It demands tire and steam, and 'the men who generate and control this power are ithe firemen and boiier technicians of B division. FOX's boiler system generates 1200 PSI, 975 F gsteam. This steam has a diversity of uses, but the Hprimary function is to drive the turbines of four ship's service turbine generators and the turbines of two main engines. The ship was commissioned at Long Beach Naval Shipyard on May 28, 1966 and is assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. USS FOX KCG-335 is assigned to Cruiser-Destroyer Group THREE. FOX is the third naval vessel to be named after Gustavus Vasa FOX, President Lincoln's Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. Through Secretary FOX's encouragement, the Navy was committed to the use of "lronsides," and he was responsible for having naval engineering added to the curriculum at the U.S. Naval Academy. The first vessel to be named after Secretary FOX was Torpedo Boat 13, commissioned in July 1899. lt served as an experimental vessel until decommis- sioned in 1916. The second vessel to be named after the Secretary was the destroyer FOX QDD-2345, commissioned in May 1920. It served the Navy faithfully for 25 years from Constantinople to Dutch Harbor. The current FOX is one of the Navy's most modern and complex warships. She is 547 feet long, 55 feet wide, and has a full load displacement of 7,900 tons, her speed is in excess of 30 knots. Armament includes anti-submarine CASROCJ and anti-air QTERRIERJ guided missile. FOX was the first ship in the Pacific Fleet with the capability of launching both missile types from the same launchersystem. This capability resulted in significant reduction in the cost of the missile system. The dual-purpose launcher increased the effectiveness of the ASROC missile by providing stowage capability and a protected magazine. The missile systemsaboard FOX can automatically locate, track and engage enemy aircraft at extremely long distances. With the help of computer techniques they can destroy the enemy before he can get within range of a carrier task force that FOX is designed to protect. The ship is further equipped with two quadruple-cannister HARPOON surface-to-surface missile launchers, a 5-inch, 54 caliber gun, two MK32 torpedo tubes and Vulcan Phalanx Close in Weapons System. Detection equipment includes the AN! SOS-26l3X "Super Sonar," the ANXSPS-48 radar, a three dimension, height-finding air search, computer-controlled radar, and OUTBOARD, a sophisticated electronic warfare system. She is also equipped with the Naval Tactical Data System QNTDSJ for high speed computer processing and dissemination of tactical information. FOX has received the following awards: Meritorious Unit Commendation iwith one bronze starl, Battle Efficiency "E" Ribbon iwith three "E" devicesl, Navy Expeditionary Medal iwith one bronze starl, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal iwith one star,l Vietnam Service Medal iwith two bronze starsl, Humanitarian Service Medal iwith one bronze stari, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon iwith one silver and two bronze starsl and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. USS FOX was the recipient of the FY87 Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award as the most battle ready ship in the Pacific Fleet. . FOX is manned by a crew of 450 men and 30 officers. l l l ll, SHIP'S CHARACTERISTICS USS FOX CCG-335 OUTBO RD ADCOCK ANTENNA ANISPS-48C ANISPS- ME ANISPS-'IDF ANIURN-20 , ANISLO-321V 3 HARPOON TACAN IPORT 8: STBDI I ANfspG.558 -5 Anfsrc-sas - , I -dh, 5- .. mx 10 Gmtsf MK 42 4 ASROC 5-754 Gun 4 .33 . Hong Kong HONG KONG - Referred to by many as "The Pearl ofthe Orient", l-long Kong is a city of contrastg the old and the new, the East and the West, the rickshaws and the Flolls Ftoyces. From the New Territories with its spreading squalor to Victoria peak and its high rise apartments all one sees is construction. With an inexhaustible labor supply one can have anything made locally for almost nothing, and l-long Kong's status as a free port means low prices on goods from throughout the world. But Hong Kong is more than just a bargain hunter's paradise, it is Stanley Market, the Star Ferry, the night clubs of Kowloon andthe Wanchai, the peak tramway, the floating restaurants at Aberdeen, and the junks picking their way through the crowded harbor.
