Tl-IE HIGH HIGH SCHOOL TIMES tl1e Ch1ldrens Hosp1tal Soc1ety supported a med1cal cl1n1c and It wls found that n1nety mne per cent of tl1ese errmg clnldren were 1n need of med1cal atten t1on All th1s work started by women 1S now taken over by the publxc To Ellen H R1chards IS due much of the suc cess of the movement for sc1ent1f1c tra1n1ng1n the schools of EIYIS for home l1fe The efforts of Maude Younger called the Helen Gould of San Franc1sco 1n behalf of workmg g1rls wa1tresses ID part1cular are worthy of the hlgh6Sf P13158 Born and ralsed 1n the Cl'1V1I'OIlIllCIltS of of her less fortunate sxsters To ga1n a practlcal knowledge of cond1t1ons she left her comfortable l1on1e and worked 1s a wa1tress 1n many hotels from New York to San FTZDCISCO a1d1ng and encouraglng those w1th whom she worked Then resummg her own pos1t1on of l1fe she put forth all tl1e strength of her powerful personahty and wealth 1n an endeavor to ga1n leg1slat1on 1n favor of the workmg gxrls of Cal1forn1a Though opposed by many of the pol1t1ca1 bosses of the state she at last succeeded m gammg I11l1Ch of what she des1red Supreme among the chem1sts of today stands Madame Curle who d1scovered the wonderful sub stance rad1un1 not by acc1dent but by expenment and pat1ent reasonmg from cause to effect The aclnevements of the var1ous women s clubs and assoc1at1ons of the Un1ted States are remarkable At the meetmg of the Federat1on of Women s Clubs 1n San Franc1sco last summer twenty four resolut1ons were passed 1nd1cat1ng the d1rect1on 1n whlch then' work IS to be turned 1n the next two years Most of these resolut1ons dealt w1tl1 two subjects wh1ch v1tally affect the welfare of the nat1on pubhc health and the stablhty of home l1fe fhese women mtend to courage medxcal atte 1'1on fox scl1ool Chlldrell and to provlde out door scl1ools for those wl1o 11eed them They also endorsed the Whxte Slave T1 affic Act of out more st11ctly than heretofore 'lhe moral and soc1aleffect of the stage be1ng very great they w1l1 attempt to 1nculcate h1gher 1deals for th1s nat1ona1 ln st1tut1on and w1l1 endeavor to bzmg about a conference wlth the leadlng newspapers suggestmg concerted effort to e1ther d1scont1nue the com1c supflements or altez the1r character by subst1tut1ng really humorous and art1st1c matter All these and many more thmgs for the general good are be1ng accomphshed by women who are tak mg a promment place 1n publnc l1fe Are men accom phshmg a great deal more?
