CREDO... CLASS OF ' 42 Our elders, who ' ve forgotten their youth, tell us That we are a wild generation Living for trivial foolish pleasures; That our heritage of liberty and equality Is trampled beneath unheeding feet. But we, the class of ' 42, say, Not so! We ' re fully aware of our delegated trust As future members of a warring world Rent apart by greed and hate. With forthrightness our watchword, We shall endeavor not to lose the creeds That have been burned on the spirits Of American youth by the sufferings Of our European compatriots. Give us a chance to prove our opinion Of dictators whose goal is tyranny For all free people everywhere. The spark of patriotism burns as bright As in ' 17, but with realism ' s glow. In the years rushing to meet us Youth will show its mettle. The eagle will scream unfettered forever. Pat Ruhl. 30
