18FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS — Kevin Simpson, President: Amy Hughes, Vice-President. Dana Lucas, Secretary: Donna Tomanovich. Treasurer.
The class of 1983 started the 1979-80 school year filled with apprenhension of the future but also filled with elation over the accomplishment of becoming freshmen.
As the class of ’83 passed through the halls of F.C.H.S.. the fledgling birds realized that life would never again be the same. No longer would they be important people. They had become the insignificant class of F.C.H.S. and had to sit in the balcony.
The freshman class elected as class officers: president. Kevin Simpson; vice-president. Amy Flughes, secretary Dana Lucas: and treasurer Donna Tomanovich.
The homecoming attendants chosen by the freshmen were Miss Lora Kinsman and Miss Debbi
Colyer.
Mr. Raymond Owens, along with assistance of Mrs. Mary Ellen Dorris, guided the novice group through sales of candy, jewelry, megaphones, and stationery. They worked concessions at various athletic events.
The freshmen suffered the various initiations of new clubs and organizations, made new friends, and met the teachers who would attempt to guide them through their high school years.
As the school year progressed, the freshmen became more self-confident. They learned that they were an integral part of F.C.H.S. They now accepted their roles in high school.

50Seniors remember graduation
SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — S. Sakonyi, Treasurer; D. Shupe. Vice-President; J. Mon-dino. Secretary; and L. Wall, President.
Realization that they would soon be entering the adult world and be making important decisions about their futures came to seniors this year.
There were many things taken for granted for the past three years. Life was suddenly seen in a different perspective.
The year's activities helped make the final year an unforgettable one. Raising money to be used for the Senior Film and the Senior Banquet was necessary.
The seniors paid their debts by having bake sales, a carwash in September, and by selling the ever popular Redbird derby hats throughout the basketball and football seasons. They also sold concessions at the fresh-soph games. The senior sponsor was Mr. Ron Winter.

Cheerleaders spur their team on to a Turkey Day Victory.
The 1979-80 cheerleaders were elected in April. 1979. by a panel of judges from various places. Their sponsors were Mrs. Debbie Ricci and Mrs. Connie Howard.
The cheerleaders have worked many long hours to purchase new uniforms. To raise money, they sold candy. Tupperware. memo boards, and merry bells. They also had numerous bake sales. The cheerleaders also sponsored their annual cheerleading clinic for elementary students in March.
The squad was essential in bringing the spirit of the crowd into action during each of the athletic events.

The 1979-1980 Varsity Redbird Football team made history with its stunning 43-14 Thanksgiving Day victory over the Benton Rangers. This is probably the best Turkey Day game that F.C.H.S. has played Benton so the victory will long be remembered.
The Redbird team is one of the eight best in the school’s history. Only the 1941 squad was unbeaten and untied.
Head Coach Gene Ernest categorized the team as
"among the best.” He attributed the team’s success to their willingness to work in the off season. That work paid off, as the Birds went 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
W. Taylor, J. Cima. J. Eader. D. Davy, and M. Flo-rian were named to the All-South team. Named to the South Seven Conference team were J. Cima, D. Davy, M. Florian, D. Ward, and W. Taylor. Bill Terry received Special Mention, and Chick Chandler received Honorable Mention.

Yuhas, Ernest Mr. — 81,86,139.Volume 66 of the REDBIRD Annual has finally been completed. This was a slow process spanning two-thirds of the school year and requiring the combined effort of many individuals.
The staff is grateful to the administration and faculty for their patience during the production of the RED-BIRD Annual. Thanks also go to the professional and businessmen of West Frankfort for their support and cooperation.
The REDBIRD Annual staff extends its appreciation to Mr. Larry DeMattei, Mr. Steve Smith of Delmar Studios, and the participants in the Camera Day contest for their photography work.
We particularly wish to thank our advisor, Mrs. Hellen Mary Batts, whose guidance and assistance helped us to meet three deadlines and complete this annual.
