' This is .three CAPTAIN ROBERT E. MCCABE, USN times past the same island! X5 JK 7 O G OFFICER , Captain Robert E. McCabe was born in Minneapolis, Minne- sota, on 15 January 1926, and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He' attended the University of Minnesota inthe V- 12 Program, 'grad- uated with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned Ensign on 2O,February 1946. He was subsequently advanced' to the grade of Captain to rank from 1 July 1967. ' .After receiving' his commission, he served invarious units' of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and atseveral shore stations until 1959. He graduated from the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, in 1960 'and thereafter served as Executive Officer in USS CUSHING and USS TURNER JOY, and then as Commanding Officer in USS SAMUEL N. MOORE. Following completion of a three year tour in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in 1966, he successively served as the Commander of ESCORT SQUADRON THREE, DESTROYER THIRTY-THREE and DE- STROYER SQUADRON THIRTY-ONE. From November 1968 until July 1970, he was assigned as Chief of Staff and Aide t0 Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla SEVEN andthen served as Commanding Officer of USS DALE QDLG- 19juntil her decom- missioning for modernization in November 1970. Captain McCabe assumed command of USS FOX QDLG-33? on 22 January 1971. In addition to variousservice medals, he holds the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat V, Navy Unit Commendation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and Viet- nam Navy Medal Second Class. . Captain McCabe is married to the former Ruth lannucci of Coronado, California, and presently resides with his family in San Diego, California. His eldest son, Robert E. III, is a Mid' Shipmiin. at ,the .U.S. Naval Academy and the remaining eight children of the family reside at home. . Captain McCabe will be leaving FOX soon to assume com- mand of U.S. Naval Destroyer School, Newport, Rhode Island. ' Q

HECK ,Educated at the Univer- sity of Southern California, CDR Heck graduated in June of 1958 with a B.A. in International Relations. He was simultane- ously commissioned E n s i g n, USN through the School's NROTC program. After an initial tour aboard USS PLEDGE CMSO-4923 as lst Lieutenant, Minesweeping Offi- cer, and Supply Officer, he re- turned to USC in July of 1961 for study in the School of Law. The following March he re- turned to the Navy and spent a year as a Communications Watch Officer for CINCPAC- FLT. Next came Submarine School and a tour as Weapons Officer and then Chief Engi- neer aboard USS BUGARA QSS-3315. Following a tour as the Navigator and Operations Officer onUSS NATHAN HALE CSSBN-6235, CDR Heck became the XO of USS TRIGGER QSS- 564y. ' - Having qualified for com- mand of submarines, CDR Heck reported to FOX in December 19714 His position as Executive Officer on a DLG should lead to his qualification for command of Destroyersalso.
