Seniors 76 X Organizations 138 f Faculty 164 X Classes 192 f Directory 214 X Ads 223 3 President Dr. D. Justin McCarthy 4 To the Seniors: During your own four years of growth here at Framingham, you have witnessed marked growth in the college itself. Also you have seen many changes-and in- deed you have been an integral part of them. You helped dedicate that spacious new addition to the campus, Hemenway Hall. You entered as members of the first class including majors in the new liberal arts programs, soon followed by medical technology and biology majors which took their place alongside the strong and highly regarded home economics and elemen- tary programs. You saw the gates of Framingham open to young men as the undergraduate college with its new programs became co-educational for the first time. It was during your days here that new plans were formulated which will bring full-time graduate students to Framingham, other plans which will result in non-teaching majors for those who want the advantage of a college education at Framingham, even though they do not plan on a career in teaching. We are fortunate that a century and a quarter of rich history and strong tradi- tion has provided such a firm foundation on which to build change and to plan for the future. It is my confident hope that your contributions to a changing and complex world will match and even outreach the record of splendid contributions achieved by past graduates of Framingham. Framingham has become a better college because of your presence here. I hope that you will find more and more with each passing year that Framingham has equipped you well to teach the coming generations and to face the needs of troubled and changing times. I hope that often in the coming years your thoughts will return back to Framingham and that your footsteps will bring you back to college hill. ...Q .1 ns. 5 1 .mp W ' 1 ,, ,f W , ,731 ,,-. Integrity, fairness, and a sincere consideration for the individuals he works with both in and out of the classroom, round out a personality which students cannot only respect, but admire and strive to emulate. The final achievement is not recorded at college. Our growth at Framingham cannot be measured by academic performance but by productive lives. Learning is the key to further and better living. 16 I 4 279 04 f ' f ,: wi' fr "'fP!APf'f'PPff' rr!'!'ffL, f ' kgs '- 'W A T' 1' 1 1' f'Hfi'Trf:4 X.. -,Nia :IM C SENIORS President Vice President T' mn GERALDINE JACKSON JANE WALGREEN Elementary B.S. MAY DAY "Pierre" Jost Cclass advisor? speaks to the class on May , Day. How do you like the beret? May Day is the sophomoreis special day, and the theme our class chose was "Springtime in Paris." The campus was gaily festooned with notable Parisian scenes. Chapel was first on the agenda, and we proudly marched into the audito- rium to take the seats of honor. After- wards we attended classes, appropriately garbed in 'shot pink" dresses with match- ing berets. When classes ceased for the day, the festivities began. First was the Maypole Dance, followed by the pageant and the crowning of the queen. At night, a dance was held to draw the memorable day to a close. i .2 'V 2-"7 A lm. if VI Use your imagination! Communications is of extreme importance in any situation where a group of people desire to have information. The Gatepost is our college newspaper. The members of the staff spend much time in trying to make it serve its innate purpose of spreading news while it is still news. They keep the students and faculty informed of different aspects of college life through news articles, editorials, and features. The Gatepost has made tremendous advances in its past thirty-five years. Since the school is growing and expanding so must the college newspaper. The staff this year has worked to put out a monthly issue instead of the usual eight per year. News coverage has expanded to meet the need for reporting up-to-date events of the ever maturing campus. Special additions this year have included the Culture Corner, Class and Club News, Fashion Articles, Exposure on campus sites, and Sports Column. Increase in communication between the staff and administration has allowed the paper to give students latest releases as to the activities of the college administration and future college planning. The Jewish Times Publishing Company in Brook- line has been of extraordinary assistance in putting the Gatepost to press. 124 IL1:15 A.M. NOVEMBER 19, 1965 ttittt Aitntsoin stittggtiofggg Around The tradition of our Black and Gold Weekend started back in 1914 as Harvard-Yale Weekend. lt was held the third weekend in Novem- ber, the weekend ofthe big Harvard- Yale game. At that time the com- petition was between the Harvard and Yale teams in basketball only. The team colors at that time were red and blue, the school colors of Harvard and Yale. The first year Yale won by the score of 36-3. In 1922 a dance called The Mock Man Dance was held on Friday evening to open the weekend. The basketball game was held on Sat- urday afternoonrand a banquet was held on Saturday night to end the weekend. This format for Harvard- Yale Weekend was kept until 1928 when a field hockey competition was added and scheduled for Sat- urday morning. The next change was made in 1950 when the name of the weekend was changed to FRATEACO, short for Framingham Teachers College. The colors and team names were also changed at this time. Black and Gold, the school colors, were now used with the team names. The new teams were the Black Knights and the Gold Stars. FRATEACO Weekend consisted of a rally and talent show on Friday night to start the weekend off and arouse the enthusiasm for the games the next day. Saturday morning the field hockey game was held and on Saturday afternoon there were basketball and volleyball compet tions. This was the first year for the volleyball team. It was added for more competition and also so there would no longer be a tie between teams. The weekend ended with an informal dance on Saturday night in the gym with a banquet in Peirce Hall before the dance. In 1061 another change was made. A baton and drill team was formed and performed for the first 'ime at the rally on Friday night. The next year found another name change. This time it became FRASTACO since Framingham was now a state college. After much controversy in 1963 the weekend was changed to Black and Gold Weekend for the school colors and competing teams. Then in 1964 the Newman Club decided to sponsor a communion breakfast to end the weekend on Sunday morning. Thus through the years a sports weekend has developed as we know it todav. Each year the sports weekend was sponsored by the athletic asso- ciation oi the college. Last year the athletic association became VYeekend known as the Women's Recreation Association due to the fact that the college became co-ed. This year the Student Government and the Newman Club are joining the W,R,A, in sponsoring a busy weekend. The opening of Black and Gold Weekend 1965 will be ushered in with a rally and talent show in the gym. At 8:30 the Student Gov- ernment is providing entertainment for the rest of the evening. Satur- day morningwillfindthe field hockey and volleyball teams ready after weeks of practice for the big game. The cheerleaders will beon hand to cheer on their teams. On Saturday afternoon the basketball team will be playing its best hoping for a victory since the team with the most wins will be the winning team for the weekend. Enthusiasm and team spirit is constantly mounting during the last weeks and days before Black and Gold Weekend. The cheerleaders cheer on their teams in the dining room the last few nights before the big day. Excitement reaches its climax after the games on Sat- urday when the winner is announced. Saturday evening at 6:00 is the setting for the Black and Gold ban- quet in Peirce Hall which will be decorated in a manner relating to the theme of the weekend. At this time the teams are introduced and the winning team is formally an- nounced. The managers for the next year's teams are also announced. At the stroke of eight the gym is transformed into a ballroom decorated in the theme of "Moon- light and Roses" for the dance. 'I'he weekend is concluded on Sun- day morning with a breakfast spon- sored by the Newman Club. The weekend ends with many happy mem- ories: memories for the winning team, and hopes for the loser that next year will be their year. For the Dast five years the Black Knight team has been victorious. This year who knows? November 20, 1965 the decision will be made. Best of luck to the Black Knights and the Gold Stars. We welcome you, the newest members of our association. You are very important to us. We need you. We need your youth, your enthusi- asm, and your loyalty if our association is to keep alive the values and traditions for which Framingham is famous. Because the world is your hearthstone today, you will be a living symbol of all that is Framingham, and will be representing us in every corner of the globe. We like to think that "Live to the Truth" is as important today as it was 100 years ago-as important in India or in Africa as here on our beloved hill. And as we congratulate you, we look proudly at you and feel sure that the future of Framingham is in good keeping.
