Ilic oxtr Iass THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1943 I m6ent6 ike and ack PUBLISHED BY FOSTORIA HIGH SCHOOL Fostoria, Ohio (Jil t ourglass INTRODUCTION As departing Seniors we come to realize what a part our Alma Mater has played in our lives thus far. Supposing we turn the hour glass upside down arid take a quick glance at our previous years in school. Our first day inside the protecting walls at Fostoria High were frightening ones but later, as we came to know the benefit to be derived, we learned to take the advice of the faculty and these lessons became profitable. The sand trickled slowly through the glass at first but increased in speed until now, as our graduation from Fostoria High school is near, we realize more fully what our school life has meant to us. As we leave, we wish to thank our faculty members under whose guidance and direction we have been during our school years, and for their kind help in class and club organizations. — Marj Wilhelm he nurglass DEDICATION to mm ESTEs DONALD KEISER DONALD MADDEN CHARLES MOTTRAM and all Fostoria High students who are willingly giving their lives in service to our country, we proudly dedicate the 1943 RED MD BLACK ®t|e mtrglass ADMINISTRATION The Superintendent and Principal of Fostoria High School must face many problems put before them both by the school at large and by the people of Fostoria. To master these situations and to elevate the standards of Fostoria High school, these men must be well trained in various fields. Throughout the year the Superintendent and the Principal have devoted their all to making our Alma Mater a better institution of study and learning. As in all things, harmony must be had before things can function properly. The adminis- tration perfected this harmony to such a degree that perfect cooperation between Fac- ulty and Students reigned this year. he aurqlass BOARD OF EDUCATION 1 f III i - v ■i «r ' P i ■;aacL-v -n. i vllfcl. ■fcfc, . The ideals formed during this period are those which determine our future stan- dards of life and its meaning. The chief responsibility of the high school teacher is to influence the foundation of these ideals along the right lines. A funda- mental ideal formed wrong is a life lost. To Superintendent H. L. Ford, Principal W. M. Hawk, and the faculty, we express our appreciation for their untiring efforts in upholding the scholastic standards of Fostoria High School. 13 ' { t aurglass ACUITY Miss Ina Sponsler Ohio Wesleyan, B.A. Findlay College New York University Business English Stenography Business Principles Annual Circulation Advisor Mr. Jess Powers Indiana State Teachers College, B.S. Now they must step from the position of student to the even greater responsibility of citizenship. The Seniors have proved themselves worthy of the esteem with which they have been re- garded by those about them. They have ex- hibited laudable skill and efficiency in the execution of their various capacities as leaders of the student body, heads of publications and athletic organizations, and officers of clubs. It is the hope of those whom they leave behind that, having cooperated so whole- heartedly with our school spirit, and having contributed so much toward upholding the fine ideals of Fostoria High School, they will continue to keep alive its memories and contacts in later years. 22 he mtrglasa William Allen All-school play 3; An- nual staff 4; Band (concert) 1,2,3,4; Band (marching) 1,2,3,4; Hi- Y 3,4; Little symphony 2,3; Orchestra 1,2,3,4; Pit orchestra 2,3,4; Jr. Hi-Y 1; Science club 1. Three years of hard work has been the contributing factor in this accomplish- ment. They have become an important part of our school life. In athletics, the Junior boys filled the positions of mainstays in many sports and proved good material for the development of future F.H.S. teams. Particularly noticeable during the past year was the growing class spirit and distinctive personality of the Juniors. This should help them very much in solving the problems which they will meet next year and in their future lives. The Sophomores have taken one more step toward their destination. They have put behind them their first year of Senior High School. They have started to develop their ability by giving a class party, a play, and taking part in class projects. Next year they will be given a chance to develop leadership by being responsible for Junior Class dances, plays, and the Junior-Senior Prom. Let ' s hope they will be as successful in the Junior Class as they were in the Sophomore Class. 