The death of two popes in eight weeks had put the Vatican into a turmoil. This had all come about with the death of the newly elected Pope John Paul ll on Sept. 28 at the age of 65. Pope Paul VI had enjoyed a long reign before him, visiting many lands, and end- ing with a simple and stately funeral and burial in a crypt at St. Peter's. ww John Paul took his name from the two previous popes before him, John XXIII and Paul VI. The beginning of this treaty is traced back to an arduous 13 day summit meeting at Camp David in September 1979 when Pres. Jimmy Carter force- fully forged an agreement between Israel's Prime Min- ister Menachem Begin and Egypt's Pres. Anwar Sadat. ff Pres. Anwar Sadat Despite these agreements there was a continued dis- pute between Carter and Begin over new Jewish set- tlements on the occupied West Bank. Meanwhile, Sadat and Be- gin were given the Nobel Peace Prize for 1979 for their peace-making in the Middle East. "The real prize is peace itseIf," Begin told Sadat. Sadat agreed saying it "adds a new obligation on both of us to achieve peace." That obligation was ful- filled, with Carter's help. 'i Prime Minister Menachem Begin GOV. KING The Massachusetts gover- norship was won this year by a man who promised to raise the drinking age to 21, bring back the death penalty, and cut back the property tax by S500 million. Now, about four months after his election, Gov. King has realized very few of his goals. The drinking age will be raised to 20 as of April 9, 1979. Nothing has been done about the death penalty, and Gov. King is making many enemies in his effort to a- chieve his promised SSOO mill- ion roll back in property taxes. I Q. . The S.G.A. accepted the proposed center last April 1978 and the proposal was then sent to F.S.C. Pres. Justin McCarthy for approval. He refered this proposal to the F.S.C. Board of Trustees' attorney to be checked for legality. The proposal was delayed at this point due to a ques- tion of funding for certain forms of birth control. Ex- ecutive Board met with Pres. McCarthy several times in October 1979 and disatisfied students picketed out- side his office. "No f f CONFIDENCE" Pres. Justin McCarthy Due to the controversy over the delayed gynecolo- gical center on campus, the S.G.A. voted "No Confid- ence" regarding Pres. Just- in McCarthy. Siegel, as- sistant dean of students. 9 7 As adviser to the senior class, Sue, as she is af- fectionately called, is always available for her ad- vice and opinions. X 9 7 1 Sue is also a big aid in the publishingiof this book. She calmly listens and gives sound advice to dis- traught editors. 9 9 c i For these reasons, Sue deserves the honor of the dedication of the 1979 Dial. Opportunities which were passed up freshman year are suddenly reassessed and often taken the second time around. Decisions concerning majors which will greatly affect your career and your life. You find your not a freshman anymore but you're not quite an upperclassman. You realize you don't have all the time in the world. The remaining three years could pass you by without any realization. This, combined with the fact that the team practiced long hours and every day, paid off for these men in the end. There were many close calls which made the already excit- ing games more so. Even if they weren't close, the games could never truly be called dull! FSC hopes to see more of the same type of play next year and in the years to come in this up-8t-com- ing sport on campus. Though pride and de- termination were major factors in the team's suc- cess, much of the credit is due to Coach McKenzie and his son, Steve- the assistant coach, for their excellent coaching ability and faithful commitment. The entire squad hopes to see them back next year. Julie Nau was the MVP of the team and De- nise Huxley was the Un- sung Hero this year. U5 "I"l W TI I all LI all! Even though their rec- ord was 5-5, the 78-79 FSC Men's Tennis Team had a winning season. With a few breaks, the record could easily have been 8-2. Only twice were they overmatched Conce it was due to the weather more than the opponents' abilityj. Next season, it looks like another winning sea- son barring injuries and transfers, as most of this year's squad will be re- turning. Only John Petrie, an outstanding player and an All-Conference se- lection, graduated, leav- ing a nucleus which should be tough next year. FSC faculty, student body, athletic dept., and the coach, Warren Mc- Clure are all looking for continued success next year and are proud of their success. .Nl ,l x - s.
