The 9-3 record marked Coach Smith's career best. The Trojans second place finish earned them a berth in the sixteen team Colorado Class AA State Football Tournament. To get the berth in the playoffs, the Trojans had to win their game against Rye, after just being defeated by Iohn Mall in a very poor sportsmanship game by the fans and a very strange power outage. But the Trojans came back showing they could not be kept down. Bouncing back and beating Rye 40-0, the defense was devastating letting Rye have only 49 yards total offense and 108 yards lost by opponents. :QQ I, TROIANS WI FIRST PLAYUF F GAME .--1... ,, tin --.AT -.: . Their main goal was to WIN and to improve their skills. The Trojans did exactly that. Six members of the gymnastics team qualified for state. State was held at Buena Vista on Nov. 3, 1979. At the closing of the gymnastics meet, they ranked 8th out of 25 teams. This was a good achievement considering the other teams had ten to twelve members competing. Coach Ralph Crume was looking forward to what could be one of the most promising seasons in many years, because he had these athletes. One thing stood in the way, injuries. Key runners were injured early in the season, hampering Fountain's team efforts. For the most of the season the team struggled to reach their goal. The high point of the season was the Fountain Invitational. The boys team took home a second place trophy and the girls a first place. Finally at State the team was somewhat healthy. loe King set a school record of 16:54.Z which placed him 18th. A girls record of 21:11.7 was set by Charlotte Long and teammate Carol Flannigan who was but one second behind at 21:12.6. MRS. Orton, sponsor of Student Council League Student Council members visiting Fountain!Ft. Carson High School. Student Council has had one of its busiest years this year. Homecoming week got off to a great start with a Homecoming week and dance. Some members of Student Council represented our school at many Santa Fe Student Council meetings as far away as Rye and Canon City. Others traveled to a Student Council conference sponsored by Districts 4 and 8. Between all of this, members of Student Council have livened up the school with innovative calendars, art boards. and posters: sponsored a Halloween costume contest: and acted as guides for the guest speakers on Career's Day. On Ianuary 23, the Student Council sponsored a League Student Council meeting. Four of the five schools in the Santa Fe League attended. This was a major project for the Student Council since this was our first year in the League, and we wanted to make a good first impression. Upcoming events include League Student Council meetings at Las Animas, and Rocky Ford, the annual carnival, and a few more dances. Student Council acts as a sounding board for the administration and the student body. The Council evaluates existing clubs to insure that they are meeting their responsibility to the Student Body. Any proposed new clubs must also be approved through the Student Council. Basically, Student Council is the governing body for the students, and the students voice to the administration. 87 THE TALK OCKSH OF FOUNTAIN-FORT Left to right: Earl Patterson, Brenda Ford, Tim Tallent, Valerie Howard, Tracie Kelsen, Lisa Dailey, Tedd Puchett, Renee Hansen, Denise Bryant, and Nancy Hart, Sponsor, Ken Kennard. District Librarian, Margaret Doudna, is retiring this year after working in the Fountain-Fort Carson School District for 22 years. Though Mrs. Doudna never intended to become a career woman , she has gontinuously served and dedicated her working years to this school istrict. When her husband was transfered to Fort Carson in 1958, Mrs. Doudna began working on the post as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher until 1963. She then took the position as grade school librarian at Fort Carson. Mrs. Doudna has been a librarian for 17 years. In 1975, she was offered the position of District Librarian, which she accepted. The Fountain-Fort Carson High School librarian is Mrs. Doudna, though many students are not aware of this because of the many duties she performs, and because only half of her time is spent in the high school, while she uses the rest of her time to work with all the other school libraries in the district. 120 Many improvements in the school libraries have taken place over the past 22 years, according to Mrs. Doudna. One new program which the library provides for teachers to use in the classroom with students is the video tape recorder, where educational programs are recorded from television. In Mrs. Doudna's opinion, this serves as a valuable learning experience for students. Though she has enjoyed her job, her career, and most of all working with the people, Mrs. Doudna plans on also enjoying her retirement. She plans to spend some time relaxing, sitting with my feet up , but she also plans to remain very active. A new career she is interested in is transcribing Braille for the blind. Also, she is an avid gardner and plans on traveling with her husband of 36 years who is retired military. High School Principal, lohn Shultz, would like Margaret Doudna to know that It has indeed been a real pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Doudna for the past five years. Her leadership and direction as District Librarian will surely be missed. I want to wish her the very best in her years of retirement.
