One evening I was sitting in my apartment feeling all alone and sorry for myself. Very unexpected- ly the bell rang. "Oh, how nice," I thought, "someone to talk to." You can imagine how delightfully surprised I was to see Jo Ann Snead, my oldest and dearest friend. After talking a while I discovered she was in town to attend a newspapermen's convention. I also found that she was editor of her own newspaper and that Cooper Beasley and Earl Cobb were giving her a great deal of assistance as assistant editor and business manager. . On reading the paper she had brought I found that several of my former classmates had come into the news. As I continued to scan the paper, I saw an interesting picture. In the foreground of the picture I saw Bobby Bass and Cornell Cox, outstanding personalities in the business world, who were leaving for a luxurious vacation in Hawaii. In the background I saw Jerry Revels, the pilot and Gladys Allen, the stew- ardess. An article which was very noticeable was headlined as follows: "Cashier in City Bank to be Tried for Embezzlementf' Those concerned in the case were: Robert Ferrell, the certified accountant who found the evidence in the bank's books, Joe Carl Barbour and Linwood Johnson, detectives from the Batten and Hines Detective Agency, headed by Charlie Batten and Curtis Hines. The names went on to this effect, lawyer for the accused, David Earl Strickland, witnesses Mabel John- son, Faye Lee, and Helen Lee, who work in the bank. I know you will be interested in knowing that the Iudge, Billy Dan Allen, was lenient with the accused. Another article which caught my eye told me that Robert Beasley is now a test pilot for Glenn Up- church's aircraft plant. Leaving the front page I saw that Carolyn Massengill was receiving recognition as the outstanding nurse of the year. How proud I was to know her. Reading the advertisements I learned that Raeford Moore is operating a used-car lot, Harold Mayo is running for state senator, Fondzo Moore is operating a funeral parlor, and Genevieve Lassiter, with the aid of Ella Allen, has recently opened her beauty salon. As all newspapers do, this one, too, had a sports section. This page informed me that Joe Lassiter is a successful basketball coach and Albert Lee is a big hit in the national league. After I had finished with the newspaper, Jo told me of a recent trip to New York during which time she saw several of our old friends. Among those she saw were, Patricia Allen, a medical missionary to China and Joe Baker and Raymond Johnson who are driving for a thriving taxi company. On a trip out to the airport she found Charlotte Barbour behind the information desk. She also found Lloyd Allen in the weather office of the airport, and he told her of his recent trip back to Four Oaks. He assured me that there were still some of the girls back home "keeping the home fires burning". Sylvia Lassiter fulfilled a longing and is ably coaching a top-notch girls' basketball team and teaching physical education. To mention a few of the "old married girls", there are Rebecca Critcher, Kay Barbour, Veatrice Lee, Shirley Thompson cmd Betty Jane Jackson. It seems also that Ann Keene and Annie Mozingo are being kept busy managing their day nurseries. Jean Parker and Thel Langdon, now happily married, are being kept busy, too-caring for all those chickens. Lloyd really knew the town news. Realizing, after all that reminiscing, that we were hungry, we decided to go down town to a restaur- ant about which we had heard a great deal. As we stepped inside the door, we were met by the con- genial hostess, Ruth Langdon and several waiters, who were none other than Lawrence Barefoot, Billy Blackman, Cecil Cobb, and Linwood Creech. We found a table and had begun to ponder over a menu when I heard a vaguely familiar "noise". It was Janice Wilson, Mary Keene and La Verne Ingram. It seems that Mary and Janice were in town visiting La Verne while their husbands were on the west coast on business. We had to repeat the news about all our classmates. In doing so, I happened to think of three boys who hadn't been mentioned. Upon asking about Bobby Stanley, Larry Parker, and Eddie Ray Johnson, I learned the following: Larry is teaching at the university and Bobby and Eddie have built up a nice medical practice in Four Oaks. It was getting dreadfully late by then, so we ended the review of the Class of I955, and we went our separate ways after saying-"Let's not wait this long to get together again."
