THE HIGH SCHOOL TIMES radt was it the throttle and the years trlp wasa decxded success In 1911 H L Thornton became Master Mecha mc and declded to make lt an engxne of trlple expan snon and to Econonuze at the same t1me Mlss Stewart who had been 1 rnachlmst xn the F M H S Shops some years before became lnterested 1n the structure and was appomted Machnnlst 1n Enghsh Department Mlss Selma Stempel had now taken the place left vacant by Mxss Cummxnffs Mlss Carol Scott htd taken Mr Dlcks place and MISS Lllv Robmson had Mlss Knoepller s work mn the uuddle of thxs year One pxece was left out of the englne and nt had become much easter to govern The wnter englneered the run durmg thxs year Thexe was st1ll some IrI'lLI1OI1 wh1ch at one t1me nearly caused a head end colhston wxth engme number 1912 In 1913 the shops were cons1derably enlarged and the force mcreased It was declded by Master Mechanlc Thornton aftera consu1tat1on w1thSupt Schall and the Trustees of the Company that the eng1ne should have a thorough overhaulmg after wh1ch1t was to be released for good The englne up to thls t1me had been of compound constructlon It was declded to change It IHIO a sxmple quadruple expanszon engme Mr Van Voltmbergh pomted out the defects IH the boller so xt was converted 1nto the superheater type Mr Repass made the blue punts and the fmal work was begun As the lubucmtmg of the mechanlsm h td been pool Mlss Stewarts olly Enghsh was brought mto pl ty Mxss Garrett md M1ss Sk1nner the successor of MISS Scott now figured the necessary angles It was also found th tt the fuel wh1ch they had been usmg was ne1ther samtary nor econonucal Mxss H111 was secured and tn the Domestxc Sclence Labaratory worked out thls dllficulty w1th apparent ease Wtth such competent machmxsts after such prev1ous expermments xt IS no wonder th tt the most perfect englne ever turned out of F M H S was run from the old shop on May 29th On the green colored tender were the large golden Hgures 1913 It was now re tdy for servlce havlng made lts trlal trlp dr1ven by Byron He1t7n1an Now comes an seemmg contradlctlon 1n the wr1ters tale Thus splend1d new engxne was to be dls mantled unnledmately If 'tn eng1ne IS buxlt for servxce why should thts one be made useless?
