. X 8 K Dr. Frank L. Cloud DIRECTOR and AIDES OUR commencement speakers have chosen to speak about the schools in war time. What should our great public school system do and what should it refrain from doing? The second is as important as the first, The schools must refuse to yield to pressure groupseotten self-appointedfwho would exploit our educational program under the name of national defenses The schools must refuse to yield to hysteria, whether it come from a group or an individual. The schools must insist, as far as possible, that standards be maintained. On the other hand, and in a more positive sense, the schools must be ready and willing to assist the federal, state and city governments in whatever way they can. They must change their courses and their procedures to suit the particular needs of a great emergency. You have been privileged to attend the public schools of a great city for twelve years. You know, better than many ill-advised critics, how ready the schools have been in the past and are now to perform their function in these troubled times. Your school has a right to expect you to be honest critics of its activities. This high school looks to you to report vvell of a school that has tried to do its best for you. Fourteen
