The universality of this maxim cuts far deeper than the inscription found on the familiar stone facing the entrance to Dwight Hall. These words have a personal significance, the value of which we have begun to realize in college and which will sharpen with each year of our adult life. Therefore our theme serves as a reminder to us of our purpose in living and our goal in life. A teacher Whose quiet wisdom balances with his matchless humor and maximum patienceg Scientist, scholar, connoisseurg friend, advisor, ambassador - versatile in many ways. Our memory of your understanding and encourage- ment will remain indelible. In gratitude we dedicate our yearbook to you, DR. DANA NELSON JOST , 1 ww -may ..-4 up -4.-s 4 , v ,Q . !2 I 5 A x v . History of the Academic The damp and drafty halls of the medi- eval buildings were primarily responsible for the origin of the tradtional cap and gown. At early English universities in or- der to distinguish the ditferent degrees of learning, the colors, material, and designs of the scholars' gown and hood diifered. Even when the fashions changed, the aca- demic gown stayed the same because it was prescribed by the university and it was considered an honor to wear it. In America, in 1895, a commission of leading educators with Mr, Gardner Cotrell Leonard devised the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume. A charter was granted to the Cotrell and Leonard Firm to act as sole depository for the Intercollgeiate Bu- reau of Academic Costume. This firm is to this day recognized as the authority on all academic dress. At all ceremonies it is proper for the can- didates to wear the gown significant of the degree to be received or last received. The Cap and Gown mortarboard cap is worn whenever the gown is worn. After the degree is conferred the tassel is always placed on the left front quarter of the cap. The hood is the most outstanding feature of the academic dress. It adds color and real meaning to the costume. The hood is bordered with velvet or velveteen of the proper width to indicate the faculty. The reading of the degree, not the department in which the major work is done determines the proper border. The colored lining inside the hood is the otlicial color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The type and style of the hood and gown depends on the degree earned. The use of caps and gowns among Ameri- can colleges and universities is now prac- tically standard procedure. As traditional symbols of academic achievement, they give the higher institutions a beautiful and im- pressive method of signifying scholastic honors. o fy Q " .Q ' . ,, 45 Q 1 . s"+.'fT-" 51" ' . . Men said, as they saw its beauty, 'alt shall never know decay, Great is thy skill, O Builder! Thy fame shall endure for aye." A Teacher builded a temple With loving infinite care, Planning each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing efforts, None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the teacher huilded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the Builder's temple Crumpled into the dust, Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust, But the temple the Teacher huilded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful u11seen temple Was a child's immortal soul. Each year evokes a sharper sensitivity to the philosophical signiicance of our theme: "Be not merely good, Be good for somethingf, To each class the words convey a different message.
