EARCH A D RESCUE SAR or Search and Rescue missions for downed pilots are something every ship hopes there is never need to actually use, but when the need does arise it is a matter of life and death and the ship must respond immediately. On 30 December 1971, FOX was called on to perform a SAR. An A-6 aircraft with two fliers aboard had gone down along the North Vietnam coast after being hit by a SAM. Our helo moved in and picked up the BombadierfNavigator de- spite heavy fire from the beach. The rescued aviator, LT William F. Burton, was returned to FOX for treatment of burns and a broken leg and then flown back to the carrier. Photo sequence shows: Upper left, the wounded flier being removed from the helo and placed in a stretcher. Center, Big Mother crew- men taking abreak after rescue. Lower left, Helo from the carrier arriving to pick up the injured flier. Below, Doc Riddles directing stretcher bearers as they carry the bandaged flier to the waiting helo.

FLIGHT UART RS Flight Quarters was at least a once a day evolution during our line periods, many times it turned into very lengthy operations. As a result FOX flight crew personnel often put in long hours on station. Our secondary mission in the Gulf was SAR, so we were home to the HH-2 Clemintines and HH-3 Big Mothers of HC-7. But when a ship is at sea for thirty days, another kind of helo becomes more important to the crew, an HH-3 without SAR equipment known as the Log Helo which brought our mail. And on a few occasions we welcomed aboard a CH-46 Flying Banana bringing groceries from an AFS. 4 W HOLIDAYS AWAY F OM O R FAMILIES Everyone is blue when away from home for the holidays. As you know we missed a bunch of them this year. But the extra effort of our cooks made it feel a little more like home. At Christ- mas, we even had achoir for our religious serv- ices, furnished by St. Mary's of Hong Kong, and the orphan's party provided the sound of children laughing and the sights of Santa, Christmas presents and of course, a tree. So even if it was not like being home, we still had a lot to be thankful for on each of our holidays. wi' ' J' - - . gl i n A N4 S 'R-'3 X 1 W X 'Xu f if 5 as Writ ' X I C' F' Tx kv ff fff X f f 1 A I 1 Y, 1 I iff' ' K 1 f, 1 N ,IH v 1 I 5 ' , X brig 1 1 .4 QA Ax vi O 0 K ' that v, w nl.
