H S that year was this tact especially manifested as nrne of our men nade hrst team that season With this valuable addition to the strength ot the team athletics took a decxded turn for the better When we returned to school for our second season with minds refreshed alter a convalescence ol the usual length we were proud to occupy the quarters ol our erstwhile tormentors and take up the weapons they used on us to annoy our own successors This we did with no compunctron lor on hndrng that as yet we had evidently not ascended high enough to gain any particular recognition we placed all our energies rn disconcerting the unsophrstrcated Freshmen Recognition d d come to us after the fasnion of those wno wart patiently and work with a will Our work x'1 athletics was not to be rgnared Both in football and basketoall did the So::ho'nore players wm honorable records I lootball F M H S recelved the Southeastern lowa Football Chamoxoashzp with not a game ol the season lo Everyoa w II agree that the Soph contrx bution to the team is wnat dfd rt' Our gnrl s basketball team d cl exceptionally bitterly lorght contests The much talked ol O'1e Man Track Team ol F M I4 S wh ch received so much mention as well as rredals hailed from the Class o 9 The Clee Cfab u der that eflacient Director TV1r Weeks was quite suc cessful as was the Recital given at the Grand Ope a House m which many ol our members took part Many were the good times we enjoyed during this year Coupled with our own activities were the numerous events staged by the unxors and Seniors Both tended to make the year one not easily forgotten by the Class of I9 rf any could possibly not be rememl-ered' Now we entered the portals ol learning for the thxrd year and we subtly lelt the animosity that customarily prevails between Juniors and Seniors namely ourselves and those august personages who occupied the most coveted and drg mfied positron rn the Assembly Our Hrst thought was for funds with which to provide the social event of the season and finding our resources not any too overabundant and in order that the affair mrght remain a pleasant memory for our guests of honor the Class of I8 we devxsed a plan of ways and means One ol many like occurrences was the Junior Box Supper given at the Marquette Hall We were certainly 27 0 . fl XSS IIIQTUPX Mildred Largent With bright and happy faces beaming with pleased and expectant antxcr patron, the class of I9 substantial in number and comely in face and figure entered that eminent educational domain known as F M H S We were some what dismayed at the fleeting and disdainful glances bestowed upon us by the upper classmen who straightway forgot our existence that is most of them did except some enamored by the charms of some of our flowers of feminmty land otherwise, who found it not easy to do so and by the almost stern gaze filled with malicious intent which our natural Cas we soon uncomfortably ascertamedj enemies the Sophomores fastened upon us Everyone then proceeded to leave us helpless Cso they thoughtj to wend our unhappy way along unfamiliar paths It did not take us long to overcome this handicap as a result of their neglect consequently we were not the infants public opinion seemed wont to deem us but very self reliant young beings This commendable acquirement is still one of our prominent points' Nevertheless we lived through this year of grilling experiences with minds weighted OJ with knowledge and hearts care free and pleasure filled for we had not lacked rn that element called social instinct Speak to divert our instructors as well as ourselves' New and novel sensations during this period were numerous in fact too numerous to mention all But I m sure that an event that will remain intact in all our minds is our first class festivzty given on Hallowe en 1915 Another incident that will not be forgotten either by ourselves or our stern visaged Sophomore friends is the brutal and pitiless man ner in which we were so thoroughly frightened on Commencement Night of that same year We did swallow the desire to shriek however with due apologies to our Superrors in rank Needless to mention more' Likewise some of our bravest summoned enough courage by this time to venture across the front of the Assembly Hall without any visible quakes of fear at the scathing remarks in hissing undertones thrust at us by those aforementioned Superrors The appellations Freshie and Green no longer caused us to lose a whit of our usual calm composure or to blush furiously at the slight as was our natural desire Ah' Many were the laughs we received when it became known that we had chosen Silver and Green for our class colors' Another element not lacking in our make up was the unusual ability of some of our men in athletics In football the principal form of athletics in F M 76 N1 1 Y ' J Al K n n X I . - , . . , . surprised at the good fellowship shown by our classmen especially our UPPER classmen' We drd not lose confidence but continued on our way with light hearts, not realizing that unwarranted vacations cannot be taken wrthoct due compensation Copying dry history is not what is generally conceded to be just exactly what rs commonly called fun ' Finally, not being able to endure our calmness any longer the Seniors evidently glad of an opportunity of taking some of the age from their careworn faces, appeared one morning attrred quite successfully for the purpo e CAnyone desiring further information with regard to the matter of reducing ones age will be furnished same with full directions upon inquiry D Not to be left lzehrnd we immediately pulled down their colors much to their quiet consternatron and strarghtway proceeded to put up our own This move called forth such acts from Authorities that we instantly made peace among ourselves and backed by the Classes of 20 and 21 we moved agafnst our opposing ofncrals with a ven geance Certainly F IV' H S never before witnessed s rch thrrllrng and hair rarsmg scenes' Everything ended beautrfully nevertheless and relations were again placed on a frrendly footing Henceforth affairs went smoothly at least there were no more open demon tratxons So we graciously ushered our dear enemfes out of High School and into tne cruel world with and I thrnk We wrll be pardoned rn feelxng thuslv reasonable relief' All too soon drd the time cnme when we were to take our places for the last time rn good old F M H S Still confident and assured of success we resumed our studies with the full realization that we were now weighted with responsrbrlrty Ahead of us, looming up rn the far distance we saw our futures ready to be more fully developed and made use of We were saddened to think of leaving the school we knew so well but higher ambrtrons and hopes led us to believe that better and as pleasant experiences awaited us further on Peace and quiet reigned over us until the Seniors took a rather sudden notion to start the ball rolling, and on the Friday before Washington s birthday as a suitable remem brance presented ourselves bedecked with our colors silver and green The next Monday the Juniors were indeed surprised to vrew what was supposedly the remains of a representative of themselves suspended from a telephone cable and, farther on their goat in the same positron Some little excitement was occasioned when a few of the members of that small but mighty class of 20 hired a vehicle to rescue their representative from such disgrace More ex cxtement followed when much to our amused surprise we found that unable to await our legal departure the Iunrors had prematurely made away wrth us 28 V ' Y n 6 V .
