WE KEPT THE TCDRCI-I OF FREEIDCDM BURNING I UNIORS The Torch of Freedom has flickered many times since it was lighted in the days of our country's youth. just before the Civil Vlfar, when the United States became a house divided against itself, the flame grew very dim. The cause of this war, the enslaving of one race of people by another, almost smothered the flame. The Emancipation Proclamation was the oil that made the flame burn much brighter. The struggle proved that every individual, regardless of race, color or creed, has a right to his own personal freedom 3 for he is a part of this great nation that thrives on individual freedom. The flame Wavered again in the Spanish-American War and in the World War I, when we saw the same principle again in practice, that of a stronger nation trying to dominate a weaker one. Freedom is for all nations, who want its light, enough to accept the responsibilities that are ins arable from Freedom. We all hope that the flame will s , X this present conflict and never flicker again. In this great controve qf principle of selfishness and greed predominates. This war is bein gi, rmine which type of government the whole worl-fl shall have-o Mlm who are trying to recreate the system of slavery, or the Ame government of the people, by the people, and for the people ! Juniors have acquired more 1 lf l freedoms, since they are given more W' , N Q- I if V personal liberties and responsibilit' - eir Junior year. More is expected of us in scholarship and leadership, f cb . a e grown in significance and the under-- classmen look to us as examples the - ay, just as all nations of the world look to America as The Land of 0 1 - tunit . to Torchers who were chosen to k ep the Flame of Liberty burning were our President, joe Hughes 5 Vice-Pr ident, Betty Gore, one of our attendants to the queen, QPatty Davis was also an attendantj 5 Secretary, Bud Roby, and Treas- urer, Bob Scarlett. Because of the light they always gave us in our school activi- ties, our sponsors, Mrs. Vonnie VVade and Mr. Lee Chenoweth, were chosen as constant torchers. Our bright lights in scholarship were: J. L. Haff, Mary Lou Meagher, Cecil Summers, Beth Howell, and John Sakonyi. Outstanding in vocal music were La Vera Story, Ellis Herring, Hettie Shaw, june Kelly, and Charles Smith. In instrumental music Beth Howell, Beatrice Paschedag, Maxine Sheffler, Gene Kaiser, and Eva Lee Uhls ranked high. Outstanding athletes were Jo Hughes, Bud Roby, Ted Bidwell, Paul Matelic. At the close ogsplur junior year we are convinced that the best way to Keep the Torch of Freedom Burning is to acquire all the knowledge that we can, for next to religious privileges, the right to learn is our most precious freedom, for Education enlightens the world and kindles the desire for freedom.