39 ' [ e ourglass SOPHOMORES i i.4t iT . rr a Velma Allison Jean Anderson Doris Baker Ruth Balsat Harold Barchus Bill Barringer Robert Baxter Dick Beers Jim Beeson Shirley Bennett Phyllis Benson Jim Bentz Barbara Bishop Roger Boomershine Forest Bostic Louise Boucher Kathryn Bradner June Brandeberry Helen Brombley Virginia Brubaker Louise Bulkowski Virginia Byrd Bill Calhoon Gene Carrel Bill Charles Ann Clark Pauline Clark Raymond Clark Clifford Cockle Robert Cooper Donald Coppler Jewel Copsey Stanley Cramer Bob Currier Don Danner 40 iu Ijnurqlass SOPHOMORES Gerald Davis Charles Began Dorothy Devore Eileen Deweese Jane Dicken Alva Dolch Pat Dj ' e Dick Fast Bob Feisel Jean Fey Eugene Fisher Kenneth Fogt Bob Foltz Ruth Fox Barbara Fruth Betty Fry Thelma Fuller Jack Gangway Bernita Goodale Don Greenwood Robert Gregg Richard Grove Harold Gruber Myron Hall Bert Hatfield Betty Hay Eula Heckathorn Mary Heinze Gladys Heiserman Paul Holtsberry Delbert Horner Dorothy Hufford Helen Hutchinson Doris Imber Edwin Jackson 41 ®i|e ourglass SOPHOMORES John Jacoby LeRoy Johnson Willie Johnson Edna Keyes Charles Kimble Jim LeComte Clyde Lentz Virginia Lewis Jack McClellan Bob McCuIlough Betty McCurdy Jean McDonel Dan McGinnis Betty McPeek Jim Madden Jim Mall Ethel Manecke Bill Miller Gloria Morgan Joan Mumma Howard Myers Ivan Myers Wayne Myers Librada Navarro Jim Needles Bob Nierescher Imogene Niswander Don Nolan Jim Nusser JoAnne O ' Brien Robert Ogg Janet Page Allegra Pasqualetti Jack Perkins Marjorie Peters 42 ®l|e our Iass SOPHOMORES B. Fostoria High students have marched right into school activities geared to fit them for service during war time. Many high school youths are doing Red Cross work, both in our school service clubs and individually. In addition, our high school courses have been extended to include various types of technical training. In these ways, the youth of today have assumed their places in the war program. Before this spring is over, many boys of the 1943 graduat- ing class will take their places beside the scores of Fostoria High graduates who are already serving in our armed forces. These young men are a symbol of the bravery and courage imbedded in the hearts of true Americans. 53 (Ehe l our lass F. H. S. Direclor Mr. James Middleton What can be done in the way of music, under a real organizer, at Fostoria High, has been well illustrated during the past year. Mr. James Middleton came here this year from New Bremen, Ohio, and has staged a successful operetta and a number of musicals pertaining to holiday seasons. Mr. Middleton cannot be thanked too much for the work he has done for the music department — and the school as a whole. 69 ' [ e nurglass ATHLETICS The Athletic Department of Fostoria High School this year has faced one of the most difficult prob- lems possible. They were not alone, however, for nearly every high school in the country has been faced with the same problem. Should the high schools go ahead with inter-scholastic competition? There were many arguments concerning the aban- doning of inter-scholastic sports for the duration because of the gasoline situation and the need for manpower. Fostoria High School decided, as did 75% of the high schools all over the country, to go ahead. With no orders from authoritative sources, sports went ahead as usual at the school of the Redmen. Under Coach Trubey our football team had a most successful season. The Redmen wound up the season tied for the lead in the Buckeye League, as well as having credit for victories over outstanding independent teams of the state. The basketball team, minus many regulars from last year ' s squad, because of graduation, did not fare as well as their brothers from the gridiron. They did develop many prospects for next year under Mr. Herbert, who has spent his first year as coach at F.H.S. 71 HljB imrglasB FOOTBALL -liiilS iflri? ' HBil ' iiiy ' ' iii8S First Row: S. Since Mr. Trubey has been here, he has won twice as many games as he has lost. This, however, is not his only accomplishment. At the end of our schedule, the Red- men found themselves tied for first place in the Buckeye league. Mr. Trubey ' s players have learned the meaning of good sportsmanship, and in winning or losing they have practiced it. ASSISTANT COACH Mr. Dale Herbert came to F.H.S. last year as a trainer and this year took over the job of assistant football coach. Under the guidance of Miss Stur- geon, girls ' physical education director, they were taught many things