On the day before we would pull into a port or whenever she needed it, we would conduct a salt and fresh water washdown. This meant hooking up the fire hoses and giving the ship a good bath. Except most of the time it turned into a water fight of Operations vs. the deck force. As the cruise started, this space slowly but surely was transformed into the new ship's radio station broadcasting on two channels, known as KRANI ANI and FIVI. An idea that wouldn't work soon proved to be a major morale booster on a once quiet ship and music filled the air throughout the day. The station's very existence became a reality through the efforts of YNSN Ralph W. NIcKee who used to be a discjockey on WIFI radio in Philadelphia, Pa., before entering the navy. Also assisting YNSN NIcKee in the construction and operation of KRANI were, Technical Engineers: FTNIZ Steve Nlorrison, and FTIVIZ Ken Denton. DJ's IFox Jocksl were: DS3 Bruce NIcCoIlum, ICZ Rick Boyden, EIVIZ Brother Don the Wizard Peterson, FTG3 Nick Boyett, SN Country Donnie Baskette, SF3 Tommy Krause, SN Danny Holly, BTFN Ed Gramspacher and STG2 Charlie Betz.
