ff The Castle Gate MARY I1. MILNEI: All hesitant I stand before the castle gate, thnce comes to me, on shadow wings, the call of destiny. Ah, let me pause awhile before I enter in: IVhat shall befall Within this drcam-onchuntul realm, Of strange adventure, of ronmnce, of mystery and fate? And, as I pause, my eyes Climb swift thc Vincwlad wall To Where, unfurled, bright pcnnons flutter t0 the sky; And strains of music from some magic minstrol hand afar Steal forth, on vagrant breeze, to won my lagging feet. This is the enchanted castle of my deep-hid dreams, Which holds, cnfoldcd in a mist of unreality, So much of all Pve hoped, and longed, and yearned to reach. I hesitate to lift the latch and thus, perhaps, Dispel the precious fantasy of youth. Then look I backward oter the path by which I came: And 10! I find it crowded full of living 111011101'ie5m Sweet memories of love and friendshipk cheering smile; And scattered all along my wandtrerts happy way Are dusky, wooded dolls and Howtr-bedizencd meadows gay; And well do I remember one bald, rugged knoll VVhereon, it seemed, there was no room for any loveliness T0 dwell; and yet, in sheltered, sun-warmed crevice, growing there, I found a smgle, starlike, sweet anemone! And so, emboldened by these cherished memories, I turn me back again to castle gate, For now I know that naught of ill awaits me there, Behind the enchanted wall of fancyts Woven dreams. Entranccd, I place my hand upon the latch, And joyously I lift it up and enter in!
