The climate is warm and humid and destructive typhoons occur frequently. Okinawans paid tribute to the emperors of China from the 14th century. ' Today Okinawa is a thriving is- land. Fishing and agriculture are the main industries but light indus- try, tourism, and the presence of a large number of U.S. military per- sonnel also boost the economy. Buckner Bay is the headquarters of Commander Amphibious Forces, Seventh Fleet. Only in 1895 did China formally acknowledge Japanese acquisition during World War II U.S. forces attacked Okinawa and after 82 days of bitter fighting took the is- land. Losses' were high on both sides. After the war the island was retained under U.S. administration until 1972 when it was returned to Japan. ALTHOUGH LACKING IN PRACTICE TIME, FORT FISH- ER'S SOFTBALL TEAM WAS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE. IN GAMES AGAINST USS THO- MASTON, AND USS TUSCA- LOOSA OUR RECORD WAS TWO WINS AND TWO LOSSES. .
