Francis W. Parker- Progress With lit Francis W. Parker School, founded in Mission Hills in 1912 by Mrs. Clara Sturgis Johnson and her husband William, was the first independent, non-denominational, coeducational institution in San Diego. The roots go deep into the city's history. The school has contributed many of San Diego's top leaders, and many of the old- line establishment families of San Diego have attended Francis W. Parker. ' g Mrs. Clara Sturgis Johnson named the school after one she had seen in Chicago which had impressed her. It was named for Colonel Francis Wayland Parker, the famed educational philosopher, who founded what is now the University of Chicago's department of education. The Francis W. Parker School of San Diego was es- tablished on Colonel Parker's three principles: 'lThe needs of society determine the work of the school. The supreme need of. society is good citizenship. The purpose of the school is to present conditions for growth into ideal citizenship. r I V . The school served as a model for San Diego's public schools, demonstrating that a school curriculum should fit the needs of a growing child, develop his latent possi- bilities, and develop his capacity for independent think- ing, co-operation and good citizenship. Today, there is a strong emphasis on the fundamen- tals in basic academic subjects, thus preparing students for admission to colleges. However, Parker School still Dedication . . . 4 Faculty! Parker School opened in December, 1912, in a cottage on Randolph andWashington Streets, for children of the kindergar- ten and primary grades. In 1913, it moved to the Span- ish-styled building designed by William Templeton John- son, on Randolph Street and Arbor Drive. A group of parents bought Parker School from the Johnsons in 1941, so that today the school is owned by the parents of the student body. A Board of Directors elected by the parents directs the policies and appoints the administration. In the 1950's enrollment skidded andthe school was in debt. Under the leadership of Headmaster J. Rollin Grant Ed.D., the school began to grow again. Beginning in 1966, a high school was added a year at a time. Un- der Headmaster Douglas C. Crone Ed. D., the school outgrew the Mission Hills campus. The forty-three acre San Miguel Boys' School campus in Linda Vista was P g purchased. In 1971, the high school moved to the Linda Vista campus while the elementary school remained in Mission Hills. Because of further growth and expanded curriculum, Parker is being enlarged and improved. As Parker ap- proaches its 67th birthday, it is a vital part of the inde- pendent school scene in San Diego. ur Turn 'Nb We are presenting CAVALCADE 1979 with a theme of progress. Progress has always been characteristic of past years, but this year it has been outstanding. The most obvious marks of progress are seen in the addition of new classrooms and a new girls' locker room. Plans are also underway for the construction of a new Fine Arts building to meet the needs of a varied curriculum and the future. Such an environment of progress has infiuenced the direction that the CAVALCADE has taken. We extend a special thanks to Col. and lVlrs. Dave Severance and Dr. and lVlrs. Lewis Palmer for making possible the full color senior section this year. A pat on the back goes to Lisa lVlumby for her innovative copy and relentless dedica- tion, and to Karen Hirr for her diligence in helping to raise money through advertising-the most ads sold in CAVALCADE history. We are especially grateful to our advisor, lVlrs. Spain, for her willingness to allow the changes that have been made in the CAVALCADE. Our co-editorship has left us with many memories: Summer planning sessions. . .
