10 THIL HIGH SCHOOL TIMES why he was so far bCl1ll'1CllI'l the musncal lme when he volunteenzd the xnformatlon asklng what the latest was and sayang he we1y seldom V1Slt6Cl thls lower world of ours Krxss lnterrupted our conversatlon by askmg where I w1shed to go I told hlm I was not partxcular but would rather llke to see Fort Madx son from such a height Accordmgly we shxfted our dlrectlon a tr1fle I went over seated myself bes1de h1m and asked What has become of your re1ndeer7 Well my boy I had to keep up wlth the tlmes and Im rxght glad I dld because now I can come rxght from my home at the North Pole ln just one fifth the tlme and am comfortable too he replzed We swooped sxlently across the rnver and nearlng Iowas shore I saw nn the dlstance a group of skaters We gllded sulently overhead and by the axd of a fire on the bank I recognlzed a few of the boys and glrls from Hxgh School but by thus tlme we were ascendmg to escape the sky Scrapers We were dlrectly over the clty of Fort Mad1SOH stretchmg pent along the banks of the MISSISSIPPI Rlver wlth the prlson a huge mass of dlstlngunshable lxghts as 1ts head We were clrcllng sllently some elght hundred feet above the clty and Krlss was pralsmg the new Santa Fe depot when wlth acry of horror the asslstant turned towards us wlth h1s awe strmcken face and in falterlng accents told us the gasolnne was about out and the supply tank had sprung a leak allowxng the precious Hu1d to escape We were doomed The sh1p was smkzng Wxth a sudden lurch we started on our downward course falhng falhng Heavens' would lt never cease' As we neared the earth I plcked out a square of cement s1dewalk whlch seemed softer than 1ts nemghbors and determxned lf possxble to land upon It The blur of llghts was rushlng up to meet us Wlth a slcken lng thud and a loud crash we I sat up yawnlng and rubbmg my eyes an overturned cha1r explam ed the crash and feelmg of my head where a lump was fast appearmg I determmed that lt more than exp1a1ned the sxckenmg thud It had all been a dream I had dropped asleep and was awakened by fallmg from my chaxr and stnkmg my head upon The M111 on the Floss whuch I had laid upon the floor PHIL BERTSCHI 13 I 1 v .
