Each student enters a door of his own choice. For four years he works in his chos- en department, cooperating with his in- structors and fellow students. Not only is he taught the fundamentals of his course but also the art of living in, and maintaining a democratic union. He is shown how to express his thoughts, how to know right from wrong, and to make the most of his abilities. When a student leaves this place of learning, he should be ready and equipped to accept his share of the res- ponsibility in preserving a free and in- dependent nation. RED and BLACK ANNUAL 1942 WE DEDICA TE Before this spring is over, several of the faculty members v i be leaving their positions to become a part of the armed forces that defend our country. Many of the boys of the Senior Class, having abandoned their plans for college, will join the army, navy, marines, or air corps. To these courageous young men who are so willing to offer their lives to their country, we especially hope that this annual will be a pictorial review of our school year, and we, the class of 1942, dedicate this yearbook to them. Senior Class ol 1942 Fosloria High School Fosloria, Oiiio ADMINISTRATION The Superintendent of schools and the Principal of Fostoria High, responsible to the people of Fostoria through the Board of Education, manage adminis- trative situations and student problems. Through them the students are given opportunities and the standards of our schools are elevated to the highest degree. Many times throughout the school year, a student finds that he needs per- sonal guidance and vocational advice. The deans, with patient understanding are always ready to help him solve this problem in every possible way. The harmony of the school is depend- ent upon the united spirit and efficiency of the entire administration. Mr. Ivan Harrison, clerk: Mr. Floyd J. Kinnaman, Mr. H. L. Zemer, Mr. D. D. Schlatter, president; Mr. C. D. Houser, vice president: Mr. R. J. Carter, Supt. H. L. Ford. THE BOARD OF EDOCATION The board members here, as elected representatives of the community, have opened the doors for the students to enter into the halls of learning. With the splendid cooperation and support of these men, our school has attained a high standard. Mr. Schlatter has been serving since 1932. Retired from an active vocation, he now enjoys a busy home life. Mr. Houser, vice president of the Commercial Bank, was elected in 1941. Mr. Harrison, retired agri- culturist, also came in that year. Not only have the students lived up to the high ideals and heritage of their school but they have also displayed, firmly and confidently, their loyalty and faith in the United States of America. When the door of Democracy opened, ushering in the opportunity to serve gladly and without stint, it may be said our students responded in a manner that makes them, and boys and girls like them all over the country, the pillars of hope and freedom throughout the world. ALMA MATER, IN GRATITUDE Dear Alma Mater, it befalls To us who have served Fostoria High Loyally within your walls The task of bidding these good-bye: Friendly faculty, luncheon meetings. Open doors, watchful clocks with weary faces. Stairs worn by generations of scuffed shoes, Traditions of years, candle-light services, Oral quizzes, hours of detention. Restless home rooms, daily announcements, Initials by pairs on books and desks, Absent pencils, leaky pens. Hi-Y emblems, G. R. teas, Installation services, Senior assem.bly, Girls and boys, lingering, laughing . . . Happy hours in hallowed halls. Though fate may scatter us apart. To farthest bounds of land and sea. We hold these close, dear Mother Heart, In everlasting memory. CLASS OF ' 42 Our elders, who ' ve forgotten their youth, tell us That we are a wild generation Living for trivial foolish pleasures; That our heritage of liberty and equality Is trampled beneath unheeding feet. But we, the class of ' 42, say, Not so! We ' re fully aware of our delegated trust As future members of a warring world Rent apart by greed and hate. With forthrightness our watchword, We shall endeavor not to lose the creeds That have been burned on the spirits Of American youth by the sufferings Of our European compatriots. Give us a chance to prove our opinion Of dictators whose goal is tyranny For all free people everywhere. The spark of patriotism burns as bright As in ' 17, but with realism ' s glow. In the years rushing to meet us Youth will show its mettle. The eagle will scream unfettered forever. Pat Ruhl. 30 β’43 JUNIORS The β eβiers of ttie doss of 1943 are cr rr.nr.g themselves for a post-war world. New opportunities have taken the place of the old. This class will odd in forging a new set of ideals for Ameri- cans. They ore the pioneers of tomorrow. Opportunities for the class of ' 43 will be abundant During their remaining year in high school, they must prepare themselves so that they can take ad- vantage of these opportunities to the best of iheir abilities. Day in and day out, under the direction of Mr. Ivan Harrison, head of the department, they keep Fostoria High at its best. These men, each in their turn, are always on duty when the building is open after school hours as well as during the day. To them, we owe our sincere appreciation for the appearance of the building. BEHIND THE SCENES Bert Hanley, janitor; Charles Harris, engineer; Harold Switzer and Troy Rangeler, janitors. 46 ATHLETICS The athletic department of Fostoria High school is noted for several outstanding traits: success in athletic achievement, good sportsmanship, and the ability to take defeat in stride and congratulate the winner. It has not only strived for athletic success but also for the better- ment of the individuals in such v ays as the physical development of the mind, the promotion of co-operation, and the ability to follow orders. Indirectly, the whole school partici- pates in the athletic system, and, as spectators, have made our school noted for its courtesy. The students not only show pep and spirit when we win, but also when we lose, and are the first to congratulate the winners. Our school can well be proud of these qualities. So, hit ' em high, hit ' em low, come on, Fostoria, let ' s go! COACH Dale Herbert Ike Trubey Stanley Lewis During the six years Head Coach Ike Trubey and the five years Assistant Coach Stan Lewis have coached here, there have been, as far as points are concerned, good and not so good teams; but, when the morale, the spirit, and the eagerness of these past teams are considered, they have always been the best. This is the result of the teachings of these two men. Ike was one of the players on the undefeated team of 1931 at Wittenberg University before coming here to coach. Stan re- ceived his degree from Miami University and, before coming to Fostoria, had had several years ' coaching experience. 51 FOOTBALL LETTERMEN J ck Beeson RESERVE FOOTRALL SQUAD First Row: W. JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL 59 MUSIC When Robert Browning wrote There is not truer truth obtainable by man than comes of music, he struck the real key- note. Through music, man has been able to express himself more clearly than any other way. Music has helped men go through the ordeals that call for real courage. Music might well be called the citadel of life ... a place one might retreat to in times of sadness or happiness. All those who participate in making these departments of importance to our school will, in later life, realize the good that has come from being a part of them. ! Β T --A β β’β’T T Β₯. Vibrates in the memory β All those who have hod the privilege of hearing some part of our vocal music department know the keen pleasure experienced. The participants are so inspired themselves that the feeling is carried over into the audience allowing them to feel that inspiration, too. It is through such beautiful music that one learns to know and appreciate those taking part. Seriousness and co-opera- tion are the two outstanding traits enter- ing into the making of music and their director has surely made the students realize this. We can truly say we are proud to be the producers of such music . . . that it will remain long in our memories after the last note has gone from the air. 67 A CAPPELLA CHOIR Advisor Mr. C. F.
