A -arbafbfak 3 ' Francis W. Parker- Progress With lit Francis W. Parker School, founded in Mission Hills in 1912 by Mrs. Clara Sturgis Johnson and her husband William, was the first independent, non-denominational, coeducational institution in San Diego. The roots go deep into the city's history. The school has contributed many of San Diego's top leaders, and many of the old- line establishment families of San Diego have attended Francis W. Parker. ' g Mrs. Clara Sturgis Johnson named the school after one she had seen in Chicago which had impressed her. It was named for Colonel Francis Wayland Parker, the famed educational philosopher, who founded what is now the University of Chicago's department of education. The Francis W. Parker School of San Diego was es- tablished on Colonel Parker's three principles: 'lThe needs of society determine the work of the school. The supreme need of. society is good citizenship. The purpose of the school is to present conditions for growth into ideal citizenship. r I V . The school served as a model for San Diego's public schools, demonstrating that a school curriculum should fit the needs of a growing child, develop his latent possi- bilities, and develop his capacity for independent think- ing, co-operation and good citizenship. Today, there is a strong emphasis on the fundamen- tals in basic academic subjects, thus preparing students for admission to colleges. However, Parker School still Dedication . . . 4 Faculty! Administration . . . 5 Head1naster's Message . . . .16 2 stresses the development of the entire individual. There have been great changes in the size of enroll- ment and the location of the school. Parker School opened in December, 1912, in a cottage on Randolph andWashington Streets, for children of the kindergar- ten and primary grades. In 1913, it moved to the Span- ish-styled building designed by William Templeton John- son, on Randolph Street and Arbor Drive. A group of parents bought Parker School from the Johnsons in 1941, so that today the school is owned by the parents of the student body. A Board of Directors elected by the parents directs the policies and appoints the administration. In the 1950's enrollment skidded andthe school was in debt. Under the leadership of Headmaster J. Rollin Grant Ed.D., the school began to grow again. Beginning in 1966, a high school was added a year at a time. Un- der Headmaster Douglas C. Crone Ed. D., the school outgrew the Mission Hills campus. The forty-three acre San Miguel Boys' School campus in Linda Vista was P g purchased. In 1971, the high school moved to the Linda Vista campus while the elementary school remained in Mission Hills. Because of further growth and expanded curriculum, Parker is being enlarged and improved. As Parker ap- proaches its 67th birthday, it is a vital part of the inde- pendent school scene in San Diego. Progress has always been characteristic of past years, but this year it has been outstanding. The most obvious marks of progress are seen in the addition of new classrooms and a new girls' locker room. Plans are also underway for the construction of a new Fine Arts building to meet the needs of a varied curriculum and the future. Such an environment of progress has infiuenced the direction that the CAVALCADE has taken. We extend a special thanks to Col. and lVlrs. Dave Severance and Dr. and lVlrs. Lewis Palmer for making possible the full color senior section this year. A pat on the back goes to Lisa lVlumby for her innovative copy and relentless dedica- tion, and to Karen Hirr for her diligence in helping to raise money through advertising-the most ads sold in CAVALCADE history. We are especially grateful to our advisor, lVlrs. Spain, for her willingness to allow the changes that have been made in the CAVALCADE. Corbin Born and raised in Maine, she graduated from Maine Central Institute. She received her B.A. at Eastern Nazarene College, Mass. She attended U.C.S.D. and San Diego State. She taught at the Polytechnic School in Pasadena before coming to Parker in 1973. After playing uhard-to-get for quite a while, she Hnally came to her senses and married Robert Mark Corbin on April 30, 1971. Six years later, on Thanksgiving, their son Robbie, a five pound, seven ounce ulittle turkey was born. He has since become the idol of the senior class, and is always affectionately known as lIThe Kid. When asked her feelings about the Class of '79, she is sure to say that she will miss them after they graduate because she has grown very close to them during her years at Parker. When the senior class is asked about their feelings toward Mrs. Corbin, they are certain to say that she has been one of the outstanding inliuences and inspirations in their lives. She has become a good friend to all of them, and has helped many with problems in and out of school. However, what