about sportsman- ship. 84 ®l|£ oxirglass 85 ®l|e our lass POBLICATIONS By working together and performing their tasks to the utmost of their ability, the Annual Staff has again recorded the joys and senti- ments of Fostoria High. Bringing together the events of 1943 and recording them for all time is a difficult task, but with cooperation and willingness to work, the staff of the 1943 An- nual is proud to present to the school and stu- dent body the 1943 RED AND BLACK. The sister publication of the annual. The Illustrated News Journal, has again success- fully served the student body as the news agency of Fostoria High. Acquainting the stu- dents with what is happening at and around our school was the chief problem of the Journ- al. Although fewer publications were made this year, the Journal still maintained the standards set by those who originated our school paper. 86 IjB ourglass 1943 RED AND BLACK ANNUAL STAFF First Row. Their aim was to put out an Annual which would be the best possible, due to the war situation. The Annual Staff was chosen in the middle of the first semester in order to give them plenty of time to produce a carefully planned year-book. The committee members and the Annual heads were willing to work under the splendid supervision of Mr. C. N. Nacci and Mr. Jess Powers. As to how well the staff has succeeded, we will allow the Red and Black to speak for itself. 87 (IIl]e Ijtmrqiass LITERARY STAFF First Row: Betty Church, K. I want my Journal, is the cry that echoes through- out the corridors of Fostoria High school on the last Wednesday of every month. Answering this call is a group of student salesmen who get little praise for their fine job of distributing the Journals. Hats off to the Journal salesmen! 91 (ibc Hioiirqlass ) 92 ' he J mir iass EXTRA CURRICHLE ACTIVITIES Fostoria High school has always been noted for its opportunities in extra- c urricular activities. Our many clubs, athletics, and musical organizations offer an equal chance to all pupils. The reason for any activities outside the regular school work is to get the students ac- quainted with working together. The story is told of a lisherman who tried to paddle his boat with only one paddle. He worked hard but he got no- where. The same is true of the student who tries to go through school without entering some extra-curricular activity. He may work hard, but he gets nowhere because he has not learned the advantage of working together. 93 ' 2Ihe ourqlnss HI-Y ■.:jft « ' — ■' The national organization of the Hi-Y was first introduced at Fostoria High school twenty-two years ago. Senior and Junior boj ' ' s are selected to join by the old members. Strict initiation rules test such selectees as to their sportsmanship. Meetings are held every Wednesday noon in the music room. Programs consist of guest speakers, debates, and local people with talents. Clean living, Clean speech, Clean athletics, and Clean scholarship, is the well stuck-to motto of the Hi-Y boys. This group, throughout the year, has undertaken many projects for the betterment of the school. A continuous history of the high school has been put up to date and many new entries have been added to the National Honor scrapbook. Each issue of the Illustrated News Journal has contained an edi- torial written by the society. This year the society also undertook the editing of a Student Handbook to better acquaint students with their school. Under the guidance of Miss Crawford and Mr. Hawk, the Ida L. (Liu l our lass FEATURES In effort to picture Fostoria High as it really is, we have devoted this section to snapshots of the school at large. Most of the pictures in this section have been contributed by the students and teach- ers. We have tried to bring together the daily activities and classes in and around the school in hope that they will some day remind us of the time we spent to- gether in F.H.S. 109 110 In ADVERTISEMENTS We thank these organizations who have patronized our annual this year, making possible the contents of this book. Their eye for business will be rewarded in the future by the students of Fostoria High who patronize our patrons. 113 oill? Especially to Pat Marchion, who courteously gave his time to the taking of class pictures; to the various advisors, who worked with the staff so that fewer mistakes would be made; and to the administration for their cooperation. You have done a fine job and one you may well be proud of. To the future heads of the RED AND BLACK we say, Good luck and better year- books!
