ENDURANCE AKES CHAMPIO S Mary Carreras, Carol Flannigan, Charlotte Long, and Barb VanWormer are caught with smiles at Trojan Pep Assembly. Steve Aultman shows Cross Country stamina as a sophomore. Allen Longee running in the Fountain Invitational. Cross Country being one of the most demanding of high school sports takes dedicated athletes. Coach Ralph Crume was looking forward to what could be one of the most promising seasons in many years, because he had these athletes. One thing stood in the way, injuries. Key runners were injured early in the season, hampering Fountain's team efforts. For the most of the season the team struggled to reach their goal. The high point of the season was the Fountain Invitational. The boys team took home a second place trophy and the girls a first place. Finally at State the team was somewhat healthy. loe King set a school record of 16:54.Z which placed him 18th. A girls record of 21:11.7 was set by Charlotte Long and teammate Carol Flannigan who was but one second behind at 21:12.6. Next year Fountain is looking for underclass strength to pull through in Steve Aultman, Tom Gonzaled, Ken Barela, Allen Longee, Rick Huff, and David Falls. The girls will return with strength in Charlotte Long, Carol Flannigan, Nanni Bhinke, Tina Forsett and Barb VanWormer. 49