most endears her to all of them is her love of humanity, her enthusiasm in the classroom, her stories about IIThe Kid, and of course, her famous UA-ha! A-ha! It is with great pride and a twinge of sadness in leaving, that we dedicate this CAVALCADE 1979 to our beloved Mrs. Corbin. Crone, headmaster, has constantly strived to keep Parker the quintessential private school. His capable leadership, unfailing opti- mism, and foresight have kept Parker a vital and growing school. His nine years as chief administrator have won him immeasurable respect from the faculty and student body. lVlrs. George Smith, assistant to the headmaster, manages to remain calm under the pressure of being second in command. Her trouble- shooting keeps the Parker ship sailing smoothly. A Parker alumna, she is a loyal Lancer. Nlr. Bennett, dean of boys, teaches math and is Director of Athletics. As Director of Athletics, he is respon- sible for setting up Lancer sporting events. A busy lVlrs. Barrett, the new dean of girls, also teaches eighth grade English and creative writing. In order to see the high school girls Hunder pleasant conditions she advises the Senior High Girls' League. Pat Helwig, Jan Rogers, and Lisa Hume comprise Parker's efhcient secretarial staff. She is also a bookkeeper in the accounting department. These sentiments, ex- pressed in Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES, where the Oxford Cleric is dis cussed, are those reflected by Parker's faculty. The desire to teach is mag nified by the desire to learn, and this brings an urgency to the realm of academics, and an excitement to the world of physical education that is not limited to this time or this place. It has reverberations that echo throughout the year and into various colleges throughout the country. The Parker faculty represent, collectively, those for whom education is a way to excellence, and that way is contagious. Left: Dione Brooks, Girls' P.E. But this group had its relaxation, too. One popular time was lunch when they trooped up to the front of the line Hen masse. Palisades Gardens was the scene of roller skating followed by dinner and dancing for the second. These were typical of the various types of entertainment they enjoyed. February's elections brought a new board headed by Karen Hirr, Pres., Lisa lVlumby, Vice Pres., Jim Ilko, Treas., Tiffany Kemp, Sec., and Susan lVlcKig, Commis- sioner of Publicity. Plans were being made for a jogathon, a costume ball, and the Year-End dance at the Coronado Cays. l Jordanna Bloom, President, Anna Palmer, Vice Presi- dent and Jennifer Iverson, Secretary-Treasurer were i elected executive board members of the Junior High . New programs were begun under the new advisor, Nlrs. Barrett. Among them were holiday clothing and food drives and Ca- reer Day. A cookbook was compiled for IVloth- ers' Day. Traditionally, the Girls' League decorates the football field and the Lower School auditorium for Homecoming. This year was no exception with brown and gold streaming from the stands The dance featured old newspapers and other nostalgia. The 1978-79 board members were: Courtney Field, President, Laura Wolf, Vice President, Tiffany Kemp, Secretary, Chris Trepte, Trea- surer. Class reps were Liz Gildred, senior, Lisa Nlumby, junior, Allison Gordon, sophomore, and Jennifer Jenkins, freshman. y' f 1.-ia. . The Junior High Girls' League proved to be fun for both the oflicers and the 7th and 8th graders. They held a Halloween Party, sold candy bowls for Christmas presents and planned half of the games nights where peagreeners and cabbage-heads did everything from bowling to roller skating. Their advisor, Mrs. Fisher, along with the board members: President Holly Hanafin, Vice President Kristen Jackson, Secretary Janet Hughes, and Treasurer Jennifer Ray worked hard to bring about a successful year. Accomplishing a next to impossible job of representing 57 girls were the class representatives Kristine Choconas, eighth grade, and Jamie Berg, seventh grade. .1 t ......- 1 - Top, clockwise from left: Liz Gildred, Tiffany Kemp, Jennifer Jenkins, Laura Wolf, Allison Gordon, Lisa Nlumby, Courtney Field, Chris Trepte, Center, back row: Holly Hanafin, Christine Choconas, Janet Hughes, front row: Jennifer Ray, Kristen Jackson, Jamie Berg. The crowning of the Queen highlighted the fun and fan- tasies of Spirit Week '78. The parade of costumes began on lVlonday with Western Day and continued throughout the week with Tourist Day, '5O's Day, lVIovie Star Day, Carnation, and Brown and Gold Day. The traditional Pep Rally was presented by the cheerleaders Friday afternoon. There was only one sour note in the week when Parker was defeated by Pacihc Christian 40-6. This was the Hrst Home- coming that Parker had lost in four years. The loss did not seem to affect the mood at Parker's tradi- tional dance