry Mabry Art Maddox Elizabeth Margelli Ricky Marks Tracy Marks Stephen Marvel Robin Mays Billy McClement Nancy McClerren Floyd McClintock Peggy McGhee Caprice McGhough Denise McGhough Keith McLain Jennifer McMillin Mary McReynolds Dana Miller John Miller Debbie Minich Shelly Mitchell 23Class of ’83 memories will be John Mize John Moake Lee Mocaby Ryan Mocaby Jeff Mull Angela Neal Kathy Nolen Liza Nolen Kelly Norman Billy Odam Jack Odle Jacqueline Opdyke David Osburn John Osterhout Jeff Owens Rhonda Owens Rena Pattarozzi Darla Patterson John Patterson Harry Pearce Michael Peeler Eric Peterson Kevin Pierce Maria Pitz Mark Pool Mike Rachels Elizabeth Raubach Sharon Razer Michelle Reed Ruby Reed Dennis Reeder Harold Rich Richard Richerson Michelle Riddle Dana Robertscrisis in Iran and soaring inflation Roberta Rumsey Scott Russell Jay Sala Ernest Sanders Janet Sanders Michael Sanders Shelly Schumacher Jean Ann Scott Sarah Sheffler Scott Shockley Trade Shupe Amy Simmons Susan Simons Kevin Simpson Jeffrey Sloan Debbie Smelcer Rena Smilanich David Smith Brian Sneed Betty Spain Ben Sparks Donna Sprague Michele Steinmetz Jamie Stevens Theresa Stufflebean Rudy Tefertiller John Terry Joyce Thacker Donna Tomanovich Robert Tomlinson Angela Tresso Cameron Trusty Tim Uhls Tim Vanwey Shelley Volanski 25Angela Wagner Dianna Wagner David Wallace John Wallace Tina Wallace Cheryl Wilburn Pete Wilce Cynthia Williams Kerri Wilson Paul Wilson Dana Woody Scott Wright John Wyant Mari Yadro Brad Young NOT PICTURED Angela Blades Dewayne Brown Steve Clements Jeffrey Crawford Jerry Cullum Barry Mosley Greg Mosley Jim Poole Christine Stanger Jill Stanley Rose Ann Tompkins Michael Wilburn Freshmen display new red hats at football game. 26SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS — Ritchie Morthland, president; Jackie Brown, vice-president; Tammy Hampton, secretary; and Tedria Rogers, treasurer. The sophomore class started its second year of high school full of excitement as they realized that this would be their last year as underclassmen at F.C.H.S. The sophomores, under the supervision of their sponsor, Mrs. Dean, sold candy and Christmas ornaments to raise money for their class. They chose Tedria Rogers and Sherri Maragni to represent them in the Homecoming Court. Many sophomores were now eligible for membership in clubs and organizations. They suffered the humiliation of initiations. “Raid the Rangers” was their theme for the Homecoming float. Realization that they would soon be entering the adult world and be making important decisions about their futures came to seniors this year. There were many things taken for granted for the past three years. Life was suddenly seen in a different perspective. The year's activities helped make the final year an unforgettable one. Raising money to be used for the Senior Film and the Senior Banquet was necessary. The seniors paid their debts by having bake sales, a carwash in September, and by selling the ever popular Redbird derby hats throughout the basketball and football seasons. They also sold concessions at the fresh-soph games. The senior sponsor was Mr. Ron Winter. This is probably the best Turkey Day game that F.C.H.S. has played Benton so the victory will long be remembered. The Redbird team is one of the eight best in the school’s history. Only the 1941 squad was unbeaten and untied. Head Coach Gene Ernest categorized the team as "among the best.” He attributed the team’s success to their willingness to work in the off season. That work paid off, as the Birds went 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference. W. Taylor, J. Cima. J. Eader. D. Davy, and M. Flo-rian were named to the All-South team. This was a slow process spanning two-thirds of the school year and requiring the combined effort of many individuals. The staff is grateful to the administration and faculty for their patience during the production of the RED-BIRD Annual. Thanks also go to the professional and businessmen of West Frankfort for their support and cooperation. The REDBIRD Annual staff extends its appreciation to Mr. Larry DeMattei, Mr. Steve Smith of Delmar Studios, and the participants in the Camera Day contest for their photography work. We particularly wish to thank our advisor, Mrs. Hellen Mary Batts, whose guidance and assistance helped us to meet three deadlines and complete this annual. yC OwG-' y 7 U n -cCC yd, 'TICK, (j lfl. rrv7 IjL.J'J 176AutographsTaylor Publishing Company
