OGL5 3400! 3011! UCILJ, Word CGPOAHG 0I"el,UOI" "An empty house is like a stray dog or a body from which life has departed." As a house is constructed from the foundation up, piece by piece, so is the life of a person built, deed by deed, from infancy to adulthood. Architects determine the shape of a house just as teachers help shape and direct the life of a school child. By adding or taking away, the workmen may alter the entire appearance of the house. By the understanding and guidance of a teacher, a child's life may also be altered until he becomes an entirely different person. As a student enters junior high of Four Oaks School, he is like the lowly acorn, which is small in size but great in potentialities. When planted and nourished, the same lowly acorn will slowly begin its upwardijourney toward its destination--a lofty, majestic oak, later to be transformed into a lovely dwelling place. The seventh grader may be likened to the insignificant acorn--slowly pushing his way toward becoming a member of the senior class, and later a worth- while citizen of the world. Many changes must be encountered and surmounted before either the acorn or the seventh grader reaches its goal. With persistence and determination, the individual who wishes may make of his life a lovely and worthwhile structure. On the pages of this book are recorded for all to see some of the stages of growth and the incidents that help to fashion the life of a student. It is the wish ofthe ACORN staff that only pleasant memories will drift to the mind of each student as he opens his yearbook--the ACORN, 1958. 366660 fion 21 Wfff '-"'i""-Q In the memor of eve d y ry gra uating senior stands at least one teacher whose image Will always be sharp and clear. For loyal guidance and sympathetic understanding, no other teacher can measure up to our high school principal, Mr. Keene. For his steadfast interest and devotion to his school, we, the 1958 class of Four Oaks Hi h School ' ' 8 , are proud to dedicate this, the tenth volume of the ACORN, to Mr. Worley Keene. ,gn Memoriam JANET GRICE Born, February 23, 1942 Died, August 5, 1957 LINDA BEASLEY Born, July 28, 1944 Died, October 23, 1957 IN MEMORIAM Strong Son of God, immortal Love, Whom we, that have not seen thy face, By faith, and faith alone, embrace, Believing where we cannot prove, Thine are these orbs of light and shade, Thou madest Life in man and brute, Thou madest Death, and lo, thy foot ls on the skull which thou hast made. Thou wilt not leave us in the dust: Thou madest man, he knows not why, He thinks he was not made to die, And thou hast made him: thou art just. Thou seemest human and divine, The highest, holiest manhood, thou: Our wills are ours, we know not how Our wills are ours, to make them thine. In the hearts of everyone bubbled a thrill of achievement, of awe, of gladness! Our minds drifted gently, willfully back through the years, remembering the day we became Freshmen-- Oh, that was a happy day! For eight years we had struggled and had grown with the expectation of at last being in high school. With all our immaturity and irresponsibilities, we tripped ever so innocently over the monitors in the halls and came in late for classes .... But, still we continued to grow intellectually and by the time we were sophomores, we had become accustomed to the habits of the upperclassmen. .Our friends laughed at our silly jokes and each new day brought a thrill of encouragement .... Our junior year was full of activities and roaming the halls in fits ,of laughterg our minds became dimly aware of the future with all those money-making campaigns! Magazine sales! Oh, those evenings in the cottonpatch! Didn't we have fun! We breathed a sigh and our unforgettable junior play, "Headin' for a Wedding" was on the road! It was a grand success along with our junior-Senior Banquet! Chinese waiters and waitresses finished carrying out the theme while we dined in our "Oriental Gardensf! What fun we had decorating the gym, and espe- cially visiting the wishing well which lent enchantment to the ballroom floor. Then, suddenly we were seniors! The days flew by. Everywhere there was a buzz of activity and forever the noise and clamor of students on the go. Remember that last minute cramming for mid-exams? The Senior Content Battery Test? My, wasn't it hard to keep up with all the ball games! Oh, happy day! At last our class rings came--in all their glory for everyone to see--the gorgeous rubies embedded in gold bands .... We chose the superlatives, our senior play went off with a bangg and thefbustle of the annual staff con- tinued until our yearbook, the ACORN, had been completed and with splendid results was sent to the stu- dents. Admiration filled the eyes of everyone as the Seniors one by one took their seats as guests of honor at the junior-Senior ..... Wasn't the food wonderful! The days sped by and with them came term papers and more studying for final exams .... The fitting of our caps and gowns was a new experience but behind all the laughter and chattering lay heavy hearts One world built on a firm foundation were the words that broke the monotone of silence and all too soon we were marching back down the aisles One last glimpse of all the dear faces a choked sob a hushed goodbye Now was the Big Day the day when each of us as individuals was to take that giant step outinto the world a world that can be either cruel or kind depending mainly upon the type of person each of us is But in this wonderful country of ours with God as our Leader nothing is impossible for the 1958 graduate with his rosy dreams of the future Betty Rose Hockaday e t ' ' ' 1 1 ' X 1 . . . . - . . . . , .. 1 7 , Y Nj. .v:.t. So it is with a school. The Student Council is the heart of Four Oaks School. From this student government, which is composed of dependable, trust-worthy,law-abiding pupils elected by their ' fellow class-mates, come the regulations that direct each student's life at school. From this or- ganization comes also, when needed, just punishment for the offenders who do not abide by the rules.