that night. Whether going stag or in couples, students turned out in capacity crowds. The Homecoming Dance at the Lower School featured PHENOIVIENON, the most popular hard rock band. SPICE provided the entertainment for the Winter Dance held at the Town and Country Hotel. It is interesting to note that although SPICE is San Diego's top disco band, Parker stu- dents only wanted to hear hard rock sounds. The annual girl-ask-boy Sadie Hawkins dance was en- joyed by a large crowd at the Lower School with MICKEY RATT playing the tunes. The Costume Ball was popular this year because a band, TEASERS, was featured for the first time. SPICE returned at the Year-End Dance held at the glamorous Coronado Cays. Mrs. J Bronowski came to speak at a senior class meeting. A Mormon couple spoke to the junior class about the Mor- mon Battalion and Mormon influence on San Diego's heritage. All the classes went to see ROMEO AND JULIET at the Loma Theater, and 7-8 grade classes went on field trips to city hall and the downtown library. Language classes took field trips to sample various cui- sines at restaurants in San Diego, and then put on a 'lingua-Faire in March. Top: Mime Steven Banks used masks in his performance this year. Due to the large staff, the VIEW was successful in covering a greater number of students, activities, and sports. Student participation was promoted through letters, guest editorials, and polls. New features such as uDear Lenny and individual coverages of each grade added spice to the VIEW. Other innovations included the blue Christmas issue which was due to the paper shortage, but proved to be popular. Again the students participated in the Journalism Education Association workshops and write-offs. At press time they hoped to bring home trophies as they did the previous year. They enjoyed the annual pizza dinner with the CAVALCADE staff in June, where new members were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Society. Editor-in-Chief ...................................... Cum Laude Sets Academic Goals Eric Allison, Barrie Berg, Beth Lavender, Katie Palmer, Nina Severance and Julie Wahlen were the members of the class of '79 chosen to bein- ducted into the Cum Laude Society. Their names were sent to the national organization in 1978. The Parker chapter, which received its charter in 1978, is an active one. Under president David Rus- sell, the group is making the Cum Laude values of honor, justice and excellence a part of the school. Writing a constitution was their first task. Their goals of helping other students and setting up an honor code were incorporated. The chapter members began a speakers' bureau. They hosted Rita Bronowski, widow of Dr. Jacob Bronowski, for a senior assembly. Dr. Dorothy Riggs of San Diego State University spoke about China. At press time they were planning more lectures. A tutoring service was being set up so that ad- vanced students could help those having trouble in specinc subjects. Another project was a college book for use by juniors and seniors filled with answers to question- naires sent to former Parker students attending college. 58 ' 5 Parker's nrst active chapter: Front row, Sue Greenway, Nina Severance, Eric Al lison. The size of the squad was increased to six cheerleaders, a change that seemed to symbolize the growth in Parker's spirit. The girls began by travelling to Stanford for summer cheerleading camp, winning the coveted llSammy Spirit Stick for being the most spirited squad. Because of all the fun and the new friendships, camp became an unforgettable experience. Their wild antics throughout the football and basketball seasons drove their advisor, Nliss Brooks, crazy, but proved to be their own unique way of getting tired up. The varsity, along with the JV, put on a Homecoming pep rally Hlled with cheers, a lap sit and their original version of 'lSybiI. A fantastic improvement continued all season as the team be- came more accustomed to playing together under excellent coaching by Dave Glassey. Gabe Zatarain proved to be an indispensable of- fensive force all year, including a 26 point perfor- mance against Santa Fe. Gabe's spark on offense added extra spirit to the young squad. Randy Laser and Dan Sulzer started every game for the cagers. They both played a sturdy impres- sive role from the start. Team effort proved to a valuable concept throughout the season. In both cases they were led by seniors lVlatt Crosbie and Steve Sei- ber. Crosbie's last-second shot won the Parker In- vitational for the team and his consistent play throughout the year made him a strong contender for the Southern League's most valuable player. Sei- ber's consistency on the boards and shooting made him a prime candidate for the first team. In the playoffs the Lancers met Borrego, and handily defeated them, led by lVlatt Crosbie's 27 points.
